Porsche and Michelin have jointly developed a new tire for the Porsche 911 GT3 RS: the Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 (PSS5).

This is more than just an incremental update. Designed to significantly cut lap times in wet conditions, the tire promises to let drivers enjoy more time on track, with greater confidence and safety.

10 Seconds Faster in Wet Conditions

The PSS5’s standout feature is its remarkable grip on wet and cold surfaces.

At Michelin’s development center, a test driver ran the 911 GT3 RS on the technical, 2.8-kilometer 3bis wet circuit with PSS5 tires. Compared with the previous Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 N, the car reportedly shaved more than 10 seconds off its lap time—a leap in performance that almost feels like stepping into a different racing category.

Andreas Preuninger, head of Porsche’s GT models, said customers—particularly those focused on performance—had been asking to spend more time on track in spring and fall. “The new tire will significantly extend the number of months in which the GT3 RS can be used throughout the year,” he said.

Jörg Bergmeister Helped Develop the Tire

Jörg Bergmeister also contributed to the PSS5’s development. He made fine adjustments to raise the threshold at which the tire begins to lose contact with the road. The result, according to Michelin, is improved stability in wet conditions, giving drivers more confidence to explore the GT3 RS’s full performance.

The PSS5 features a deeper tread, specially designed grooves, and a dedicated rubber-and-silica compound. Together, these technologies help the tire warm up more quickly and stay in its optimal operating window for longer.

Currently Available Only Through Manthey

For now, the PSS5 is offered only for the GT3 RS and is available through Manthey, renowned for its Porsche tuning expertise.

It may eventually become available for other models and through regular tire shops. Many GT-model owners, however, may prefer a tire with grip approaching that of the Cup 2 without needing a dry-weather-only tire.

For Porsche owners, tires are more than just consumables.

They’re essential components that help unlock a car’s full potential and deepen the driving experience. The PSS5 could offer 911 GT3 RS owners an exciting new option.
