Test drive the Porsche 964 Carrera RS (Touring)! What is the difference from the normal Carrera?

Porsche 911 Carrera RS (964 type)

It's been about three and a half years since the air-cooled Porsche 911 (964 type) Carrera 2 came to my house.

An analog operation feeling that Porsche does not have now, and a captive of handling where driving skills appear as it isEven now, I can ride the 964 with a very fresh feeling without getting tired of it.

It is a car that is fun without flying and can be enjoyed in any speed range and situation from the city to winding and high speed.

This time, theI had the opportunity to test drive the Carrera RS, which is a high-performance model of the 964 type.

RS of 964 isRoad version produced to make the Carrera CUP model an official vehicle in the GT category of FISAbecomes.

It is a model like the GT3 as it is now, and it is a model designed on the premise of circuit driving. According to the materials at that timeIt is limited to 250 units in Japan, and the total number is 2398 units.

In addition, this RS is different from normal RS (base),A very rare "touring" model with comfortable equipment such as air conditioners and power windowsHowever, the rear seats, air conditioner, power steering, audio, etc. are omitted from the base RS, various trims are simplified, and magnesium alloy wheels, flywheels, etc. are replaced with lightweight products.

As a result, the grade is made lighter by about 120 kg.

Since it is a touring, there is also an air conditioner compressor as well as a normal carrera.

And the engine is the M64 / 03 type of the cup car itself, and it seems that the power is about 5ps lower than the cup car due to the muffler and air filter etc.It will be 260ps, which is 10ps higher than the normal Carrera 2.

It's modest in numbers, but it seems that the invisible parts such as the balance of the engine have been tuned.

Impression of ride comfort and suspension

Immediately get into the driver's seat and start the engine. The feeling at the start is not so different from the normal Carrera 2.

Normally, RS touring clutch flywheels are twin-mass type, not single like the base RS. but,This individual seems to have been changed to a single, and boasts a tremendous engine response.

When you lightly push the accelerator, the tachometer needle moves up and down so that it pops up. However, despite such an engine, even if the clutch is engaged while idling, the car starts to move smoothly, which is a great part of Porsche's engine.

When I start running, the ride quality is better than I expected.

I've heard two different opinions about the 964 RS. ""It ’s a very hard car.And instead, "It's hard as it is, but you can ride it normally, and it's comfortable for RS.It is an opinion.

In conclusion, I agree with the latter opinion.

The RS is originally equipped with magnesium wheels, but the owner keeps it for storage and instead installs Fuchs wheels.

Although this individual is RS touring, it has exactly the same undercarriage as the RS base, and recentlyThis individual is a genuine part and has undergone a complete refreshment of the suspension, so it is almost like the ride quality of a new carYou can say that.

Perhaps the opinion that it is a very hard car is such an opinion from the experience of riding on an individual that has already undergone some customization or an individual that has some settling around the suspension. ..

Handling and feeling of power

Of course, when you enter the corner, the front is better than Carrera 2, and the feeling of ground contact and stability is clearly higher. but,Still, I hardly feel the hardness of the suspension and the difficulty of handling.Rather, it bends while rolling a very small amount, so it is very easy to grasp the load and it feels secure.

Compared to the 73 Carrera RS I rode before and the modern GT3, I think it's a milder seasoning.

The shift lever is surprisingly 28mm longer than a normal carrera. This is because the same operating elements as the cup car are used. The feeling is also more modest than normal Carrera, and it is a very pleasant shift feeling.

However, since the response of the engine is extremely sharp, it is a little difficult to get used to the rotation adjustment at the time of downshifting. If you push the accelerator in the usual way, it will blow up to high rpm at once, and the number of revolutions will not match.

After a few trials and errors, I got a sense of rotation adjustment, and when I stepped on the accelerator deeply straight, the feeling of power was still clearer than Carrera.

At least I don't think it's a 10ps difference. Of course, I think there is an effect due to the weight of the car, but even if it is left out,It feels like an engine that is about 30ps higher than the normal Carrera.

With a pleasant air-cooled sound, it runs through the up corners and is stable even in a straight line. Even on a undulating road surface, the steering wheel is not taken more than necessary, and it does not seem to be a suspension that is 40 mm lower than normal.

Is it close to the standing position of GTS or Spider?

This 964 Carrera RS car has a very wide range of defense... Since it says RS, I imagined it would feel more like a racing car, but it's not that hard.

However, it is clearly more athletic than Carrera 2. There are things that are close to what we now call GTS, Spider, and GT4.

Especially this RS is "tooling』\ Specifications are also one of the major factors that make me think so.

Now that the price has soared, it is no longer a car that you can easily go touring, but I would like to use this car to drive on the autobahn on holidays and run through the finest winding roads.
