In all, I drove 14 different cars. I\u2019m leaving out the four cars I bought myself last year, so this year\u2019s awards are chosen from the cars readers kindly let me drive.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/9922-gt3touring-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche 992.2 911 GT3 (manual)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/9922-gt3-mt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche 992.2 911 GT3 Touring (PDK)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/9922-gts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche 992.2 911 Carrera GTS<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/9912-gt3rs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche 991.2 911 GT3 RS<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/bmw-m3-custom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMW E46 M3 (modified)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/9911-blacked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche 991.1 911 Carrera Black Edition<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/%e3%82%ab%e3%82%a4%e3%82%a8%e3%83%b3gts%e3%82%af%e3%83%bc%e3%83%9a%e8%a9%a6%e4%b9%97%e3%83%ac%e3%83%93%e3%83%a5%e3%83%bc%ef%bc%9av8%e3%82%a8%e3%83%b3%e3%82%b8%e3%83%b3%e3%81%ae%e9%ad%85%e5%8a%9b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche E3 Cayenne GTS Coupe (facelift)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/992turbo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche 992.1 911 Turbo<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/defender-octa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Land Rover Defender OCTA Edition One<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/9922-carrerat-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche 992.2 911 Carrera T (manual)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/9922-carrera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche 992.2 911 Carrera (PDK)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/macan-ev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche Macan Electric<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/86gr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toyota 86 GR<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/mazda-ndroadstar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mazda MX-5 Miata (early ND)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My judging criteria are the same as ever.<\/p>\n<p>Driving enjoyment comes first, with a particular focus on how much fun each car is on a road trip or in everyday use. I look beyond headline figures such as acceleration and top speed, prioritizing <strong>how pleasant and easy a car is to drive on public roads\u2014and, above all, whether it puts a smile on your face<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, without further ado, here are my 2025 Test Drive Car of the Year picks.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Third_Place_Porsche_9921_911_Turbo_%E2%80%94_The_Perfect_Balance_Without_Adding_or_Taking_Away\"><\/span>Third Place: Porsche 992.1 911 Turbo \u2014 The Perfect Balance, Without Adding or Taking Away<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Third place goes to the Porsche 992.1 911 Turbo\u2014not the Turbo S, but the standard Turbo.<\/p>\n<p>If I had to sum up what makes this car special, I\u2019d say it\u2019s <strong>\u201cperfect just as it is.\u201d<\/strong> The balance is simply superb. The Turbo S is also an exceptionally accomplished car, with very little to criticize, but the standard Turbo has an engine tune that feels more at home in everyday driving. It\u2019s hard to imagine a better car for covering ground quickly and comfortably.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-41692\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_6568-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"992 Turbo\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What impressed me most was the way it picks up speed in the mid-range, with such natural-feeling torque.<\/p>\n<p>It accelerates with the smoothness of a large-displacement naturally aspirated engine, without any noticeable turbo lag. Switch to Sport or Sport Plus, of course, and the car takes on a different character. Still, <strong>drivers who prefer a GT3 or something more focused and lightweight might find it a little too refined<\/strong>. By my own criteria, though, it\u2019s a fantastic car.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the kind of car you\u2019d want to buy, cherish, and keep as a trusted companion\u2014and one you\u2019d want to drive wherever you\u2019re going.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Second_Place_Mazda_MX-5_Miata_Early_ND_%E2%80%94_Pure_Driving_Joy_for_Under_20000\"><\/span>Second Place: Mazda MX-5 Miata (Early ND) \u2014 Pure Driving Joy for Under $20,000<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Second place goes to the early ND-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata.<\/p>\n<p>This was my first proper drive in a nearly stock Miata, and <strong>it made me realize just how good this car really is.<\/strong> The engine isn\u2019t especially powerful, and the acceleration isn\u2019t explosive. Its real magic lies in its nimble, flowing cornering and the way its power and handling are perfectly suited to Japan\u2019s winding roads.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-35410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_3644-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Mazda MX-5 Miata\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>People look for different things in a sports car. <strong>If power and straight-line acceleration are your priorities, this probably isn\u2019t the car for you.<\/strong> But if you value the simple pleasure of driving\u2014and those moments when you can\u2019t help but smile behind the wheel\u2014it\u2019s hard to find a better fit. If this were a ranking based on fun alone, the Miata might well have taken the top spot for 2025. Just two or three corners are enough to make you think, \u201cWait, has it always been this much fun?\u201d It\u2019s easy to control, happy to be revved, and its gearing feels just right for Japan\u2019s mountain roads, with a great balance of power and ratios.<\/p>\n<p>Long highway cruises aren\u2019t necessarily its strongest suit. But <strong>for Japan\u2019s everyday roads, quiet country routes, and mountain passes, it\u2019s hard to think of a better car.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And the fact that you can buy such a wonderful car for less than $20,000 is something to be grateful for.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"First_Place_Porsche_9922_911_GT3_Manual_%E2%80%94_The_GT3_Made_More_Accessible\"><\/span>First Place: Porsche 992.2 911 GT3 (Manual) \u2014 The GT3, Made More Accessible<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>And the winner is the Porsche 992.2 911 GT3 with a manual transmission.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase <strong>\u201cthe GT3 made more accessible\u201d<\/strong> sums up why I chose this car as my Test Drive Car of the Year. Until now, the GT3 has been a car with a fairly steep learning curve. That demanding character is part of its appeal, but it can also make the car a little tiring for someone like me, who enjoys using a car extensively on public roads and on road trips. The 992.2 has a more compliant ride, and much of the extraneous noise has been dialed back, making it far easier to drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-43883\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_7277-1280x958.jpeg\" alt=\"992.2 GT3\" width=\"1280\" height=\"958\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The manual transmission is also exceptionally easy to use. Compared with the manual in the 991 GT3 Touring I used to own, <strong>this one is a significant step forward in drivability.<\/strong> And because the 992.2 has much shorter gearing, you can enjoy more of its 9,000-rpm engine on public roads. In previous GT3s, it was difficult to get the engine spinning high without driving very fast. This time, <strong>you can keep the revs up even around town, which makes the car a real pleasure to drive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So why choose the regular GT3 over the GT3 Touring?<\/p>\n<p>Because this car had a manual transmission. The gearbox is exceptionally well executed, and the GT3\u2019s traditional ability to shift up while keeping your foot on the throttle is brilliant. The improved feel and ease of operation reminded me that, with manual transmissions, the latest really can be the greatest. This 992.2 GT3 is a perfect example. And the rear wing gives it the unmistakable look of a GT3\u2014another part of its appeal.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve driven a number of 992-generation models, but <strong>of the 992.2 models, the GT3 is easily the most fun for me<\/strong>. With the earlier 992, I particularly enjoyed the Carrera T and Dakar. This time, though, <strong>the GT3 is my clear favorite.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Looking_Forward_to_More_Great_Cars_in_2026\"><\/span>Looking Forward to More Great Cars in 2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>My 2025 Test Drive Car of the Year picks are the 992.1 911 Turbo in third place, the early ND Mazda MX-5 Miata in second, and the 992.2 911 GT3 with a manual transmission in first.<\/p>\n<p>Each car has its own distinct appeal, and the order would likely change depending on what you value most. But based on my priorities\u2014driving enjoyment and the practicality to take a car touring\u2014these three left the strongest impression.<\/p>\n<p>This year, I hope to test-drive more great cars and share plenty of insights on the blog.
