My husband bought something called the Amazon Echo Auto and tried installing it in the 911, and he wrote an article about it. Please take a look if you’re interested.

Amazon Echo Auto

Recently, Amazon Echo Auto was released in Japan. It had already been on sale overseas, and I had wanted it so much that I had considered importing it myself several times. So as soon as the release date in Japan was announced, I pre-ordered it and got it on the very day.

Echo Auto lets you use Amazon Echo inside your car, so by saying “Alexa, do such and such…” you can play music, listen to the news, and more.

This time, I want to share my impressions and review after installing it in the Porsche 911 right away.

At home, we have been using Amazon Echo and Google Home quite frequently for a long time. We have Google Home in the living room and Amazon Echo in my study.

We use them not only for listening to music and radio but also for controlling appliances like the TV and air conditioner. (I’m the only one in the family who uses them though…)

Setting up the Echo Auto is very simple. Connect the USB cable to the device, attach it to the air vent with the included mount, then launch the Alexa app on your smartphone and select “Add Device.” Just follow the instructions, and setup takes only a few minutes.

Once setup is complete, Echo Auto responds to the wake word “Alexa,” allowing you to listen to music, news, and much more.

By the way, the Echo Auto itself does not connect to Wi-Fi or cellular networks. It only connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth, and the music streams from the Alexa app installed on your phone. In other words, it’s easiest to think of Echo Auto as a voice remote control that uses voice commands to operate the Alexa app on your smartphone.

Therefore, any data used for music streaming or other communications comes from your smartphone’s data plan; there is no separate contract needed for Echo Auto itself.

So far, I mainly use Echo Auto to listen to the radio. Especially in the Porsche 911 (992 model), there is no AM radio at all, only Wide FM. Because of this, you can’t listen to AM stations like NHK Radio 1, but with Echo Auto, just say “Alexa, play NHK Radio 1,” and it will stream NHK’s primary broadcast via Radiko.

Also, during my commute, I check the morning news by saying “Alexa, play the latest news,” and it reads out Yahoo News topics or plays the latest NHK radio news. Asking “What’s my schedule today?” will have it read your Google Calendar appointments. Of course, when listening to music, you can easily play songs by saying “Alexa, play [song name]” or “play the playlist.”

I also installed it in my Nissan Note e-power NISMO because it was so convenient

Until now, I had to select songs using the steering wheel controls or touch the navigation screen, but controlling everything by voice is very convenient and, above all, much safer. If you haven’t tried Amazon Echo yet, why not start with your car? I think voice AI is even more useful in the car, where your hands are often busy, than at home.
