Test Drive] Test the 981 Boxster GTS (PDK) sports chassis, PTV

My husband was given the opportunity to test drive a 981 Boxster GTS (PDK) by a fellow car enthusiast, and he wrote a report on it. Please take a look if you like.

Now rare and at a premium price 981 Boxster GTS

Recently, they are so popular that as soon as they appear on the used car market, they sell out quickly. The 981 Boxster GTS is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. It is surprising that the price is still close to the price of a new car, even though it has been more than five years since its introduction.

The unit we test-drove was recently purchased used. The unit was not listed on a used car information website. The individual was only notified to those who had asked the dealer to look for him or her in advance, and because there were so many people who wanted to purchase the unit, a lottery was held and the buyers were decided by lot drawing.

Well, it is amazingly popular to draw lots for used cars.

Recently, the "I think the price has gone up because of the 981 GTS on this blog. However, I think this is more due to the fact that more and more people have come to understand the excellence of this 981 model.

By the way, I should mention that no matter how much the used car market rises in price, I do not intend to sell, so there will be no profit for me at all.

981 Boxster GTS loaded with options

The unit we tested was a 2016 981 Boxster GTS (PDK) with the following options.

  • right hand drive (of cars, etc.)
  • Exterior White
  • Interior Black
  • option
  • sports chassis
  • GTS Communication Package
  • Rollover body same color
  • torque vectoring
  • Electric folding mirror
  • Satin black wheels
  • Heated seats
  • automatic air-conditioning
  • Power Steering Plus
  • cruise control

Models with sports chassis and torque vectoring (PTV) in particular are very rare. Previously.Boxster GTS with sports chassisI have also had the opportunity to test-drive the "M", but it has been many years since then, and my experience has increased, so I would like to report on it again.

Beautiful voice from low speed GTS sound of 981

After firing up the engine, the PDK starts the car very smoothly. Some used cars have a slightly jerky PDK, but this car's PDK is smooth and in very good condition.

When driving in normal mode, the car shifts up from first to second and third gear at a brisk tempo. The RPMs were around 2000-3000 RPMs, and the 981 still sounded great at this speed range.

It is not particularly loud or anything, but it is pleasant to hear the exhaust sound and mechanical noise in good balance.

With each shift up, the "Bong! The gears connect and the engine howls with a "S" sound. This is a sound that my manual version does not have.

One of the differences between the PDK and MT versions is this sound.PDK can enjoy the sound of both acceleration and deceleration changes. But in the case of the MT, the only sound is the blipping sound during the deceleration change.

This is honestly enviable from a MT rider's point of view.

Try the Sport Chassis and PTV

The impression I get when I start driving is.I don't feel that much difference in ride quality, especially with my unit with PASM.It is very smooth and fluid. It even feels moderately soft and smooth, a characteristic unique to the 981.

I tried steering the car on a winding road. As expected, the front end of the car enters the corner better than PASM, just like the previous sports chassis model I drove. The car quickly changes direction and enters the corner. I think the timing of this change of direction is quicker than that of PASM.

I later took my own Boxster on the same course.Mega-life battery reduces front center of gravityThe front of the building is also very well received, even for PASM.

I had the owner compare the ride, and he said.I don't think it's a big difference, just a small one.He said.

After driving for a while and turning a mid-speed corner, the stability is solid. However, it is not as firm and rigid as the 718's suspension.Even the sport chassis is not as "rigid" feeling as the 718.

However, there is no doubt that it also treads more firmly here than the PASM. I later asked the owner to compare it with my Boxster, and he said that the rear stability and tread is more stable and secure than my Boxster (with the stock lateral members (trans-bar struts) for the 718 installed).

Here's a quick rundown.

[Good front entry.
981 PASM < 981 MegaLife battery for PASM < 981 Sport Chassis < 718

[Rear stability].
981 PASM < 981 Sport Chassis < 981 PASM with 718 lateral members < 718

Incidentally, regarding PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring), it is said that in the case of PTV on PDK cars, the control enhances turning performance by slightly applying the brakes on the inner wheels, but the effect is hardly noticeable when driving on a normal winding road.

When turning a tight R curve at low speeds, the car certainly felt a little more bendy than normal, but whether this was the effect of the sports chassis or the PTV could not be clearly perceived.
