[Part 1]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/992-testdrive-wife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I finally had the chance to test drive the new Porsche 911,<\/a> and my husband wrote down his impressions. We\u2019ll share this in two parts, so please enjoy.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Although it\u2019s been over six months since the new Porsche 911 (Type 992) landed in Japan, I hadn\u2019t had the chance to test drive one at all\u2014until now. <strong>This time, I was fortunate to get behind the wheel of the Carrera 4S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since I was able to take my time driving both around town and on winding roads, I\u2019d like to share my impressions, including how it compares to the Boxster and the 991 model.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">New Porsche 911 (992)<\/h3>\n<p>The test car this time was a <strong>top-spec Carrera 4S equipped with nearly 6 million yen worth of options.<\/strong> Some of the main features include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u30fbGlass sunroof<br \/>\n\u30fbLeather interior<br \/>\n\u30fbRear axle steering<br \/>\n\u30fbSports exhaust<br \/>\n\u30fbSport Chrono package<br \/>\n\u30fbPower Steering Plus<br \/>\n\u30fb20\/21-inch Carrera Exclusive Design wheels<br \/>\n\u30fbLED matrix headlights<br \/>\n\u30fbAdaptive cruise control<br \/>\n\u30fb14-way sports seats<br \/>\n\u30fbBurmester high-end surround sound system<\/p>\n<p>\u2026and more.<\/p>\n<p>The body color is what I personally think might be \u201cthe next big thing after Crayon\u201d: <strong>Aventurine Green Metallic.<\/strong> I had been keeping an eye on this color for a while and really liked it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17329 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1155-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (992) Carrera 4S Aventurine Green Metallic\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seeing it in person, it\u2019s truly beautiful. Especially since the 992\u2019s design strongly echoes the classic air-cooled era, this elegant green suits it perfectly. <strong>Depending on the light and angle, it can look like a refined, mature green or sometimes even have a bluish tint.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17332 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_7147-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (992) Carrera 4S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In darker settings, it can even look like gunmetal. The color is close to the stunning iridescent wings of a jewel beetle, giving a calm, shimmering effect. <strong>\u201cAventurine\u201d originally refers to the color of certain power stones and is said to evoke images of forests and nature.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Interior<\/h4>\n<p>The first impression when sitting in the driver\u2019s seat can be summed up as a \u201c<strong>mini Panamera<\/strong>.\u201d It feels very refined and naturally newer compared to the 991.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17333 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1119-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (992) Carrera 4S Interior Slate Grey\/Crayon\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking over to the passenger side, the single dashboard trim stretching across the width recalls the interiors of air-cooled Porsches, giving the impression that <strong>the design consciously nods to the air-cooled heritage.<\/strong> <strong>It skillfully blends classic elements into a modern package.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The test car featured the Dark Paldao Interior Package with wood panels, which looked incredibly stylish. The wood feels like something you\u2019d find in a luxury hotel rather than the typical \u201cwood grain panel\u201d that might feel dated\u2014this is a tasteful, mature 911.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17334 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1120-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Dark Paldao Interior Package\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Driving<\/h4>\n<p>Starting the engine, the sports exhaust-equipped car makes a fairly bold \u201c<strong>bobobobo bot<\/strong>\u201d sound. Even at idle, you can hear that distinctive Porsche blend of metallic and exhaust tones.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17335 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_7149-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (992) Carrera 4S Sports Exhaust\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The throttle feel isn\u2019t much different from the 991, so switching over is smooth. While cruising through town, I was surprised by <strong>the seamlessness and refinement of the PDK\u2019s gear shifts.<\/strong> The 992 uses an 8-speed PDK, apparently the same spec as the one introduced in the 971 Panamera, but an evolved version.<\/p>\n<p>The 971 Panamera\u2019s PDK is already very smooth but you can still feel the gear changes a bit more. <strong>The 992\u2019s transmission, while not quite as smooth as the latest torque converter automatics, comes very close.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you weren\u2019t told beforehand, you probably wouldn\u2019t be able to tell the difference at all. Acceleration and deceleration between about 30 km\/h and 60 km\/h feel very pleasant. Thanks to ample engine power, you hardly have to think about the gears; just press the accelerator and it responds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17336 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1171-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (992) Test Drive Report\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here, the PDK acts completely behind the scenes, smoothly selecting the optimal gear based on how much and how quickly you press the accelerator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The engine sound is also very satisfying.<\/strong> As I\u2019ll mention later, the sports exhaust\u2019s ON\/OFF doesn\u2019t change the volume much; <strong>even with it off, the sound is fairly loud.<\/strong> It\u2019s quiet at idle or low load, but when you press the accelerator a bit, you get a clear, metallic and exhaust note from the rear that sounds tougher than the 991\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17331 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1111-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (992) Carrera Executive Design Wheels\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My wife said it sounded \u201c<strong>air-cooled-like<\/strong>,\u201d and I agree. Of course, it\u2019s not the same, but <strong>you can feel the developers\u2019 intent to somehow revive that sound feeling despite today\u2019s strict regulations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The brakes on this test car are standard cast iron, but they left a very good impression\u2014very firm and precise. Comparing them to the cast iron brakes on our 981 Boxster GTS and the PCCB brakes on the 991.2 GT3, they feel closer to the latter. The deceleration control is easy, and the uniquely Porsche sensation of \u201c<strong>braking is fun<\/strong>\u201d comes through clearly in the 992 as well.<\/p>\n<p>Porsche brakes really are outstanding.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Winding Roads<\/h4>\n<p>Taking the car onto winding roads, I checked the steering feel. The steering operation isn\u2019t drastically different from the previous generation and feels natural. However, the initial response when turning the wheel is quite different.<\/p>\n<p>When you experience it for the first time, you can\u2019t help but say \u201c<strong>Wow!<\/strong>\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s that quick.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to our Boxster and GT3, this feeling is closer to the GT3. That makes sense because the steering ratio has been changed, and <strong>the 992\u2019s front track width has widened to 1589 mm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For reference, the 991.2 GT3\u2019s front track is 1551 mm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17337 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_7142-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (992) Carrera 4S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Even on tight mountain switchbacks, it\u2019s extremely easy to drive.<\/strong> Unlike air-cooled 964 models, which require consciously loading the front to turn properly, the 992 doesn\u2019t need that.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to air-cooled Porsches, it feels like you\u2019re always driving with full weight on the front. Uphill or downhill, it hardly matters.
