Porsche Affirms Continuation of Internal Combustion Engine Models
Porsche is showing a cautious stance toward a full transition to electric vehicles (EVs). According to Automotive News Europe, the company is planning to introduce new internal combustion engine models in response to a slowdown in EV sales.
Porsche CFO Lutz Meschke stated, “It is clear that we will continue internal combustion engines much longer than before.” According to Car and Driver, Meschke pointed out that “there is a clear trend toward gasoline engines in the premium luxury segment,” and Porsche plans to “respond accordingly” within its product cycle.
Porsche’s EV Lineup and Future Plans
Currently, Porsche sells two high-end EV models: the Taycan and the recently launched Macan. Initially, the plan was to introduce more EV-only models, including the Cayenne, 718, and a new high-performance SUV.
However, according to Meschke, Porsche may offer hybrid or internal combustion engine versions alongside these EV models. He mentioned that “decisions are still in progress.”
Previously, Porsche aimed for 80% of its sales to be EVs by 2030. However, with EV sales plummeting in the U.S. and domestic Chinese brands producing more affordable EVs, Porsche’s EV sales have not been as strong as expected.
Demand for Internal Combustion Engines in the Premium Segment
Meschke’s remarks suggest that there remains strong demand for internal combustion engine vehicles in the premium luxury segment. This trend may reflect consumer preferences and expectations in the luxury car market.
For high-end sports car makers like Porsche, elements such as engine sound and driving feel are crucial parts of brand identity. These aspects are still difficult to fully replicate with current EV technology.
Porsche’s Future Strategy
Porsche’s recent policy shift reflects a flexible response to market trends. Rather than completely abandoning the transition to EVs, the company appears to be adopting a strategy of developing and selling both internal combustion engine models and EVs in parallel.
This approach allows Porsche to diversify risk and broadly meet customer needs in a rapidly changing automotive market. It also offers the advantage of adapting flexibly to evolving environmental regulations in different countries.
Porsche’s decision could influence other luxury car manufacturers. Going forward, the coexistence of internal combustion engine models and EVs in the premium segment may continue for a longer period.
Porsche’s future moves could impact the overall pace and direction of EV adoption in the automotive industry. As the company balances environmental considerations with customer demands, all eyes will be on how Porsche shapes its product strategy.
