718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Test Drive - Review from the perspective of a 981 Boxster GTS and 991 GT3 owner

My husband recently had the opportunity to test drive a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and wrote about his impressions. Please take a look if you would like to read it.

Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, test drive

I went to the dealer the other day for an oil change on my GT3.There is a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 on test drive.I was given the opportunity to test drive the car for a short time. I was allowed to test drive the car for a short time, so I would like to give a short review of the car.

The 718 has until now only been available in a four-cylinder turbocharged model.Starting with the Spyder and GT4, an NA 6-cylinder model, GTS4.0, was added to the GTSThe first is the "I" in "I".

This 4-liter NA engine has the same bore x stroke as the 4-liter NA engine mounted on the GT3, but it has a different lineage. In order to meet recent environmental standards, the engine is equipped with a cylinder deactivation system, and although the current Japanese version does not have a GPF filter, it is an environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient engine.

This test drive is a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 in aventurine green.I've never seen aventurine green on a 718 body before, but it's pretty cool. And the optional satin aurum colored wheels match the body color very well.

The driver's seat area has the familiar 718 interior, the same as in the lineage from the 991 and 981. The driver's seat is the same as in the 991 and 981 models, and the controls are easy to operate. When the engine is turned on, a howl is heard and a heavy bass sound resonates. and a heavy bass sound echoes. As expected with 4 liters, the exhaust sound is lower than the 981 generation GTS and slightly higher than the 4-cylinder turbo 718GTS.It is.

The weight of the clutch is just right, neither particularly heavy nor light. It is a little lighter than the 981 and slightly heavier than the 991 GT3. Clutch connection is very straightforward and easy. When the clutch is slowly lifted, the car automatically raises the idle rpm, which should greatly reduce the number of times the car stalls, even for MT beginners.

The torque from the start is much fatter than that of the 981 GTS or the 991 GT3.This makes it very easy to drive. It is so easy that you can go freely through the city as if you were driving an AT car.

In particular, even when suddenly returning to the accelerator pedal in first or second gear, the driver does not feel the engine brake, or rather the back-torque of the engine, and can drive very smoothly even in situations that tend to be awkward in the GT3 MT. This would be more comfortable for the passenger in the passenger seat.

718 Cayman GTS 4.0, Sport mode, etc.

I try running in normal mode for a while, but the cylinder deactivation is almost unrecognizable. As was the case with the Panamera Turbo, there is no particular indicator, etc., so I wonder if the engine sound has changed a bit. I think it may be paused when the driver thinks that the sound of the engine has changed a little, for example. In any case, I don't think drivers will feel anything as long as they concentrate on driving normally.

The engine noise is a concern, but from startup to idling and starting.Impression similar to 992 with a reasonably loud sound. The exhaust sound is not so loud once the car is running. However, once the car is running, the exhaust sound is not so insistent. It is more likeWhen cold, the whine of the gears is more often heard inside the room.Feeling.

In the zone around 3000-4000 rpm, the engine and exhaust sound asserts itself in its own way, but the exhaust sound in the 2000 rpm range, which is often used, is a bit sad compared to the 981 GTS, to be honest.

Then, when the car is set to Sport or Sport Plus and the accelerator is pushed hard, the NA 4-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder awakens with a superbly sharp response. This sharpness of response is probably 10-20% more than that of the 981 GTS.

In no time at all, the needle of the rev counter passes through the middle RPM range and heads for the higher RPM range. The feeling of acceleration and G-force on the body at that time is quite strong, and one can enjoy a considerable sense of fast acceleration. The sound of the engine and exhaust at this time is wonderful. As one would expect from a NA horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine. The sound of the engine and exhaust sound is wonderful.I knew it!Many of you may be thinking, 'What's the point of this?

The brakes have a great touch. The car slows down and downshifts with a single effort of the foot. Auto-blipping in sport mode is also very pleasant. The car revs up beautifully with a "BOOM! and the revs connect beautifully.Blipping and backfire sounds are subdued and not as loud as in the 981 era.People who like this kind of gentle, natural exhaust sound will probably like it.
