That\u2019s Porsche\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>On October 7, Porsche AG held its Capital Markets Day at the Weissach Development Center and unveiled a new strategy, \u201cSportwagenschmiede \u201935,\u201d looking ahead to 2035. According to the official release, the expansion of its product lineup will <strong>begin with the all-electric 718 Boxster and Cayman<\/strong>. The 718 was described as \u201call-electric,\u201d with no mention of a gasoline-powered version.<\/p>\n<p>InsideEVs reported that the announcement put an end not only to the rumors, but also to Porsche\u2019s own earlier statements. The new models are set to debut in 2027, with sales expected to be supported by the first full year of production in 2028. Porsche also outlined plans to cut around 20% of its derivatives and eliminate 9,000 jobs. CEO Michael Leiters has also said, \u201cThe 911 will never be electric.\u201d In other words, <strong>the 911 stays combustion-powered, while the 718 goes all-in on electric<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Did_the_Plan_to_Keep_Gasoline_Power_for_Higher-End_718_Models_Disappear\"><\/span>Why Did the Plan to Keep Gasoline Power for Higher-End 718 Models Disappear?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Things looked different just a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Porsche first announced plans to electrify the 718 in 2022. The project faced repeated delays, and production of the current gasoline-powered 718 ended in October 2025. In a product-strategy overhaul announced on September 19, 2025, under then-CEO Oliver Blume, an investor presentation referred to <strong>\u201ccombustion-engine derivatives at the top end of the new 718 range.\u201d<\/strong> International media interpreted this to mean that high-performance models such as the Spyder RS and GT4 RS would continue with gasoline engines.<\/p>\n<p>Now, that plan has disappeared. Porsche communications chief Matthias Rauter told Motor1 that a return of the gasoline-powered 718 had never been formally approved. Whatever the reason, the gasoline Boxster and Cayman aren\u2019t coming back. So far, Porsche hasn\u2019t offered a clear explanation. In February 2026, Bloomberg reported that CEO Michael Leiters was even considering canceling the electric 718 itself because of development delays and rising costs. This is only speculation, but perhaps Porsche couldn\u2019t afford to pursue both electric and gasoline versions.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Battery_Goes_Where_the_Engine_Was_Car_and_Drivers_Ride_in_the_Prototype\"><\/span>The Battery Goes Where the Engine Was: Car and Driver\u2019s Ride in the Prototype<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_45558-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45558-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-45558\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/body-718-ev-prototype-side-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 718 Boxster EV prototype, side view\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45558-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Porsche\uff08via Car and Driver\uff09<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So what will the electric 718 be like?<\/p>\n<p>Car and Driver reporter Caleb Miller rode in a prototype at Weissach\u2019s test track and wrote that it felt \u201csurprisingly familiar.\u201d Rather than placing the battery under the floor, Porsche has mounted it <strong>just behind the seats, where the engine sits in a gasoline-powered 718<\/strong>, and integrated it into the body structure. Porsche calls this layout \u201cE-Core,\u201d saying it preserves the mid-engine character. The rear axle carries 59.8% of the weight in a gasoline Boxster and 55.2% in the 718 EV.<\/p>\n<p>With no battery under the floor, the seating position stays low. Miller noted that both the low driving position and the car\u2019s overall proportions felt remarkably similar to those of a gasoline Boxster. The rear-wheel-drive prototype turned neatly into corners and stayed flat through them. It will likely be heavier, but he noticed no obvious negative effect on handling, and the suspension remained relatively supple over curbs. The car will also feature an 800-volt system and E-Shift, but Porsche hasn\u2019t announced its output, range, or price.<\/p>\n<p>This is the same \u201ccore\u201d layout I wrote about in my December 2024 article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/%e3%83%9d%e3%83%ab%e3%82%b7%e3%82%a7-%e6%ac%a1%e6%9c%9f718ev%ef%bc%88%e9%9b%bb%e6%b0%97%e8%87%aa%e5%8b%95%e8%bb%8a%e7%89%88%ef%bc%89%e3%81%ab%e3%81%a4%e3%81%84%e3%81%a6%e3%81%ae%e9%96%8b%e7%99%ba\/\">The Latest on Development of the Next-Generation 718 EV<\/a>,\u201d based on comments from then-head of R&#038;D Steiner. <strong>Both the numbers and the layout suggest Porsche is trying to preserve what makes a 718 feel like a 718.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Even_If_Porsche_Rebuilt_It_with_a_Gas_Engine_It_Wouldnt_Be_the_Same_718\"><\/span>Even If Porsche Rebuilt It with a Gas Engine, It Wouldn\u2019t Be the Same 718<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To be honest, I now support Porsche\u2019s decision to make the 718 electric-only.<\/p>\n<p>With tough new environmental and noise regulations such as Euro 7 coming into effect, any new gasoline engine would likely have to be quiet and restrained. I also expect its engine mapping to feel unnatural at low speeds in the name of fuel economy. <strong>If that\u2019s the choice, I\u2019d rather see Porsche build an EV with far greater performance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What makes a mid-engine car special: the weight distribution, or the sound and lightness of the engine? E-Core appears to preserve the numbers\u2014the 55.2% rear-axle weight distribution and low seating position. As I see it, the sound won\u2019t return with a new gasoline engine built to meet regulations, either. <strong>Either way, a new gasoline-powered 718 wouldn\u2019t bring that sound back.<\/strong> So why not choose the EV, with its performance advantage?<\/p>\n<p>In my February 2025 article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/%e3%83%9d%e3%83%ab%e3%82%b7%e3%82%a7718%e3%82%b1%e3%82%a4%e3%83%9e%e3%83%b3ev%ef%bc%9a2026%e5%b9%b4%e7%99%bb%e5%a0%b4%e4%ba%88%e5%ae%9a%e3%81%ae%e9%9b%bb%e5%8b%95%e3%82%b9%e3%83%9d%e3%83%bc%e3%83%84\/\">Porsche 718 Cayman EV: The Latest on the Electric Sports Car Expected in 2026<\/a>,\u201d I wrote, \u201cIf the Taycan can deliver that much performance and driving pleasure, a more compact 718 EV should be seriously fun to drive.\u201d My prediction about its launch timing was off, but having experienced the agility of the Taycan Turbo GT hasn\u2019t changed my expectations.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Spyder_RS_Wont_Be_My_Last_Id_Keep_the_981_GTS_and_987_Spyder\"><\/span>The Spyder RS Won\u2019t Be My Last: I\u2019d Keep the 981 GTS and 987 Spyder<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_45560-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45560-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-45560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/718-spyder-rs-rear-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 718 Spyder RS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45560-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our 718 Spyder RS<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I won\u2019t be parting with my 718 Spyder RS anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>With its GT3 engine and PCCB brakes, this open-top sports car could be called the pinnacle of the gasoline-powered 718 range. It\u2019s one of my favorite cars and an exceptional machine. Even so, <strong>I don\u2019t think it will be the one I keep until the end<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The gasoline Boxster and Cayman models I\u2019d most want to hold on to are the <strong>irresistibly engaging 981 Boxster GTS and 987 Boxster Spyder<\/strong>. If what you want is the sound of a gasoline engine, though, it may be worth experiencing a gasoline-powered 718 while you still can.
