Introducing the New 4WD Models in the Late 992 Series
Recently, Porsche unveiled a new lineup of 4WD models in the late 992.2 generation of the 911.
The Carrera 4S is priced at 23.52 million yen, the Carrera 4S Cabriolet at 26.06 million yen, and the Targa 4S at 26.33 million yen. All are equipped with a 3.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder twin-turbo engine producing 480 horsepower. This matches the power output of the earlier GTS model and is likely the last of the pure gasoline engine 911s. Power is delivered to all four wheels through an 8-speed PDK transmission, enabling the Carrera 4S coupe to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds.
With this new release, it’s a perfect time to revisit a key question: what are the differences between 4WD and 2WD in the Porsche 911, and which should you choose?
The Allure of 4WD and My Personal Experience
Before purchasing my Porsche, I was most drawn to the 4WD models.
The appeal of models like the Carrera 4S and Carrera 4, equipped with all-wheel drive, was simple: the rear-engine, two-wheel-drive layout always seemed somewhat unstable to me. Without ever having driven one, I imagined that four driven wheels must naturally offer better stability.
I vividly remember being captivated by the Carrera 4S from the 996 era whenever I spotted one on the highway.
The continuous rear garnish connecting the taillights was stunning, and the glamorous wide-body styling often found on 4WD models was irresistible. Later, owning a 991 early Carrera 4 GTS and experiencing RR models like the 964 firsthand allowed me to truly feel the differences between the two drivetrains.
The Overwhelming Stability and Traits of 4WD Models
The standout feature of 4WD models is their exceptional stability.
When you exit a corner and floor the accelerator, the traction is phenomenal. Because the engine sits at the rear, the back end is heavy, naturally putting strong traction on the rear tires. The 4WD system adds front-wheel drive, effectively pulling the car forward. It feels like being launched from a catapult as you power out of every corner.
This stability is especially noticeable on highways. Interestingly, the ride comfort is also impressive—not because the suspension is soft, but because the 4WD system skillfully controls pitch motion front to rear. For those considering the 911 as a date car, this minimal seesaw-like movement is a huge plus. Even when pushing hard on mountain roads, there’s no fear—no unsettling front-to-back sway.
All-weather capability is another major advantage of 4WD models. Whether it’s heavy rain or light snow, as long as the tires are good, these cars feel invincible. If you were to name the fastest car in any weather, the Porsche 911 4WD models would be top contenders. The Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S truly embody the spirit of an all-weather sports car.
Drawbacks of 4WD and How It Differs from 2WD
On the flip side, 4WD models do have downsides.
The most noticeable is weight. Compared to the rear-wheel-drive RR layout, 4WD cars feel noticeably heavier. While not as heavy as the Targa’s roof structure, the overwhelming grip and planted feel can reduce the sense of excitement. Whether you find this heft enjoyable or too stable and boring depends largely on personal preference.
The driving feel on winding roads is also quite different. The 4WD model is so stable that nothing unexpected happens—it’s almost too stable. There’s little room to “play” with the car using your skill. In this regard, the RR models offer more driving enjoyment. If you appreciate stability as fun, 4WD suits you; if you crave nimbleness and lightness, RR is the better choice.
Guidance for Your First Porsche 911 Purchase
I’m often asked, “Should I choose the Carrera 4 4WD or the standard RR 2WD?”
My answer is clear: if you want to truly understand and experience the Porsche 911, I recommend starting with an RR model. This lets you grasp the essence of what an RR layout and a 911 really are.
Then, when you move on to a second or third Porsche, consider a 4WD model. The solid stability and almost invincible confidence it offers are best appreciated after you’ve experienced the RR’s raw character. Experiencing them in this order deepens your understanding of each drivetrain’s unique qualities.
Of course, this depends heavily on personal taste. Whether you find stability enjoyable or prefer nimbleness is the key to choosing the right 911 for you. Either way, you’ll fully enjoy the magic of the Porsche 911—just be sure to clarify your preferences before making your choice.
