So this time, I want to share my firsthand impressions after crossing Hokkaido both east-west and north-south in an EV.<\/p>\n<p>To cut to the chase, there were absolutely no issues\u2014way better than I imagined. Back then, there were fewer charging stations, so we carefully researched and planned where to charge in advance.<\/p>\n<p>Being a bit of a worrier, I used to panic whenever the charge dropped below 50%, thinking, <strong>&#8220;I need to charge right now!&#8221;<\/strong> But I learned that even with just a few percent left, you can still keep driving comfortably. Eventually, I relaxed to <strong>&#8220;Charging once it drops below 10% should be fine.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I also took a quick look at <a href=\"https:\/\/ev.gogo.gs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GoGoEV<\/a>, Japan\u2019s largest EV and plug-in hybrid charging station sharing site, which showed that Hokkaido has a surprisingly large number of charging points.<\/p>\n<p>So I figured, this time on our Hokkaido trip, there was no need to meticulously pre-check charging spots.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Many_Times_Did_We_Charge_Over_1200km\"><\/span>How Many Times Did We Charge Over 1,200km?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>During the entire roughly 1,200 km journey, we stopped to charge at the following stations:<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbBMW CHAdeMO: 1 time<br \/>\n\u30fbPCA: 3 times<br \/>\n\u30fbHighway PA CHAdeMO: 2 times<br \/>\n\u30fbFLASH: 1 time  <\/p>\n<p>*Note: PCA is a charging network combining 90kW to 150kW CHAdeMO fast chargers for Audi, Volkswagen, and Porsche EV owners, now also available to Lexus owners. It recently switched from a time-based billing system to a pay-per-kWh pricing.*<\/p>\n<p>You might think, <strong>&#8220;Charging this often sounds inconvenient compared to refueling a gas car.&#8221;<\/strong> But we never fully charged every time.<\/p>\n<p>Most charges coincided with bathroom breaks or grabbing a snack at highway rest areas, which mainly had 50kW chargers. Other times, we topped up for just 30 minutes while my husband waited in the car as I shopped for breakfast near a Volkswagen dealership.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-45275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_4642-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While gas cars encourage \u201calways fill the tank,\u201d EVs shift the mindset to <strong>&#8220;recovering a few tens of percent is enough.&#8221;<\/strong> The EV travel style becomes \u201ctopping up a bit as you go,\u201d such as charging in between legs when <strong>&#8220;you know you\u2019ll cover a long distance tomorrow.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Convenient_PCA_and_the_Surprisingly_Great_%E2%80%9CFLASH%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Convenient PCA and the Surprisingly Great &#8220;FLASH&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When we really needed a solid charge, PCA (Porsche Charging Service) was very reliable. Although I don\u2019t usually subscribe to it, I signed up just for this Hokkaido trip. PCA chargers are typically installed at Porsche Center group dealerships and have the major advantage of not being restricted by the common \u201c30-minute charging limit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Sapporo, while I met with friends, my family comfortably charged the Taycan at the Porsche Center and enjoyed the amenities\u2014a huge plus.<\/p>\n<p>On the way to our hotel in Sapporo via Otaru, I had my first experience with a <a href=\"https:\/\/ev-charger.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FLASH<\/a> charger. FLASH offers 240kW output and supports both CHAdeMO and NACS connectors. <\/p>\n<p>Its best feature? You don\u2019t need to register or install an app beforehand. Simply use a credit card or QR code payment on the spot for a rapid charge\u2014which turned out to be incredibly convenient.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-45274\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_4546-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan FLASH\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-45279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_4542-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"FLASH\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Charging was fast, operation was simple, and the cost was low (44 yen\/kWh).<\/p>\n<p>For the Taycan, the output stayed around 135kW continuously. Fast, easy, and affordable\u2014I honestly wish FLASH chargers would spread to many more locations!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-45281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_4537-957x1280.jpg\" alt=\"FLASH\" width=\"957\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion_No_Need_to_Worry_About_EV_Travel_in_Hokkaido\"><\/span>Conclusion: No Need to Worry About EV Travel in Hokkaido<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Interestingly, we never had a single CHAdeMO error during this trip. From past experience, CHAdeMO chargers often threw errors two out of three times, which was frustrating, but not this time.<\/p>\n<p>My husband\u2019s tip? <strong>&#8220;Make sure to firmly click the connector in all the way.&#8221;<\/strong> (Though those cables sure remain heavy to handle\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>One surprising observation was how rare EVs were in Hokkaido. We didn\u2019t see other Teslas or Taycans around. Tesla\u2019s limited Supercharger network in Hokkaido probably plays a part. It seems gasoline cars still dominate the region.<\/p>\n<p>However, driving the highways toward Obihiro and Kushiro, I noticed <strong>gas stations are actually spaced far apart,<\/strong> so missing a refueling opportunity could be just as concerning for gas cars.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Our Taycan\u2019s full charge range is about 390 km, which was more than sufficient for a Hokkaido trip.<\/p>\n<p>For anyone worried that <strong>an EV trip in Hokkaido sounds too challenging,<\/strong> I want to assure you there\u2019s really nothing to fear.<\/p>\n<p>The driving experience is enjoyable, and charging infrastructure is steadily improving.<\/p>\n<p>I highly recommend taking your EV for a drive through Hokkaido!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Continuing from last time, here are my impressions of traveling through Hokkaido in a Taycan.
