He went for a test drive, so I asked him to share his impressions. It used to be called the \u201c<strong>Axela<\/strong>\u201d in Japan, but with this model change, it adopted the globally used name \u201c<strong>Mazda3<\/strong>.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>When I heard this, I felt Mazda\u2019s strong determination and was very impressed by their effort to break free from the typical Japanese \u201cGalapagos car\u201d mindset.  <\/p>\n<p>Before the test drive, I did some homework through magazines, websites, and videos, and <strong>all the reviews were very positive<\/strong>. Although it was just released, so there might be some bias, even setting that aside, the praise was quite high, which piqued my interest. So I was eager to seriously consider it as a commuter car and went for the test drive.  <\/p>\n<p>This time, I actually test drove <strong>two Mazda3 models: the Skyactiv-X and the Skyactiv-G 2.0<\/strong>, and I\u2019ll share my honest thoughts without any sugarcoating.  <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Interior\"><\/span>Interior<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Before the drive, I took a close look at the display model, which was the Skyactiv-G 1.5, the entry-level version. But when I got into the driver\u2019s seat, I was surprised!  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3025-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"MAZDA3\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The quality feels very high.<\/strong> From the dashboard materials to the seat fabric, steering wheel, and center console, it doesn\u2019t feel like a car priced in the two-million-yen range. <strong>Honestly, it feels much better than the Golf 7 I used to drive.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3022-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MAZDA3 Interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3015-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MAZDA3 Interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>The interior doesn\u2019t feel spacious; it\u2019s somewhat tight but not unpleasant. It has a snugness that helps you focus on driving. I also sat in the passenger seat, which felt even tighter in width, but that cozy feeling was quite pleasant.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The seats felt a bit small for my body type, but they were comfortable.<\/strong> They have a simple design but offer solid support. If you\u2019re looking for the soft, sofa-like comfort often found in Japanese cars, this might not be for you. People who think \u201cthick, soft, cushy seats = no fatigue\u201d might not like it.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3017-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MAZDA3 Interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>The brochure talks about keeping your pelvis upright and so on, but I couldn\u2019t really focus on that. However, <strong>I think this shape and firmness would keep fatigue low and be comfortable even on long drives.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Exterior\"><\/span>Exterior<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The exterior design is a matter of taste, so I can\u2019t speak for everyone, but <strong>I really like it.<\/strong> It skillfully uses surfaces without relying on the vertical cuts or press lines that are so common these days, expressing freshness and beauty with a <strong>clean, sleek design.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16860\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3080-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"MAZDA3\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>What struck me as especially beautiful was the <strong>small gap and smoothness between the doors and body when viewed from the side.<\/strong> The door gaps are minimized, making the body appear as a single solid form.  <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rear_Seats\"><\/span>Rear Seats<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Honestly, the rear seats are <strong>not very spacious.<\/strong> But given the stunning exterior design, I think this compromise is understandable.  <\/p>\n<p>With the driver\u2019s seat adjusted to my position, there was about one and a half fists of space. But with the passenger seat reclined comfortably, there was almost no knee room in the back. <strong>However, the seatback is deeply contoured, so knees didn\u2019t actually touch.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3012-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MAZDA3 Rear Seats\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>On the downside, the rear door build quality felt cheap. <strong>While the front doors close with a solid, satisfying sound, the rear doors feel light and cheap both in closing sound and weight.<\/strong> Also, the door trim rattled when closing. The trim material itself is good quality, but the fit and finish aren\u2019t quite there.  <\/p>\n<p>As I always say, <strong>many Japanese compact cars skimp on rear door quality, and Mazda3 is no exception, which is disappointing.<\/strong> The car\u2019s exterior and interior quality are so good, so why can\u2019t they get this last detail right?  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mazda3_Skyactiv-X\"><\/span>Mazda3 Skyactiv-X<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The first test drive was the Skyactiv-X model. <strong>Skyactiv-X is Mazda\u2019s new engine, a new grade released just last fall.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>This was the Burgundy Selection, with a beautiful red color and a very elegant interior. The seats have a tasteful red tone that even feels formal. I really liked this interior and could imagine people buying it just for this reason.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16863\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3067-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MAZDA3 Interior Red\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>When I started the engine, I noticed the sound a bit. The volume was controlled and didn\u2019t feel cheap, but I could hear a <strong>somewhat rough, rattling or buzzing noise\u2014not as loud as a diesel but noticeable.<\/strong> Skyactiv-X uses \u201ccompression ignition\u201d like a diesel, firing at high compression. It can also ignite with spark plugs depending on the rev range, making it an engine that <strong>combines the best of gasoline and diesel engines.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16862\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3030-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MAZDA3 Driver's Seat\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Once moving, I felt a surprisingly firm ride. My impression was, \u201c<strong>This doesn\u2019t match the luxurious interior.<\/strong>\u201d The tires felt a bit stiff or the 18-inch wheels weren\u2019t fully tamed, causing noticeable vertical movement at low speeds.  <\/p>\n<p>At around 40-50 km\/h in city traffic, it wasn\u2019t much of an issue, but I wanted a smoother, gliding ride. It felt like the tires weren\u2019t perfectly round. <strong>In this regard, the 1.2 Golf 7 I used to drive felt more refined.<\/strong> But since the Mazda3\u2019s interior feels like a class or two above, my expectations for the ride were higher, which probably made this stand out more.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The engine has good low-end torque and is very easy to drive.<\/strong> The automatic transmission shifts smoothly with little shock. It\u2019s agile enough for city driving. The engine is smooth but not particularly sporty\u2014just good for its class. I climbed a steep hill in the test car without needing to press the accelerator much; it had plenty of power.  <\/p>\n<p>The brakes have a short stroke and respond to pedal force. <strong>They feel crisp and very controllable, but the stopping power is a bit lacking.<\/strong> With such a nice brake feel, I wish the braking force was a bit stronger.  <\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t get to test the handling much, but the steering feels very smooth and pleasant to turn. As a practical car, it\u2019s agile and should be fun on winding roads.  <\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/mazda3-testdrive\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 Test drive of the Skyactiv-G 2.0 and overall verdict!<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage-->  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Experiencing the Skyactiv-G 2.0<\/h3>\n<p>Next, I test drove the <strong>Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter engine.<\/strong> If I were to buy a Mazda3, this was the grade I wanted, so I had high expectations.  <\/p>\n<p>The engine didn\u2019t have the diesel-like noise of the Skyactiv-X and sounded very natural. \u201c<strong>Yeah, I like this one better,\u201d<\/strong> I thought as I started.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16864\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3028-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MAZDA3 Interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>The suspension was almost the same as the Skyactiv-X. This one felt a bit softer, but the difference was negligible.  <\/p>\n<p>However, personally, I just couldn\u2019t like this suspension. Even though the ride was firm and solid despite some vertical movement at low speeds, <strong>it didn\u2019t feel smooth on well-paved flat roads.<\/strong> It felt like there was some resistance in the tires; it lacked that effortless rolling feel. <strong>I\u2019m not defending European cars, but many global rivals feel smoother.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s drivetrain friction or the tires, but I think the ride quality could be improved.  <\/p>\n<p>Design-wise, 18-inch wheels look great, but I think 16 or 17 inches would be just right for the Mazda3. If I had to keep the standard 18-inch wheels, I\u2019d lower the tire pressure to around 2.2\u20132.3 bar. The manufacturer\u2019s spec is 2.5 bar front and rear. I think that would feel better.  <\/p>\n<p>The 2.0 engine doesn\u2019t feel underpowered, but it\u2019s not overly strong either. It runs well when revved and should be fine for typical use. <strong>However, after experiencing the Skyactiv-X, the torque feels lacking.<\/strong> Also, knowing recent hybrids and downsized turbo engines with strong low-end torque, the 199 Nm at 4000 rpm feels quite ordinary.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3014-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"MAZDA3 Shift Area\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>This engine is meant to be revved more than the Skyactiv-X, but impressions will vary depending on whether you like the sound.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Mazda is famous for its attention to sound, but I didn\u2019t really like this one.<\/strong> The sound is smooth and consistent, but it\u2019s neither a \u201ccoo\u201d nor a \u201cquorn\u201d\u2014it\u2019s just a plain \u201cbroom.\u201d With such a high-sense interior, <strong>I wish it had a bit more sportiness and sensuality.<\/strong> The mechanical and combustion noises from the engine aren\u2019t bad, so I wish the exhaust sound was a bit more prominent.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Mazda3 Overall Verdict<\/h3>\n<p>The very high-quality interior, snug feel, and beautiful exterior make it a very attractive car. Personally, I really like these points, and <strong>design-wise, it ranks quite high.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>I felt the wonderful interior and exterior quality didn\u2019t quite match the ride and engine feel.<\/strong> The visual impression of quality and the physical driving experience felt unbalanced to me. If the Mazda3\u2019s interior were more modest and utilitarian, the impression would be quite different.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The suspension and body are solid, without the floaty, mushy feel of older Japanese cars.<\/strong> That\u2019s a plus, and it should perform well at higher speeds. Overall, it\u2019s not a bad car at all. But <strong>at low speeds, I personally want a bit more smoothness, rolling ease, and refinement.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>In the end, I really liked the design, but after weighing everything, I decided to pass on buying this time and politely thanked the dealer before leaving.  <\/p>\n<p>This review is a bit on the critical side, but please understand it\u2019s based on my impressions from test driving the car mainly for urban commuting. It\u2019s also limited by my relatively short car history and experience. For long touring or leisure\/weekend driving, the evaluation might be different.
