We loaded my beloved Taycan 4S Cross Turismo onto a ferry and drove about 1,200 kilometers across Hokkaido. Flying there and renting a car locally would be the easiest and most convenient option. That was our initial plan. However, my husband said,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Hokkaido is huge. We&#8217;ll be driving a lot, and honestly, I don\u2019t like the idea of always relying on a rental car for all the long drives.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He had a point! (Laughs.)<\/p>\n<p>Our family isn&#8217;t about city sightseeing or shopping\u2014we prefer immersing ourselves in nature. Especially for the kids, I want them to have experiences that fully awaken their senses while they\u2019re still young and impressionable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-45232 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC08475-1280x853.jpg\" alt=\"Canoeing in the headwaters of the Kushiro River, Hokkaido\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/> On this trip, we enjoyed canoeing at the headwaters of the Kushiro River.<\/caption>\n<p>So while Sapporo is nice, we also wanted to explore the nature-rich eastern region of Kushiro. This meant longer drives were inevitable.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, we concluded it was better to enjoy the drive in our own car\u2014something fun to drive.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_We_Chose_the_Taycan_Over_Tesla\"><\/span>Why We Chose the Taycan Over Tesla<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Once we decided to drive, Tesla was our first consideration. The Autopilot feature would be a blessing on long journeys, making highway driving much easier.<\/p>\n<p>But we discovered that Tesla\u2019s Supercharger network in Hokkaido is sparse. Even if we ferried the Tesla there, without many Superchargers on location, charging could become inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, CHAdeMO chargers are relatively common throughout Hokkaido.<\/p>\n<p>So, the thought was, <strong>&#8220;Why not just take the Taycan instead?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how we decided on the Taycan.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, while it would be fantastic if charging was available onboard the ferry, unfortunately, it isn&#8217;t yet. Hopefully, this will improve in the future.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"EVs_Are_Directed_to_Separate_Lanes_at_Ferry_Boarding\"><\/span>EVs Are Directed to Separate Lanes at Ferry Boarding<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We took the Shin Nihonkai Ferry from Maizuru to Otaru. When reserving, I registered the Taycan as an electric vehicle. Then, on departure day, we received a phone call:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Is your Taycan fully electric or a hybrid?<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We answered fully electric, and they instructed us:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Please use a separate lane from regular cars when boarding. When you arrive at the port, inform the staff that you are driving an electric vehicle.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Following their instructions, we informed staff at Maizuru port, and sure enough, our Taycan waited in a different area than regular passenger cars (we were the only EV on both outbound and return trips). On this ferry, EVs board last but are the first vehicles to disembark.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-45233\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_4535-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan on the ferry\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This boarding order made getting on and off surprisingly smooth, which was a nice perk.<\/p>\n<p>Still, seeing the lone Taycan parked in a big, quiet spot inside the ferry made me wonder, &#8220;<strong>Are electric cars really regarded with that much caution? Do people think they might explode or something?<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the bright side, not having anyone park right next to you (sometimes called being a \u201ctonar\u0101,\u201d or parking too closely) means no worrying about door dings\u2014a pleasant bonus! (Laughs.)<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ferry_Travel_Time_and_Cost_Breakdown\"><\/span>Ferry Travel Time and Cost Breakdown<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Our ferry left Maizuru port at around 11:50 PM and arrived at Otaru port the next day around 8:30 PM\u2014about a 22-hour overnight journey.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered, &#8220;<strong>Why such a late-night departure?<\/strong>&#8221; It turns out the ferry\u2019s primary purpose is freight transport, mainly trucks. Our sailing accommodated about 30 passenger cars but nearly 150 trucks.<\/p>\n<p>The schedule prioritizes truck logistics, which explains the late-night departure.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding accommodations, I preferred to have a private bath to relax. For our family of five, this meant booking two rooms.<\/p>\n<p>As for costs: our Taycan fits in the &#8220;under 5 meters&#8221; vehicle category. Including the car and two rooms, the one-way trip cost about <strong>150,000 yen (roughly $1,100 USD), totaling around 300,000 yen ($2,200 USD) for a round trip.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s quite pricey! Honestly, booking early bird airline tickets would have been cheaper, faster, and easier.<\/p>\n<p>However, the ferry was comfortable and clean, with the benefit of sleeping in beds. There was even a treadmill onboard.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the ferry offers little in the way of onboard entertainment, so the kids did get a bit bored.<\/p>\n<p>The toughest challenge was the communication environment. Once we got far offshore, Wi-Fi was unreliable. Mobile data could be purchased, but computer internet access was poor, making it impossible to work remotely (which is understandable).<\/p>\n<p>For about 13\u201314 hours each day on the ferry, we mostly passed time playing games. I played Resident Evil: Revelations three times on my Nintendo Switch, both ways.<\/p>\n<p>By now, I\u2019ve become quite accustomed to this routine. (Laughs.)<\/p>\n<p>Despite the challenges, the sunsets and the ocean views were stunning. Overall, it was a comfortable journey.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-45235\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_4500-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Shin Nihonkai Ferry\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Would_We_Choose_the_Ferry_Again_for_Hokkaido\"><\/span>Would We Choose the Ferry Again for Hokkaido?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Taking an electric vehicle on a ferry might sound complicated, but in practice, it was hassle-free and perfectly normal.<\/p>\n<p>The freedom and joy of driving your own car across the vast landscapes of Hokkaido is unmatched. (Although the roads being so straight made me think Tesla\u2019s Full Self Driving would also come in handy! Laughs.)<\/p>\n<p>I plan to write more about this trip, including a detailed <strong>charging experience<\/strong> post.
