Buyers could choose between a seven-speed manual and seven-speed PDK, with the PDK-equipped car reaching 100 km\/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 289 km\/h (180 mph). But the Black Edition\u2019s appeal goes well beyond the numbers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-41988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_6784-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"991 Black Edition\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Special_Equipment_Gives_It_a_Premium_Feel\"><\/span>Special Equipment Gives It a Premium Feel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Black Edition\u2019s standout feature is its <strong>20-inch Turbo wheels<\/strong>\u2014an option not offered on the standard Carrera base model. It\u2019s an unusual, indulgent combination: a base-model 911 wearing wheels typically associated with the Turbo.<\/p>\n<p>Also notable are the optional LED headlights fitted to this early-generation car. Their two-tier design closely resembles the headlights on the later 991.2, making an early 991.1 equipped this way a rare sight. In my experience, base-model 718 Boxsters without PASM, for example, can feel considerably busier around town than cars equipped with the system.<\/p>\n<p>The Black Edition, however, is a pleasant surprise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-41989\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_6780-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Turbo wheels on the 991 Black Edition\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite the 20-inch diameter, the wheels\u2019 weight seems to work in the car\u2019s favor, giving it a composed, supple ride. Compared with a red early 991.1 base model on 19-inch wheels that I drove previously, this car even feels more settled. It\u2019s a rare case where the added weight isn\u2019t a drawback, but instead contributes to a more premium feel.<\/p>\n<p>The handling is just as impressive. A measured amount of body roll makes it easy to sense how the tires are gripping the road and how the weight is transferring. PASM may be the better choice for newer drivers, but for those who enjoy controlling and actively driving their car, this suspension is a delight. It makes you want to keep chasing one bend after another on a winding road.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Appeal_of_the_34-Liter_Engine\"><\/span>The Appeal of the 3.4-Liter Engine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Black Edition\u2019s 3.4-liter flat-six is also found in the 981 Boxster S and GTS, but it takes on a very different character in the 911. When accelerating from low revs around town, it can\u2019t match the 3.8-liter S engine\u2019s generous torque. But on mountain roads, its real strengths come through. Because it doesn\u2019t deliver excessive acceleration as the revs climb, you can enjoy pushing it harder\u2014even on public roads.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-41986\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_6786-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Gauge cluster in the 991 Black Edition\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The exhaust note deserves special mention.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even with the Sport Exhaust fitted, it\u2019s not as over-the-top as the GTS. Instead, the 3.4-liter delivers a lighter, more refined sound. Where the 3.8-liter S and GTS produce a deeper, more forceful roar, this engine sounds smoother and more polished. It revs happily to the top of the range, with an appeal that <strong>naturally puts a smile on your face<\/strong> behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_Ideal_Porsche_for_Drivers_Seeking_a_True_Companion\"><\/span>An Ideal Porsche for Drivers Seeking a True Companion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As modern Porsches have become more capable, their mechanical precision has come to the fore.<\/p>\n<p>The 991.2 and 992 generations are unquestionably more capable, but they can feel less communicative and approachable\u2014as if they have less of the companion-like character that makes a car feel personal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-41981\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_6868-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"991 Black Edition\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In that respect, an early 991.1\u2014especially a base model like this Black Edition\u2014may represent one of the last generations of <strong>more human, more engaging Porsches<\/strong>. The S has the edge when accelerating again around town, but on a mountain road, the base model can be more rewarding. It doesn\u2019t gather speed too quickly as you raise the revs, and it comes alive when the driver gets involved. That character makes it a true companion.<\/p>\n<p>Early 991.1 base models currently sell for around \u00a58\u20139 million on the used market. Finding a sports car this accomplished at that price may be one of your last chances to experience Porsche ownership at this level of value. A special edition like the Black Edition could be even more desirable.
