Surprised by How Much a Porsche Tests the Driver’s Skill! Test Driving the Porsche 986 Boxster S

Reviews & Test Drives

This time, on the Royu Driveway, I had the chance to test drive the 986 Boxster S, 6-speed manual, which my husband previously introduced on the blog. Featuring a mid-engine layout, 252 horsepower, and a compact, lightweight body, this adorable Boxster really stands out.

In conclusion, it was a “Porsche that truly reflects the driver’s skill.” This is exactly the kind of car where the driver’s technique directly shows in how the car performs. It was truly a valuable experience.

986 Boxster S, Let’s Feel It!

First off, the moment I started the engine, I felt a mild and refined impression. The engine start-up sound was subtle, and the silver body paired perfectly with the brown interior, creating a sophisticated, mature atmosphere.

Then, when I actually drove it, our 981 Boxster GTS at home felt almost like a cyborg in comparison, and I strongly sensed a pleasant analog feeling from this car.

The clutch felt light, and the gear lever was smooth and easy to operate. Especially in terms of handling, it turned better than I expected. Compared to the early 991 Carrera I previously rode in and our 964 Carrera 2 at home, this felt easier to turn and more responsive to handling inputs.

The test drive lasted only about 10 minutes, and when I returned to the Royu lookout saying, “It was very mild and refined—” my husband said this one line:

“Maybe you drove it timidly like usual and didn’t even get to taste a bit of what the 986 Boxster S can really do? lol”

And honestly, that was exactly right… (laughs)

When it’s someone else’s precious car, it’s hard to get into the mindset of “Alright! Let’s push it! Let’s go!” And as usual, even though it’s a manual, I was driving it like an automatic, stuck in 3rd or 4th gear… So next, the owner took the wheel, and I got to experience the 986 Boxster S from the passenger seat.

The Boxster S Unleashed by Its Owner

The moment the owner took over the driving… I was absolutely amazed.

Wow, does it really sound this good?! That engine note is amazing! And it’s so light! It turns so well! Incredible!” I was genuinely excited.

No wonder—the car transformed completely, the engine felt lively and spirited, almost like a living creature.

When I was driving, the Boxster was quiet and reserved, but once unleashed, it attacked corners dynamically and aggressively.

“Wait!? Does this car really turn this well!?”

I couldn’t help but say it out loud. It was like watching a fish freed into water, the car clearly enjoying itself.

I was humbled. My own driving suddenly felt embarrassing.

After the test drive, the owner shared this:

“Cars from this era are compact and light. They don’t have the power of modern Porsches, nor the electronic controls, so if you get cocky and make a mistake, it can get really dangerous—a car with what you might call ‘troublesome’ characteristics. But that’s what makes it fun.
On the other hand, modern cars like the Taycan are incredibly stable no matter how you corner or even in the rain, and their weight gives a great sense of security. If you mostly drive with your kids now, a troublesome car like the 986 isn’t the best choice (laughs). Modern Porsches are safer and definitely better. But if you want to hone your manual driving skills and master it in the future, I’d definitely recommend this car. It’s truly a fun car!”

Even though it’s an older Porsche, I think its limit performance is higher than I imagined. But since I usually drive without thinking about weight transfer, I was timid behind the wheel of such an analog car.

I haven’t been to a driving school recently, so this experience made me consider visiting the Porsche Experience Center (PEC) to drive the base Cayman or Boxster 718. (Though the 718’s performance is incredibly high too.)

Driving, Always Improving

Through this test drive, I strongly felt the charm of a Porsche that clearly reflects the driver’s skill. I think I’ll never be able to fully unleash this car’s limit performance in my lifetime, but it was a great opportunity to rediscover Porsche’s depth.

Thank you so much to the owner for letting me drive this precious car!
