Japanese-market 987 Spyders came with an outdated Clarion unit, and by today\u2019s standards, it was <strong>barely usable<\/strong>. I had no hesitation about replacing it.<\/p>\n<p>My first thought was Porsche\u2019s own PCCM. There\u2019s a version for the 987, too, as I covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/pccm2\/\">Porsche\u2019s New-Generation PCCM Plus Arrives<\/a>. But the Spyder came standard without a stereo, and even the air conditioning and PCM were optional on this stripped-back car. A luxurious PCCM just didn\u2019t feel like the right fit. <strong>A simple display audio system suits the Spyder better<\/strong>. That\u2019s why I chose the KENWOOD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenwood.com\/jp\/car\/receivers\/products\/dmx5523s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DMX5523S<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_I_Chose_KENWOOD_Over_the_Pioneer_SZ700_and_SZ500\"><\/span>Why I Chose KENWOOD Over the Pioneer SZ700 and SZ500<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Pioneer was another option. I\u2019d installed the Carrozzeria DMH-SZ700 in both my 981 Boxster GTS and the 991 Carrera 4 GTS I\u2019ve since sold. I wrote about that setup in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/dmh-sz700\/\">Replacing a Boxster\u2019s Factory Navigation with a Display Audio System: DMH-SZ700 Review<\/a>, and I was happy with it. This time, though, I wanted something different and newer.<\/p>\n<p>So I looked at the DMH-SZ500, a newer model than the SZ700. It supports wireless CarPlay, but the display gave me pause. The SZ500 has a VGA resolution of 800 \u00d7 480, which felt a little underwhelming. By comparison, the DMX5523S has a WSVGA display at 1024 \u00d7 600, so <strong>KENWOOD wins on resolution<\/strong>. I also liked the idea of trying a KENWOOD unit for a change.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wireless_CarPlay_and_a_Weight_Under_1_kg_Sealed_the_Deal\"><\/span>Wireless CarPlay and a Weight Under 1 kg Sealed the Deal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Two things clinched it for me: wireless Apple CarPlay and the unit\u2019s weight. The DMX5523S weighs just 0.99 kg, which means it <strong>comes in under 1 kg<\/strong>. Pioneer\u2019s unit is also light, at around 0.9 kg, so there\u2019s little between them. A PCCM, on the other hand, would likely weigh more.<\/p>\n<p>The factory Clarion unit I removed weighed around 3.4\u20133.5 kg, so the swap shaved roughly 2.4\u20132.5 kg off the car. That matters in a Spyder, where saving weight is part of the whole point. <strong>Its light weight was another reason I decided to make the change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46155-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46155-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-46155\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/kenwood-987-spyder-dash-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"987 Spyder dashboard with the KENWOOD DMX5523S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46155-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The DMX5523S, viewed over the steering wheel.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fast_Smooth_Performance_A_Big_Step_Up_from_the_SZ700\"><\/span>Fast, Smooth Performance: A Big Step Up from the SZ700<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The first thing I noticed after installation was how quick and responsive it felt. The DMH-SZ700 wasn\u2019t frustrating to use, but it wasn\u2019t especially smooth or fast, either. The DMX5523S feels noticeably snappier, and the controls are well laid out. The SZ700\u2019s buttons were on the left and awkward to press; on the KENWOOD, the volume and other buttons run along the bottom of the screen, making them <strong>easy to reach and responsive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46154-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46154-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-46154\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/kenwood-987-carplay-home-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Apple CarPlay home screen on the KENWOOD DMX5523S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46154-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The wireless Apple CarPlay home screen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The display is bright and looks good even from an angle, with pleasing resolution and color. CarPlay responds well, and the wireless connection comes up quickly, so there\u2019s no need to plug in a cable before setting off. <strong>With this kind of responsiveness over a wireless connection, I have no complaints<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46156-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46156-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-46156\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/kenwood-987-carplay-closeup-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Apple CarPlay home screen on the DMX5523S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46156-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CarPlay connected wirelessly, with a quick response<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Only_Annoyance_A_Warning_Message_at_Startup\"><\/span>The Only Annoyance: A Warning Message at Startup<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I found just one thing irritating. The unit takes a little while to start up, and every time it does, a warning appears: \u201cFor your safety, do not operate this system while driving. Always obey actual traffic regulations when driving.\u201d It gets old.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46158-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46158-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-46158\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/kenwood-987-boot-warning-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Warning screen displayed when the DMX5523S starts up\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46158-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The warning that appears at every startup. I\u2019ve checked \u201cAutomatically remove this message after 10 seconds.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s <strong>the sort of warning you often see on products from Japanese manufacturers<\/strong>. You don\u2019t come across this kind of message as often on overseas models. I wish manufacturers would make things easier for users: once you\u2019ve agreed, the warning shouldn\u2019t appear again. At least there\u2019s a checkbox that says, \u201cAutomatically remove this message after 10 seconds.\u201d I\u2019ve enabled it so the warning clears on its own.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Installed_by_BESPOKE_Along_with_a_New_ETC_Unit_and_Backup_Camera\"><\/span>Installed by BESPOKE, Along with a New ETC Unit and Backup Camera<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I had the work done by <a href=\"https:\/\/bespoke-ag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BESPOKE<\/a> in Osaka, the same shop I used for my 981 and 991. They specialize in comprehensive customization and audio for imported cars. The factory amplifier was bypassed, with the new unit\u2019s built-in amplifier powering the speakers. The Spyder\u2019s speakers weren\u2019t great to begin with, though, so <strong>the sound quality didn\u2019t change much<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I also replaced the ETC unit, since the Clarion-specific model wouldn\u2019t work with the new head unit\u2014just as with my 981 and 991. The backup camera was replaced, too. The 987\u2019s factory camera sat off-center and had poor image quality, so I had a modern, compact camera installed in the middle. The old opening has been neatly sealed from the inside, and <strong>I\u2019m very happy with the clean finish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46153-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46153-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-46153\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/kenwood-987-backup-camera-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Backup camera moved to the center of the 987 Spyder\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46153-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new backup camera mounted in the center. The old camera opening, now sealed from the inside, is on the right.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Light, simple, and modern\u2014that\u2019s what I wanted.
