Last year, I decided that I\u2019d make more time for collecting temple and shrine stamps, so I\u2019m planning to visit all kinds of shrines with my Taycan. Most of our driving is for work around Osaka, and even then, we usually cover only about 100 km. There\u2019s no need to stop and charge along the way; <strong>charging overnight at home is more than enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I usually charge to 80%. Even if the battery drops to around 50%, it\u2019s back close to 80% by the next morning. That gives us a range of roughly 300 km, which is plenty for everyday driving.<\/p>\n<p>I only use rapid charging when I\u2019m driving a relatively long distance. On this trip, we were heading to Awaji Island, where the kids could play at a park and we could visit a few shrines. With that kind of itinerary, we\u2019d be covering around 150\u2013200 km.<\/p>\n<p>We expected to get home with about 15% charge left. \u201cWe\u2019ll probably be fine, but maybe we should top up at a highway service area on the way back, just to be safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Hassle_and_Frustration_of_Paying_as_a_Guest\"><\/span>The Hassle and Frustration of Paying as a Guest<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We use rapid chargers maybe once a month, if that. <strong>So, honestly, paying around \u00a54,000 a month for an e-Mobility Power (eMP) membership feels like a waste.<\/strong> Membership makes charging cheaper, but we use it so infrequently that pay-as-you-go guest charging seems like the better option.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44198-2\" style=\"width: 453px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44198-2\" class=\"wp-image-44198 size-size3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2026-01-05-15.28.32-443x480.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"443\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44198-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image source: e-Mobility Power guest charging rates<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But paying as a guest is a real hassle. The charging cable is heavy and looks like an elephant\u2019s trunk, so just plugging it in is a workout. Then you have to stand at the terminal with your phone and wallet, scan a QR code, and enter your credit card details every single time. It usually takes two or three minutes just to get charging started.<\/p>\n<p>And all that effort would be fine if it worked reliably. <strong>The problem is, errors happen far too often.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d say I get an error about one time in three. I start the process thinking, \u201cIt probably won\u2019t work this time either,\u201d and when it does connect on the first try, I\u2019m genuinely surprised: \u201cWow, it worked! We got lucky!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same thing happened on the drive back from Awaji Island. We stopped at Awaji Island Highway Oasis, and\u2014as expected\u2014the charger threw an error. Normally, it works if I try again once or twice, but this time nothing worked, no matter how many times I tried. <strong>Even when it briefly seemed to connect, the error returned 15 seconds later.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And even though it only connected for a moment, I was still charged \u00a5385. (Sigh.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-44199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/G8mlXOZbMAID85u-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"e-Mobility Power charging error\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were two chargers, so I tried the other one, too. Same result. I was wondering, \u201cIs something wrong with the Taycan, or is it CHAdeMO?\u201d when a Toyota pulled in and started charging. But that car ran into the same error I had.<\/p>\n<p>So perhaps it was a problem with the CHAdeMO charger itself. In the end, I gave up on charging, set the navigation system to prioritize distance, and drove home on the Hanshin Expressway\u2014which was packed with evening traffic on a holiday.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Huge_Difference_Between_CHAdeMO_and_Tesla_Superchargers\"><\/span>The Huge Difference Between CHAdeMO and Tesla Superchargers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t resist posting about the experience on X, and the post got a lot of impressions. (Laughs.) I guess plenty of people are just as frustrated with the charging experience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44200 size-size3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2026-01-05-15.31.26-606x480.jpg\" alt=\"CHAdeMO charging error\" width=\"606\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A few days later, I had a chance to travel in a Tesla. I stopped at a Supercharger near my workplace, thinking I could get some work done while I waited\u2014and was amazed by how easy the whole process was.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just plug in the slim charging cable with a quick click. That\u2019s it.<\/strong> (I\u2019d already added my credit card to the app, so I didn\u2019t even need to use my phone.)<\/p>\n<p>It was almost ridiculously easy. I\u2019d thought I could get some work done while the car charged, but the battery was back up to 80% in no time, and I was soon on my way.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44201 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/G9EY9Ehb0Agqi6c-960x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"Tesla Supercharger\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t help thinking, \u201cWhy can\u2019t charging be this simple everywhere?\u201d It was another reminder of just how good Tesla\u2019s Supercharger network is.<\/p>\n<p>The Taycan is a truly wonderful car. That\u2019s why I hope Japan\u2019s rapid-charging infrastructure will become a lot more seamless.<\/p>\n<p>Just to be safe, I\u2019m planning to have Porsche Center check the car\u2019s rapid-charging system early in the new year. (Home charging works without a problem.)
