Every water-cooled Porsche in our household has the Sport Chrono Package. It came standard on our Boxster GTS (981) and 911 GT3 (991.2), while we added it as an option on our Panamera (971).<\/strong><\/p>\nWhenever I drive on winding roads, I always switch to Sport or Sport mode<\/strong>. In the Boxster, Sport Plus mode activates auto-blip<\/strong> (I hear it takes Sport Plus or a higher setting to activate auto-blip in the 718)<\/span>. The Boxster\u2019s \u201cvrrrooom, vrrrooom<\/strong>\u201d roar echoing with every downshift is so satisfying that I always use Sport Plus on winding roads and highways.<\/p>\nBefore I knew much about Porsche, I thought, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t really matter whether you get the Sport Chrono Package or not. It\u2019s so expensive\u2014maybe I can do without it.<\/strong>\u201d Now, I\u2019m glad my husband made sure we had it.<\/p>\nThanks to the Sport Chrono Package, even an amateur driver like me can get more out of a Porsche\u2019s performance and better appreciate just how capable these cars are.<\/p>\n
I also kept the car in Sport Plus throughout a Porsche driving school program. There were plenty of moments that surprised me, like, \u201cIt can corner this well even while slaloming at such high speeds!\u201d<\/p>\n
My Husband\u2019s Take on the Sport Chrono Package<\/h3>\n
My husband often says, \u201cIf you\u2019re buying a Porsche, you have to get it. There\u2019s no question of leaving it off!<\/strong>\u201d So I asked him to explain why. It comes down to personal preference, but I don\u2019t think of a Porsche as a \u201cluxury car\u201d\u2014I think of it as a \u201chigh-performance car.\u201d<\/strong> So if there\u2019s a mode that lets you get 100% out of its performance, I don\u2019t want to leave that capability locked away.<\/p>\nA high-performance car, huh? He went on:<\/p>\n
It depends on the model, but there\u2019s a big difference between Sport and Sport Plus.<\/strong> In the Boxster GTS, for example, Sport Plus makes it feel like the car\u2019s dynamic performance has improved by about 10%. It feels like a waste not to experience that, so I definitely want the Sport Chrono Package.
\nPersonally, I don\u2019t really care whether it has the stopwatch or not.<\/p>\nWhen I said, \u201cOur family puts a lot of emphasis on driving\u2014we take mountain roads and track days, and cover long distances on the highway. I guess that\u2019s why the Sport Chrono Package is a must for us,\u201d he replied:<\/p>\n
That\u2019s right. But if you don\u2019t drive fast, mostly stick to city streets, and think of your Porsche as a \u201cluxury car,\u201d it\u2019s a feature you can easily do without.<\/strong>
\nAlso, Porsche options don\u2019t always add much to resale value, but the Sport Chrono Package can make a noticeable difference. In that sense, it\u2019s one of the options where the actual cost to you is relatively low, even after paying for it upfront.<\/strong><\/p>\nThat was his take.
