For Porsche enthusiasts who love the 911—especially its air-cooled models—the 993 holds a special place as the last air-cooled Porsche.

What if you could bring its timeless looks up to date with modern technology, without compromising its design? RUF has announced an LED conversion kit made specifically for the Porsche 911 (993). Let’s take a closer look.

A Collaboration Between RUF and Tony Hatter

Tony Hatter, the designer behind the 993, is said to have contributed to the development of this LED kit.

Thanks to the collaboration between RUF and Hatter, this is more than a functional upgrade: it’s designed to honor the 993’s design philosophy. There are plenty of aftermarket LED kits on the market, but many look cheap and detract from the car’s original design.

RUF’s kit, however, is finished to a high standard and addresses those concerns.

The kit consists of nine components, including the headlights, fog lights, turn signals, taillights, and the distinctive center taillight bar on the 993. These parts bring LED technology to the car while respecting its original design. Installation is plug-and-play and is said to be relatively straightforward.

Improved Safety and Visibility

The kit’s biggest appeal lies in its performance. The LED high beams are said to be three times brighter than the original Porsche headlights. That means a significant boost in visibility at night—and, in turn, a clear safety benefit. The LED kit has also been approved by SAE (the Society of Automotive Engineers) and reportedly meets all relevant safety and reliability standards, offering added peace of mind for owners. However, as of the time of writing, approval and availability in Japan have not been confirmed.

RUF CEO Alois Ruf said: “The 993 is part of RUF’s Neo Classic sports car program, and it was my vision to equip the latest generation of air-cooled Porsche 911s with LED lighting. I wanted to create a lighting system that prioritizes safety, visibility, and authenticity.” His words convey the passion RUF has invested in this kit.

A Touch of RUF DNA

The LED kit reportedly shares its design with the lighting used on RUF supercars such as the Turbo R and Turbo R Limited.

In other words, fitting the kit brings your Porsche a little closer to a RUF. It also offers the satisfaction of using genuine RUF parts. At around $8,718 in the U.S. (approximately ¥1.34 million), the kit is certainly expensive, though its price is said to be reasonable compared with other aftermarket LED kits.

Installation is said to be simple: the LED module sits in the center of the lamp cluster, surrounded by a funnel-shaped housing with retaining clips, so it fits the original headlamp seat. That may make a DIY installation possible, but given the cost of the parts, having a professional do the work would be the safer choice.

An Upgrade 993 Owners Won’t Want to Miss

RUF’s LED conversion kit looks like a compelling upgrade for Porsche 993 owners. It brings modern technology to the car without compromising its design.

Along with better visibility and safety, the kit offers a special connection to RUF’s heritage. It’s not cheap, but the benefits may well justify the price. If you own a Porsche 993, could this be the right upgrade for your car?

I don’t own a 993 myself, but if I did, I’d definitely be tempted to fit these parts.
