718 GTS 4.0 Announcement<\/h3>\n

The other day, the 718 GTS model equipped with a 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six engine, the “GTS 4.0”<\/strong>, was announced, and it quickly became a hot topic online. Until now, the currently available 718 GTS has been a four-cylinder model, and I thought only the 718 Spyder and GT4 had six-cylinder engines, but now the six-cylinder NA engine has made a comeback in the GTS lineup.<\/p>\n

Since various articles have already covered the specs of the GTS 4.0 in detail, I won\u2019t go too deep here, but here are some highlights:<\/p>\n

\u30fbMaximum output is 400ps (35PS more than the four-cylinder GTS)<\/span>
\n\u30fb0-100 km\/h in 4.5 seconds
\n\u30fbTop speed of 293 km\/h
\n\u30fbTransmission initially offered only as a 6-speed manual
\n\u30fbJapanese market currently only right-hand drive
\n\u30fbAs a GTS model, \u201cSport Chrono Package,\u201d \u201cPASM Sports Suspension,\u201d and \u201cPorsche Torque Vectoring (PTV)\u201d<\/strong> come standard
\n\u30fbExterior features signature black design elements unique to the GTS
\n\u30fbEquipped with a GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter)<\/a> (Japanese spec unknown)
\n\u30fbThe Japanese price for the Boxster GTS 4.0 is \u00a511,110,000<\/p>\n

That\u2019s about it.<\/p>\n

From the Perspective of a 981 Boxster Owner: \u201cGTS 4.0\u201d<\/h3>\n

On the morning the \u201cGTS 4.0\u201d was announced, my husband said,<\/p>\n

They just released the GTS 4.0, but I imagine it must feel complicated for those who already bought the 718 GTS. I know someone who bought the 718 Boxster GTS<\/strong>, but\u2026<\/p>\n

I replied, \u201cYeah, Porsche really should think a bit more about the timing of these releases\u2026\u201d and he said,<\/p>\n

No, Porsche often does this kind of thing. It\u2019s like a late reveal move, happens all the time, lol. Maybe the four-cylinder 718 sales were worse than expected\u2026 or maybe longtime Porsche fans just weren\u2019t that interested in the four-cylinder.<\/p>\n

By the way, my husband currently owns a 918 Boxster GTS, so I asked him how he feels about this new \u201cGTS 4.0\u201d announcement. He said,<\/p>\n

If I were buying a Boxster or Cayman brand new for the first time now, I think this GTS 4.0 would be really great. If I didn\u2019t already own a 981 Boxster GTS, I would definitely buy it.<\/strong>
\nThe main reason is, of course, the naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine<\/strong>. On top of that, the 718\u2019s robust chassis, and it\u2019s more street-focused than the GT4 or Spyder. It\u2019s perfect. Plus, it\u2019s a GTS. Production numbers probably won\u2019t be huge, so resale value should be good too. I think it\u2019s an excellent car.<\/p>\n

When I asked, \u201cSo, will you trade up?\u201d he said,<\/p>\n

No, I won\u2019t, lol.<\/strong> The biggest reason is that it\u2019s a right-hand drive manual. That\u2019s a dealbreaker. I have no reason to sell my left-hand drive 981 Boxster and pay extra to switch to a right-hand drive manual. (If it were a right-hand drive PDK, that\u2019d be totally fine.)<\/span>
\nAlso, I just can\u2019t give up the engine sound of the 981 Boxster GTS.<\/strong> That sound is amazing. Personally, I think it\u2019s the best Porsche engine sound of the last decade\u2014a true masterpiece. Whether cruising around town or pushing it on winding roads, it sounds fantastic.
\nAnd with 330PS perfectly manageable on Japanese winding roads, this car delivers happiness beyond pure performance.<\/strong> So I don\u2019t want to pay extra just to switch.<\/p>\n

Makes perfect sense.<\/p>\n

I also really love the engine sound of my current 981 Boxster GTS\u2014it moves me to tears\u2014so I was relieved and thought, \u201cI hope my husband keeps owning the 981 forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

That said, if any of our acquaintances end up buying the \u201cGTS 4.0,\u201d I\u2019d be thrilled to ride shotgun sometime, lol.<\/p>\n
