At the end of last year, I decided, <strong>&#8220;From now on, I\u2019ll make time to visit shrines and collect goshuin stamps,&#8221;<\/strong> so I\u2019m planning to explore various shrines with my beloved Taycan. My daily driving mainly involves trips around Osaka, usually about 100 km or less. That means there\u2019s no real need to charge mid-trip, and <strong>charging overnight at home easily covers our needs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I usually keep the battery charged up to 80%, and even if it drops to around 50%, it\u2019s back near 80% by the next morning. That\u2019s enough for about 300 km of driving, so daily life is rarely disrupted.<\/p>\n<p>Fast charging is reserved for occasions like this one, when <strong>we\u2019re covering relatively long distances.<\/strong> On this trip to Awaji Island, we spent time letting the kids play at parks and visited several shrines, resulting in a driving distance of about 150 to 200 km.<\/p>\n<p>We expected to return home with around 15% battery left, but <strong>\u201cWell, it should be fine, but just in case, let\u2019s charge at the highway service area on the way back,\u201d<\/strong> we decided.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Hassle_and_Frustration_of_Visitor_Fast_Charging\"><\/span>The Hassle and Frustration of Visitor Fast Charging<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I use fast chargers maybe once a month or less. <strong>So honestly, I feel it\u2019s not worth paying the roughly 4,000 yen monthly fee to become an e-Mobility Power (eMP) member.<\/strong> While membership offers cheaper charging rates, my infrequent use means I usually opt for pay-as-you-go visitor charging.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44198\" style=\"width: 453px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44198\" class=\"wp-image-44198 size-size3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2026-01-05-15.28.32-443x480.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"443\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image source: e-Mobility Power Visitor Charging Rate Table<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But visitor charging is truly a pain. The charging cable itself is heavy and cumbersome\u2014like an \u201celephant\u2019s trunk\u201d\u2014and just plugging it in is a challenge. Then you have to stand in front of the terminal with your smartphone and wallet, scan QR codes, and enter your credit card details every single time. It usually takes 2 to 3 minutes just to get the charging started.<\/p>\n<p>And the real problem is the sheer number of errors.<\/p>\n<p>From my experience, about one in three attempts ends in an error. I often think, <strong>&#8220;This probably won\u2019t work again,&#8221;<\/strong> and when it does succeed on the first try, I\u2019m genuinely surprised and think, <strong>&#8220;Wow, lucky this time!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The same thing happened on the way back from Awaji Island. When we stopped at the Awaji Island Highway Oasis, the charger gave an error again. Usually, retrying twice or so gets it going, but this time no matter how many times we tried, it failed. <strong>Even when it briefly connected, 15 seconds later it would error out again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, we were still charged 385 yen for that brief connection (ouch).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-44199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/G8mlXOZbMAID85u-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"e-Mobility Power Error\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were two chargers, so I tried the other one as well, but the result was the same. I wondered, <strong>&#8220;Is it the Taycan or the CHAdeMO charger that\u2019s the problem?&#8221;<\/strong> Just then, a Toyota vehicle arrived and started charging\u2014but it showed the same error.<\/p>\n<p>So this time, it was probably a CHAdeMO issue. In the end, we gave up on charging, set the navigation to prioritize shortest distance, and braved the heavily congested Hanshin Expressway on a holiday evening to get home.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Stark_Contrast_with_Teslas_Supercharger_Experience\"><\/span>The Stark Contrast with Tesla\u2019s Supercharger Experience<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t help but vent my frustration on X (formerly Twitter), and the post got a lot of impressions (laughs). Clearly, many share the same dissatisfaction with the charging infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44200 size-size3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2026-01-05-15.31.26-606x480.jpg\" alt=\"CHAdeMO Error\" width=\"606\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A few days later, I had the chance to travel in a Tesla. I stopped by a Supercharger near my workplace, planning to wait and get some work done while charging\u2014and it was astonishingly easy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just plug in the slim charging cable with a satisfying click. That\u2019s it.<\/strong> (If your card is registered in the app beforehand, you don\u2019t even need to touch your phone.)<\/p>\n<p>It was so effortless. I had planned to get some work done while waiting, but the battery was already 80% charged before I knew it, and I was on my way again.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44201 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/G9EY9Ehb0Agqi6c-960x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"Tesla Supercharger\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t help but think, \u201cWhy can\u2019t this be the standard everywhere?\u201d while once again appreciating the excellence of Tesla\u2019s Supercharger network.<\/p>\n<p>The Taycan is truly an amazing car. That\u2019s why I hope Japan\u2019s fast charging infrastructure can become smoother and more reliable.<\/p>\n<p>Just to be safe, I plan to have the Porsche Center check the Taycan\u2019s fast charging system early this year (standard charging works fine).
