In this second installment, we\u2019ll take a closer look at what this car does best: its handling, highway performance, and comfort as a convertible.<\/p>\n<p>After covering 1,000 kilometers behind the wheel, one thing became clear: the SL400 is an exceptionally accomplished grand tourer. It\u2019s more than a way to get from A to B\u2014it makes the drive itself the destination.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Essence_of_Mercedes-Benz_Handling\"><\/span>The Essence of Mercedes-Benz Handling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The SL400\u2019s handling feels unmistakably Mercedes-Benz. Its straight-line stability is remarkable, with the car always seeming eager to track true. That quality comes into its own on the highway.<\/p>\n<p>You might expect such a strong preference for straight-line running to translate into pronounced understeer in corners. But here\u2019s where Mercedes-Benz gets things just right: the car turns precisely in response to your steering input. That dependable, confidence-inspiring response\u2014never leaving the driver second-guessing the car\u2014is a reflection of Mercedes-Benz\u2019s safety-first philosophy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-43634\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/APC_0173-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving the R231 SL400\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unlike the more visceral handling of a Porsche or BMW, the SL responds to the driver\u2019s intentions with reassuring precision. It feels like a setup shaped by a focus on avoiding danger. This isn\u2019t a car built to chase lap times at the limit, but it\u2019s ideally suited to covering long distances in comfort and safety.<\/p>\n<p>I also let a few Porsche owners take it for a drive, and every one of them came away impressed. The SL400 is especially enjoyable in Sport mode, with the kind of appeal that makes you want to keep driving. That may be the very essence of a grand tourer.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Built_for_the_Autobahn_at_Home_on_the_Highway\"><\/span>Built for the Autobahn, at Home on the Highway<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On the highway, the Active Body Control system\u2019s ability to keep the body level becomes even more impressive.<\/p>\n<p>It delivers a degree of stability that conventional suspension simply can\u2019t match. In a YouTube video, Roland described the ride of his R231 SL65 as \u201con par with a Rolls-Royce Wraith.\u201d That\u2019s exactly how the SL400 feels to me.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-43632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/APC_0179-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving the R231 SL400\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As speed rises, ABC automatically lowers the car, helping it feel more planted on the road. Cruising at speed in Sport mode is pure pleasure. A Porsche may have the edge at racing speeds, of course, but few cars can match the SL for covering the Osaka\u2013Tokyo distance without tiring you out\u2014even without a break.<\/p>\n<p>The SL was born for the Autobahn, so Japan\u2019s slower roads\u2014or, to put it another way, its highways\u2014are easy work.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 years ago, I was cruising in the passing lane on the Tomei Expressway in my Audi TT Coup\u00e9 when an R230 SL500 suddenly appeared behind me and swept past on the left, probably at over 200 km\/h. The car\u2019s composure has stayed with me ever since. That arrow-straight stability is the SL\u2019s defining strength.<\/p>\n<p>The SL\u2019s confidence at speed makes a 500-kilometer day behind the wheel feel entirely within reach. When I\u2019m on the highway, I find myself wanting to see how much farther I can go.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Open-Air_Comfort_and_Sumptuous_Seats\"><\/span>Open-Air Comfort and Sumptuous Seats<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The SL400\u2019s seats don\u2019t have the massage or dynamic seat functions found in higher-spec models such as the SL550 and AMG versions, but they\u2019re still impressively comfortable. Thick cushioning and a wide range of adjustments help keep fatigue at bay, even on long drives. The ventilation function is modest by today\u2019s standards, but heated seats and AIRSCARF\u2014which blows warm air around your neck\u2014make open-top driving comfortable even in winter.<\/p>\n<p>With the top down, there\u2019s far less wind buffeting than in a Boxster\u2014among the best in its class for an open car. Raise the rear wind deflector and comfort improves further, making highway driving perfectly manageable. It doesn\u2019t quite match a 911 Cabriolet with its wind deflector raised, but it\u2019s comfortable enough to cruise on the highway with the roof down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-43623\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC05680-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"R231 SL400\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The wind deflector deploys at the touch of a button, making it wonderfully convenient. Driving with the top down offers a special kind of enjoyment that only the SL can deliver.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however, one thing I\u2019m not happy with: the sound system.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the higher-spec models, the Japanese-market SL400 doesn\u2019t come with a Harman\/Kardon audio system. Instead, it has a basic factory setup with eight speakers\u2014and the sound quality is truly poor. I\u2019ve never been fussy about car audio, but even I find it disappointing. The treble is harsh and tinny, and the sibilant \u201cs\u201d sounds in vocals are particularly grating. The midrange is muddy, too, and no amount of equalizer adjustment can fix it. I\u2019m considering an upgrade, perhaps by replacing the speakers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42113-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42113-2\" class=\"wp-image-42113 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC05612-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Seats in the R231 SL400\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42113-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sadly, Mercedes-Benz no longer makes seats this substantial.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-43616\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC05732-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"R231 SL400\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Grand_Tourers_True_Strength_on_a_Long_Drive\"><\/span>The Grand Tourer\u2019s True Strength on a Long Drive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I took the SL400 on a short tour toward Wakayama, and the fun of driving through the winding roads of the countryside was unforgettable.<\/p>\n<p>A 100-kilometer drive in a Porsche can be intensely rewarding, but it also leaves you with a fair amount of the good kind of fatigue. In the SL, I could cover 200 kilometers and feel just as fresh. That easygoing appeal\u2014the way it makes you want to keep adding miles\u2014is the car\u2019s greatest strength.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-43638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_6985-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"R231 SL400\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On a tour, you encounter all kinds of roads and driving conditions. A Porsche might leave you thinking, \u201cThat road was great\u2014and so was that one.\u201d The SL, by contrast, makes every road enjoyable and leaves you wanting to drive farther. You can keep covering ground without wearing yourself out. It\u2019s a car that makes you want to drive all day.<\/p>\n<p>That, to me, is the essence of a grand tourer: a rare blend of comfort and driving enjoyment that makes the journey itself the point.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m convinced the R231 is the last of the true SLs. I\u2019ve grown so fond of this car that I can\u2019t imagine parting with it anytime soon. If you\u2019re interested, it\u2019s well worth looking for one on the used-car market.
