Porsche calls these cars\u2014more than 300,000 in total\u2014<strong>\u201cfuture classics.\u201d<\/strong> There are two versions: one for the 997.2 and 987.2, and another for the 991.1 and 981. Installation by a Porsche Center is recommended.<\/p>\n<p>Even the oldest, a 2009 model, is only 17 years old. But in the world of infotainment, 17 years is almost an eternity. <strong>The driving experience is still first-rate, but the center of the dashboard has been left behind.<\/strong> To me, that\u2019s what makes this news significant: Porsche itself is stepping in to bring these cars up to date.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_Than_Just_Wireless_CarPlay_Whats_New_in_PCCM_Plus\"><\/span>More Than Just Wireless CarPlay: What\u2019s New in PCCM Plus<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The headline features are wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.<\/p>\n<p>The system connects via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and Motor1 reports that wired USB connectivity is also retained. It features a high-resolution 7-inch touchscreen. Cars equipped with a multifunction steering wheel can also be controlled from the wheel. Navigation directions and track titles can appear in the instrument cluster, so <strong>this isn\u2019t an aftermarket add-on\u2014it\u2019s designed to integrate with the car\u2019s electronic systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45481-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45481-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-45481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/pccm-plus-menu-1280x740.jpg\" alt=\"PCCM Plus menu\" width=\"1280\" height=\"740\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45481-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Porsche Newsroom<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What interests me most goes beyond smartphone connectivity. The trip screen displays oil temperature and pressure, and the system can show speed limits using map data. In the Boxster and Cayman, parking sensors that previously provided audio alerts only now also show distance on screen. Other features include Scenic Roads navigation for finding scenic routes, 4G connectivity, and over-the-air map updates. Keep in mind, though, that <strong>available features vary by model, specification, and internet connectivity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Since_the_Day_I_Installed_a_1-DIN_PCCM_in_My_964\"><\/span>Since the Day I Installed a 1-DIN PCCM in My 964<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I installed a factory retrofit navigation system back in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>It was a 1-DIN PCCM made for air-cooled 911s, fitted to our 964 C2. The system wasn\u2019t available in Japan at the time, so I imported it from the U.S. The version without maps cost $1,190, or about \u00a5150,000 including shipping and duties. I wrote about it in detail here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/1din-navi-964\/\">Installing PCCM in a Classic Porsche: A Navigation System That Brings Apple CarPlay to an Air-Cooled Porsche.<\/a> I still remember how naturally even the dials\u2019 finish blended with the 964\u2019s interior.<\/p>\n<p>With CarPlay, <strong>the air-cooled 964 suddenly felt like a modern car.<\/strong> The sound quality also improved noticeably, with more depth in the midrange. On the other hand, the 1-DIN screen is small, making street names at complex intersections hard to read at a glance. The unit didn\u2019t support Japanese fonts, and track titles sometimes appeared garbled over Bluetooth. Against that experience, the new system\u2014with its 7-inch screen and wireless connectivity\u2014is a clear step forward.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_9872_Spyder_Owners_Perspective\"><\/span>A 987.2 Spyder Owner\u2019s Perspective<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Our 987 Boxster Spyder is exactly the kind of 987.2 this system is made for.<\/p>\n<p>Porsche\u2019s retrofit options have gradually expanded to newer models, from the 1-DIN unit for air-cooled cars to the 2-DIN version for the 996 and 986. Now it\u2019s finally the turn of the car I drive today. What I love about the Spyder is the flat-six\u2019s crisp sound and the way its light body changes direction so readily. I wouldn\u2019t sell it just because its navigation system feels dated, but <strong>not having to pull out my phone and plug in a cable<\/strong> would make it that much easier to head out for a drive.<\/p>\n<p>Being able to check oil temperature and pressure is another welcome feature for anyone planning to keep their car for the long haul. It lets you monitor an aging engine\u2019s condition with actual numbers. The PCCM for the 964 was initially said to have no plans for a Japanese release, before a Japan-market version eventually appeared. Before buying, be sure to check with your dealer about <strong>Japanese map data, Japanese-language display support, and compatibility with Japan\u2019s FM frequency bands.<\/strong> DAB is supported in Europe, while HD Radio is available only in North America.<\/p>\n<p>The new-generation PCCM Plus is aimed at owners who want to keep driving these model-year cars as part of everyday life. If you want wireless CarPlay without compromising the factory look, it could be a compelling option. On the other hand, if preserving the car exactly as it was matters more to you, there may be no need to change anything.
