I think there is a zone where the sound is louder and a zone where it is not so loud, depending on the combination of gears and RPMs. I'll have to ride a bit more to find out exactly which gear and what speed. Another big difference between the 718 and the 981 is the suspension. There is nothing wrong with the 981, but the 718 is really more solid, and it feels like the 981's ambiguity has been removed and cleared up.
