I received a request saying, &#8220;<strong>please write about whether air suspension is necessary or not<\/strong>,&#8221; so today I\u2019d like to talk about that.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you so much for all the other comments as well. It might take me a little time, but I hope to write review articles in order.<\/p>\n<p>Air suspension is short for &#8220;<strong>air suspension system<\/strong>.&#8221; According to online sources,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">it\u2019s a vehicle-specific component that uses air springs (suspension) to adjust the ride height and soften shocks while driving (such as bumps on the road). When going over a step, it raises the car to the maximum height, and while driving, it lowers it as much as possible, allowing the ride height to be controlled according to the situation.<br \/>\nAlso, by installing air suspension, comfort is improved and shocks to the vehicle and its cargo are reduced, which is why it\u2019s often fitted on long-haul trucks (buses) and luxury cars.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Reference article: <a href=\"https:\/\/matome.response.jp\/articles\/2437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What is Air Suspension? Benefits, Structure, Price, Ride Comfort, and Differences from Coilovers<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In contrast, there is coil spring suspension, which uses the spring\u2019s rebound force.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of which, quite a while ago, I asked my husband, &#8220;<strong>what\u2019s the difference between air suspension and coil spring suspension?<\/strong>&#8221; Since I didn\u2019t understand at all, he once took apart a radio-controlled car to explain it to me\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17178\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_4375-1024x768-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By the way, for Porsche, air suspension is not even offered on 2-door sports cars like the 911, Cayenne, or Boxster; it\u2019s available on the Macan, Cayenne, and Panamera. For example, the current Cayenne offers a 3-chamber air suspension as an option <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(standard on some trims)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>With just the flick of a switch, you can enjoy everything from sporty driving to comfortable cruising, <strong>while roll is reduced and handling that\u2019s hard to believe is from an SUV is achieved.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17193\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17193\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/B1B589CF-BA02-4999-A851-31CBAA2BF130-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Air suspension control on the 958 Cayenne\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Air suspension control switch on the 958 Cayenne<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>As for the Panamera, all Japanese-spec models currently come standard with air suspension. When the 971 Panamera was first released, the base model came with coil springs as standard, but shortly after, the Japanese market switched to air suspension as standard.<\/p>\n<p>The Taycan also comes standard with air suspension, according to what I read.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Does_Air_Suspension_Differ_from_Coil_Spring_Suspension\"><\/span>How Does Air Suspension Differ from Coil Spring Suspension?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Air suspension tends to be associated with a softer ride, but <strong>which feels better is really a matter of personal preference.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I asked my husband about the difference in ride comfort between Porsche\u2019s air suspension and coil spring suspension, he said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">For a typical car, <strong>personally, I tend to prefer coil spring suspension.<\/strong> But Porsche\u2019s air suspension is different from other manufacturers\u2019\u2014it has no floaty feeling at all, with firm damping, which I like.<br \/>\n<strong>The air suspension I liked best was on the early Macan Turbo.<\/strong> It had an exquisite balance of smoothness and sportiness. The ride was silky smooth, yet it felt solid even when pushing hard. On the other hand, the later 958 Cayenne GTS air suspension felt a bit more SUV-like, with noticeable swaying at low speeds. But maybe that\u2019s good for an SUV.<br \/>\nBasically, air suspension generally offers better ride comfort, but what really impressed me was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/new-cayyenn-testdrive-impression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coil spring suspension on the base model of the current Cayenne<\/a>. That car had PDCC, which might have helped, but it was the best suspension I\u2019ve personally experienced\u2014super smooth yet firm.<br \/>\nI remember watching the new Cayenne episode of Car Graphic TV, where Matsutoya-san praised it, saying, \u2018<strong>I thought it was air suspension<\/strong>.\u2019 That made me feel my impression was spot on.<\/p>\n<p>I see\u2026 When I asked, &#8220;<strong>So what\u2019s the advantage of having air suspension?<\/strong>&#8221; he said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Personally, I think the biggest benefit is <strong>having more options for ride comfort and driving feel.<\/strong> For example, the 971 Panamera lets you choose from three ride heights: low, medium, and high.<br \/>\nBut \u201chigh\u201d can only be used at very low speeds, so it\u2019s really only for clearing big bumps. \u201cMedium\u201d is the normal ride height, and at this height, you can choose between normal and sport settings on PASM.<br \/>\n\u201cLow\u201d is automatically selected when PASM is set to Sport Plus. By the way, you can\u2019t combine PASM normal with \u201clow\u201d height; \u201clow\u201d always pairs with PASM sport. It\u2019s a bit complicated, but <strong>you can find the best combination for your preferences from various settings.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Cayenne works similarly, but for it, \u201clow\u201d can only be used at very low speeds or when stopped. I\u2019m not sure why it\u2019s there, but I usually use it just to make the car look cool when taking photos (laughs).<br \/>\nAs for resale value, <strong>from what I\u2019ve seen in the used market, having air suspension or not doesn\u2019t seem to make much difference.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17192\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17192\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17192\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/66BBCE3A-B94E-4675-9A3A-4C281741C4D1-1280x854.jpeg\" alt=\"Air suspension settings screen on the 971 Panamera\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Air suspension settings screen on the 971 Panamera<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Then I asked, &#8220;<strong>I often see online that air suspension breaks down a lot, but does it really fail often? Our Panamera is almost at 30,000 km and hasn\u2019t had any issues, right?<\/strong>&#8221; He replied,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Yeah, I do hear about failures occasionally. But our Panamera has had no problems at all. Air suspension repairs can be expensive, so if you\u2019re buying used, it\u2019s best to get a certified pre-owned car with a good warranty, or be prepared for repair costs if not.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d really like to try driving a car with air suspension and one with coil springs back-to-back to really feel the difference\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What Is Air Suspension?
