BYD’s New Electric Sports Car Spotted on Public Roads for the First Time

BYD, the Chinese automaker, has reportedly been spotted testing a new electric sports car on public roads for the first time. Although the car was covered in camouflage, its shape has already sparked speculation that it could be a high-performance model capable of taking on the Porsche 911.

The new model is said to have been influenced by Wolfgang Egger, the former Lamborghini and Audi designer. With Egger involved, expectations are high that BYD’s sports car will pair refined styling with impressive performance.

BYD’s New Sub-Brand, Fang Cheng Bao

In June 2023, BYD launched Fang Cheng Bao (方程豹) as its fifth sub-brand. The brand plans to offer a broad lineup, with vehicles ranging from off-roaders to sports cars.

The first Fang Cheng Bao model, the Bao 5, was unveiled in November 2023. At a conference in spring 2024, the company also revealed the flagship Bao 8 SUV, the compact Super 3 SUV, and the concept for the Super 9 electric sports car—the model now attracting attention.

What We Know About the Spotted Electric Sports Car

According to Chinese automotive news site CarNewsChina, BYD’s new electric sports car has been spotted in China for the first time. The images show a sporty two-door EV being transported on a car carrier.

The car is covered in the blue camouflage seen on previous BYD prototypes, but its aggressive styling, low-slung body, and sloping front end are still visible. As the car is still under development, details such as the headlights and rear bumper remain hidden.

Predicted Specs and What Could Be Next

Interestingly, reports suggest the electric sports car may launch under Denza (腾势), another BYD brand, rather than Fang Cheng Bao, where it was originally expected to appear. Denza began as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and BYD, but BYD recently took full ownership of the brand.

Chinese media speculate that the new EV could have four seats, like the Porsche 911. However, that detail cannot be confirmed from the images.

As for the powertrain, the car is expected to use a setup similar to that of Denza’s Z9. That could mean three electric motors and a combined output of around 1,000 horsepower (710 kW).

Next year, BYD’s Denza brand plans to enter the European market with the Z9 GT, a shooting brake. Some expect the new electric sports car to follow.

BYD’s electric sports car could have what it takes to challenge the Porsche 911. Details and an official announcement are still eagerly awaited, and all eyes are on what comes next. The arrival of a serious high-performance electric sports car from a Chinese automaker could bring fresh momentum to the automotive industry.
