Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said the platform\u2014the car\u2019s underlying structure\u2014could accommodate petrol, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, but added: \u201cThere won&#8217;t be a BEV on that platform: there is no demand.\u201d Porsche has not announced when the production model will arrive.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoexpress.co.uk\/porsche\/370719\/electric-cars-dont-excite-kids-porsche-911-loud-engine-definitely-does\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Auto Express column<\/a> reports that Porsche expected EVs to account for 80% of its sales by 2030 in 2022, but its latest forecast is 33%. <strong>Blume has also reportedly said that the 911 will never be electrified.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lamborghini_Pagani_and_Rimac_Reach_the_Same_Conclusion\"><\/span>Lamborghini, Pagani, and Rimac Reach the Same Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Porsche isn\u2019t the only automaker to come to this conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Lamborghini changed plans for the Lanzador, originally intended to be its first EV, and will launch it as a plug-in hybrid instead. CEO Stephan Winkelmann has said customer acceptance of EVs is \u201cclose to zero.\u201d Pagani abandoned an electric version of the Utopia after \u201cnobody showed any interest.\u201d Rimac\u2019s electric Nevera hypercar, initially planned for a run of 150, will end production after 71 cars, including the Nevera R.<\/p>\n<p>What these three stories have in common is that <strong>buyers didn\u2019t step forward<\/strong>. From January to September this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/porsche-911-growth-sales-method\/\">the 911 was the only Porsche to grow its sales<\/a>. Sales of the 911 rose 12%, while the Taycan fell 31%. But the 911\u2019s growth also reflects Porsche\u2019s push to sell more high-end models and its decision to loosen production constraints. Sales figures alone can\u2019t tell us what buyers really prefer.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Appeal_of_an_EV_Is_Still_Very_Real\"><\/span>The Appeal of an EV Is Still Very Real<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_43611-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43611-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-43611\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC05755-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-43611-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean electric sports cars are dull.<\/p>\n<p>Our Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package rockets from 0 to 100 km\/h (62 mph) in 2.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 305 km\/h (190 mph). As I wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/tubogt-911-2\/\">The Taycan Turbo GT Experience: Part Two<\/a>, it delivers whatever you need from its 1,000 horsepower almost instantly. There\u2019s no waiting for revs to build; the power is there across the entire range. It brings the kind of exhilaration you\u2019d expect on a racetrack right into everyday driving. And its electric soundtrack is every bit as satisfying as the one in our 981.<\/p>\n<p>The low center of gravity also feels like an advantage a gasoline-powered car simply can\u2019t overcome. Through Suzuka\u2019s final chicane, the Taycan feels sharper and more composed than a Boxster or 911. <strong>In outright speed and handling, EVs have the edge in plenty of situations.<\/strong> And as I noted in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/cayenne-electric-first-drive\/\">first-drive impressions of the entry-level Cayenne EV<\/a>, the electric Cayenne was one of the most impressive new Porsches I\u2019ve driven.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CTheres_No_Demand%E2%80%9D_May_Be_Right%E2%80%94but_I_Still_Want_to_See_What_Comes_Next\"><\/span>\u201cThere\u2019s No Demand\u201d May Be Right\u2014but I Still Want to See What Comes Next<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_45560-2\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45560-2\" class=\"size-large wp-image-45560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/718-spyder-rs-rear-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"718 Spyder RS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45560-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our 718 Spyder RS<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I think the CEO may be right that there\u2019s no demand.<\/p>\n<p>There are two reasons. First, while young people are often said to be open-minded about EVs, buyers of ultra-luxury cars tend to be older. Many of them remain wary of electric vehicles. They also know the pleasures of traditional engine-powered cars\u2014and actively seek them out. Second, buyers may believe that EVs become outdated faster than combustion-engine cars, as high-performance batteries, motors, powertrains, and in-car infotainment systems are continually updated. That, too, could help explain why this group isn\u2019t clamoring for an electric supercar.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, my view hasn\u2019t changed since I wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/%e3%82%bf%e3%82%a4%e3%82%ab%e3%83%b3%e3%82%bf%e3%83%bc%e3%83%9cgt%e3%81%8c%e5%a4%89%e3%81%88%e3%81%a6%e3%81%97%e3%81%be%e3%81%a3%e3%81%9f%e7%a7%81%e3%81%ae%e3%82%af%e3%83%ab%e3%83%9e%e3%81%b8%e3%81%ae\/\">how the Taycan Turbo GT changed my perspective on cars<\/a>. I want Porsche to make the shift to EVs sooner and build ultimate models like a super 911 or super 718. In theory, there\u2019s a way to preserve what\u2019s special about both EVs and combustion engines. But if future emissions rules leave us with only quiet, heavily controlled engines, it\u2019s hard to feel optimistic about the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO may be right. But is that enough? <strong>This is no longer an era in which we can entrust the future to the visceral appeal of the combustion engine.<\/strong> I\u2019d love to see a world of genuinely fun-to-drive, emotionally stirring engine-powered Porsches, like the 981 and older models from before the 991.
