Reviews & Test Rides

What are the differences between the early and late 991 models that you feel when driving a Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS?

My husband recently drove a Porsche 911 Targa 4GTS for a friend of his, and he wrote me about it. 911 Targa is a car that I had a huge crush on for a while. Please take a look if you like.

911 Targa 4 GTS, test drive

The other day, I had a briefI had the opportunity to drive an early model (991.1) Targa 4GTS.At the same time, I borrowed a late model (991.2) Carrera GTS from an acquaintance and drove it for a while for daily use, so I would like to compare it with this car.

The 991.1 Targa we were able to test drive this time was the Targa 4 GTS, clad in a carmine red body. In terms of specsNA horizontally opposed 6-cylinder, 3.8L, 430ps/7500rpm, maximum torque 44.9kg-m/5750rpmIt is.

First of all, when I started the engine and drove off, my first impression was that the start washeavyfelt that "this is not a good idea. This isI was driving a turbocharged 991.2 late model GTS just prior to the event, which was a big deal.I think.

I felt it especially when I started out and picked up speeds of 30 km/h and 40 km/h.

Just so there is no misunderstanding, this is only a comparative discussion. IfIf you drive this Targa 4GTS normally, there's no doubt that it's a big-powered sports car.Probably not many people would be dissatisfied.

In fact, after a minute or so I was completely used to it and felt no discomfort whatsoever.

As for the feeling of the engine, it is indeed an NA engine. It is totally different from the later model.First and foremost is the sound. It is. The high pitched exhaust sound is very pleasant.

Compared to the 981 Boxster Spyder with the same type of engine, it is not as loud as the 981 Boxster Spyder. There is a volume that lives up to the GTS name. The GTS models of this era, whether 911, Macan, Boxster, or Cayman, all sound just great.

The clear sound of the music as it plays and the occasional after-fire production sounds are absolutely poignant.

991GTS, comparison between early and late period

As for the sense of power, I can honestly say that the later model 991.2 is superior to the 991.2.The power of the later model is up 20 PS to 450 PS, but the maximum torque is quite different: 56.1 kg-m/2150-5000 rpm, especially in the lower rev range where it is generated, so the torque feel is totally different.

The late model has a torque feel from low speeds, whereas the early model generates power at revs. IfLate model is easier to drive in places where there is a lot of stop-and-go driving in town.I think. On the other handThe earlier model has a wonderful sense of extension and torque boost when accelerating with the engine running to a certain degree. The later model is probably faster in terms of time, but when the engine is running to some extent, the earlier model feels faster in my experience. I think this is due to the high pitched exhaust sound and the way the torque is boosted.

I asked the owner.PDK shifting is faster in the later stages than in the earlier stages, and also faster in the newer 992 than in the later stages. He said. In the short time I test drove the 992, I could clearly see the difference between it and the 992, but I couldn't tell that clearly about the difference between the earlier and later PDK versions of the 991.

As for the suspension. This Targa 4 GTS is a PDCC(Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control)was installed, but the effect was still significant.I really think it is a very expensive option. It is a very expensive option, but if you have the budget to spare, I would definitely recommend it.

Specifically.First of all, the ride is comfortable. It is flat and there is little swaying. The roll is minimal when cornering, and the car feels as if it is running flat out through the corners.

As I recall, when comparing the early and late 991 models, the late model had a clearly more solid suspension and a stronger ground feel. This Targa 4 GTS feels as good as the later model.I still think the PDCC effect is more or less working.

In addition, theThe fact that the Targa is a four-wheel drive may be significant. The car is stability-oriented from start to finish, and even when exiting a tight-angled corner at a reasonable speed, it is not scary at all as it exits the corner with all four wheels firmly grasping the ground.

Incidentally, since it is a Targa, it is a convertible. However, when the roof is closed, it does not feel like that at all.The roof is so solidly built that one forgets that the roof is completely open, and it does not look at all like a wimp. When the ceiling is pressed from the interior, the material is not elastic like the top, but very solid.

Of course, as for rigidity, the level of rigidity is such that absolutely no layman would be able to tell the difference. In addition, regarding wind entrainment at high speeds, theThe owner told me that the wind gradually becomes more and more entrapping from about 80 km/h or more.He told me that this was the case. He said that since it is a Targa, it is difficult for air to escape from the rear, which may also be a factor.

Targa is rare

From what I've heard, the Targa was produced in much smaller numbers than the GT3.The rarest 911 grade, apparently. This time its GTS, so its even rarer. Thank you very much to the owner for letting us ride on such a rare grade. Please take good care of it and continue to drive it.
