Today, I\u2019d like to share what they feel like after taking the car out for a drive.<\/p>\n<p>The Panamera originally came with <strong>Pirelli P ZEROs<\/strong>\u2014Porsche-approved tires fitted when we bought the car new. After a recent flat, we decided to replace all four with <strong>Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Acoustic<\/strong> tires.<\/p>\n<div id=\"rinkerid15210\" class=\"yyi-rinker-contents   yyi-rinker-postid-15210 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>We chose Michelin because my husband had been so impressed with the brand after switching the Boxster\u2019s tires from Goodyear to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. At the time, he said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">The difference after switching to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is incredible! Maybe I\u2019m exaggerating, but the ride feels almost as smooth as the Panamera now. The handling is even more precise than before, and it feels more stable in a straight line!<\/p>\n<p>He said then that if we ever needed to replace the Panamera\u2019s tires, he\u2019d definitely choose Michelin.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"jp1fPxEJlm\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/tire-michelin-pilotsports-4s\/\">\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7 \u30dc\u30af\u30b9\u30bf\u30fcGTS\u306e\u30bf\u30a4\u30e4\u4ea4\u63db\u2212\u30df\u30b7\u30e5\u30e9\u30f3\u30d1\u30a4\u30ed\u30c3\u30c8\u30b9\u30dd\u30fc\u30c44S\u306b\u66ff\u3048\u3066\u307f\u305f\u611f\u60f3<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201c\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7 \u30dc\u30af\u30b9\u30bf\u30fcGTS\u306e\u30bf\u30a4\u30e4\u4ea4\u63db\u2212\u30df\u30b7\u30e5\u30e9\u30f3\u30d1\u30a4\u30ed\u30c3\u30c8\u30b9\u30dd\u30fc\u30c44S\u306b\u66ff\u3048\u3066\u307f\u305f\u611f\u60f3\u201d \u2014 \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30ba\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/tire-michelin-pilotsports-4s\/embed\/#?secret=iLjVZJzDlU#?secret=jp1fPxEJlm\" data-secret=\"jp1fPxEJlm\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>For the Panamera, however, the tire is the <strong>Michelin Pilot Sport 4<\/strong>\u2014without the \u201cS\u201d found on the Pilot Sport 4S. And the Porsche-approved version in the size we needed has \u201cAcoustic\u201d in its name: <strong>Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Acoustic N0<\/strong>. The \u201cAcoustic\u201d designation means sound-absorbing foam is attached to the inside of the tire.<\/p>\n<p>When my husband said he wanted to put Michelin Pilot Sport 4s on all four wheels, I asked, \u201c<strong>Only the front right tire got a puncture. Wouldn\u2019t it be fine to replace just that one?<\/strong>\u201d He replied:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">No way. <strong>That would leave the tires mismatched from side to side.<\/strong> And if I only changed the front tires, I\u2019d have different brands on the front and rear. That would drive me crazy\u2014I just couldn\u2019t live with it. If we\u2019re changing them, we have to change all four.<\/p>\n<p>So he ordered a full set online from Rakuten, and we ended up replacing all four tires (laughs). I also looked into the Pilot Sport 4 Acoustic, and it seems to offer:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u30fbExcellent wet- and dry-weather performance<br \/>\n\u30fbPrecise control and responsive handling<br \/>\n\u30fbA refined, premium design<br \/>\n\u30fbAcoustic Technology<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (sound-absorbing foam inside the tire helps reduce noise in the cabin)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15325\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15325\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15325\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/59409928644__5DDF44E4-6E28-4653-85E5-2E9FEE03CC83-1-800x739.jpeg\" alt=\"Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Acoustic\" width=\"800\" height=\"739\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15325\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Foam is attached to the inside of the tire.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15298\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5506-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Our Impressions of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4<\/h3>\n<p>After the tire change, my husband told me, \u201cSince we\u2019ve gone to the trouble of changing the tires, why don\u2019t you take the Panamera for a spin?\u201d So the other day, I drove it for the first time in about two weeks. My first impression was that it felt <strong>livelier and even smoother over the road<\/strong>, though I didn\u2019t notice a huge difference compared with the Pirellis it had been wearing.<\/p>\n<p>The Pirellis must have been good tires, too.<\/p>\n<p>More than anything, I was struck by how much I admired the Panamera itself after being away from it for a while. Its solid, substantial feel, smooth ride, and powerful acceleration when merging onto the highway all reminded me just how wonderful this car is.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_9053-800x533.jpeg\" alt=\"Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Acoustic\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My husband\u2019s first impressions of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 were:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">It feels livelier. <strong>It\u2019s like swapping a pair of heavy sneakers for a slightly lighter pair.<\/strong> The road noise also seems noticeably quieter. As for ride comfort, though, I haven\u2019t noticed as big a difference from the Pirellis as I did when I changed the Boxster from Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2s to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/panamera-michelin-ps4\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 My husband\u2019s impressions after taking the tires to Royu for a scrub-in drive\u2026!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Testing the PS4 on Royu Driveway<\/h3>\n<p>To give the tires a proper review, my husband made a special early-morning trip to Royu Driveway before work. He scrubbed them in\u2014essentially giving the new tires a gentle break-in\u2014and then put them through their paces. Here are his impressions (laughs).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_9067-800x533.jpeg\" alt=\"Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Acoustic\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Tire Pressure<\/h4>\n<p>He set the pressures to the <strong>standard pressure<\/strong> specified for the Panamera Turbo\u2019s 21-inch summer tires. At that pressure, the ride felt a little bouncier than it had on the Pirellis\u2014as if the tires were slightly overinflated. That may partly be because the Michelins feel lighter. He thinks the <strong>Comfort pressure<\/strong> setting would suit them better, or, if using the standard pressure as a starting point, dropping it by around 0.2\u20130.3 bar might be just right.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">How They Compare with the Pirellis<\/h4>\n<p>The most obvious difference from the Pirellis is the Michelins\u2019 <strong>much sharper initial response<\/strong>. Even allowing for the fact that the Pirelli tread had worn down considerably, the difference was clear. The Pirellis certainly hadn\u2019t responded this way when they were new. With the Michelins, <strong>the front end turns in as soon as you move the steering wheel, making corners a real pleasure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Grip<\/h4>\n<p>The grip is impressive, as you\u2019d expect. My husband was amazed when he drove the Boxster on Pilot Sport 4S tires at Fuji Speedway, and he thinks <strong>the Pilot Sport 4 family offers excellent grip<\/strong>. For outright grip alone, Japanese performance tires may have the edge, but <strong>the way these tires combine grip with low noise and a comfortable ride is remarkable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the Panamera Turbo\u2019s substantial body, the Pirellis would scrub slightly through low-speed corners generating around 1.1 G of lateral force, and the PSM would intervene a little. <strong>On the Michelins, the car simply holds its line, with no hint of wheelspin even when he applies plenty of torque on corner exit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The car feels reassuring through corners, tracking cleanly with no sense of sliding. It feels as though the Panamera\u2019s chassis is finally getting to show what it can do.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">The Panamera Really Is a Great Car<\/h3>\n<p>To wrap up, my husband said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">I gave the Panamera a good run for the first time in a while, and <strong>it\u2019s such a great car<\/strong> (laughs). The V8 is much smoother than it was when the car was new. I didn\u2019t expect it to rev so easily all the way to redline\u2014and it felt like it had plenty left. <strong>I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve even begun to tap the engine\u2019s potential.<\/strong> I\u2019m sure it still has a lot more to give.<br \/>\nI wonder if this engine gets even more power in the later 971 Panamera or in other Volkswagen Group models.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_9105-800x533.jpeg\" alt=\"Panamera Turbo\u2019s rear spoiler\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s amazing.
