The other day, in the article “Riding a Refreshed Porsche 911 (Air-Cooled 964) Felt Like a Brand-New Car,” I mentioned that I would share the details of the vehicle inspection later. So this time, I want to write about the costs and contents of the inspection.
For this inspection, I asked B-Force, who has been taking care of the 964’s maintenance since delivery. Here is the breakdown of the costs and work done this time:
・Vehicle inspection
・Engine oil change (8.5L)
・Front wiper blade replacement
・Wheel balance adjustment
・Brake fluid replacement
・Statutory fees, etc.
・Total (parts, labor, tax included): ¥165,800
When I said, “The 964’s engine oil takes as much as 8.5 liters!? And I thought getting an old Porsche inspected would cost way more,” my husband replied,
Well, we’ve done quite a bit of maintenance leading up to this inspection. We also had them check various other things, but there was nothing major to fix this time, so the cost stayed reasonable, I’d say.
Also, the 964 has a dry sump system and circulates engine oil to cool the engine. So it naturally uses a bit more oil than modern Porsches.
That’s what he said.
I thought, “Wait, what exactly is a dry sump again…” Even though my husband explained it to me several times before and I did some research myself, I just can’t seem to remember these technical details. So I re-read an article I wrote in the past (Looking into the “Dry Sump System” Adopted by Porsche), and I was able to grasp the big picture.
…But I’ll probably forget it again soon (lol).
Regarding this vehicle inspection, my husband said,
I’m glad we only had to do the basics: oil change, wheel balance adjustment, and brake fluid replacement. There’s a slight oil seepage on the engine, but it’s still totally fine.
At this point, there’s almost nothing concerning about the driving performance, but next up are the stone chips, years of wheel dirt, and some cosmetic fixes. I want to tackle those next.
That’s what he said.
I wonder just how close our air-cooled Porsche 911 (964) will get to feeling like new (laughs).
