Introduction: The Used Market Trends for the 992 Early Model

The used market for the Porsche 911 992 early model is thriving.

According to Car Sensor data, about one-third of the currently listed 911s—425 units—are 992 early models. Prices have started to stabilize and don’t seem to be soaring as much as before. Given this situation, more Porsche enthusiasts might be considering buying a used 992 early model.

In this article, I will share detailed insights on the characteristics of each 992 early model grade based on my own purchases and test drives, and explain which type of Porsche owner each suits best. We’ll cover a wide lineup including Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera T, Carrera GTS, Targa 4, Targa 4 GTS, Turbo S, Turbo S Cabriolet, and even the GT3 and Dakar models.

The Most Recommended Grade Among 992 Early Models

To get straight to the point, the most recommended 992 early model is the Carrera T. The reason is that it embodies the essence of the 911 most authentically. Here are the key features of the Carrera T:

1. Agile and nimble handling
2. A setup that makes it feel lighter than its actual weight
3. Turbo engine with characteristics similar to a naturally aspirated engine
4. Strong torque from low RPMs with almost no turbo lag
5. Smooth and linear engine revving

I recommend choosing the manual transmission version of the Carrera T if possible. Having experienced nearly every 992 variant, this was by far the most fun 911 to drive.

Characteristics of Each Grade and Suitable Porsche Owners

1. Turbo S
The Turbo S boasts abundant power and overwhelming acceleration from low to high speeds. It can deliver a gentle ride but also outperforms the GT3 when you push the accelerator. It’s ideal for Porsche owners who want high-level comfort in city driving, excellent performance on winding roads, and top-tier sports driving capabilities.

2. 911 Carrera (Base Model)
The base 911 Carrera is attractive for its ease of handling in urban environments. The ride quality is comfortable, making it especially suitable for city driving. Engine characteristics include:

・Rich torque from low RPMs
・Almost no turbo lag with very responsive throttle
・Easy to drive

Compared to the S and GTS, the Carrera is easier to handle in everyday situations and makes you want to drive more. It’s particularly well-suited for use in Japanese urban areas and city expressways.

3. Carrera S / GTS
The Carrera S and GTS are best suited for Porsche owners who mainly drive on highways, especially suburban expressways like the Shin-Tomei, Chugoku, and Tohoku Expressways. However, due to some turbo lag, they are less easy to handle at low speeds compared to the base model. Their power and acceleration at high speeds are exceptional, with the GTS offering a particularly impressive sound and strong presence.

4. Targa 4 / Targa 4 GTS
Compared to regular 911s, the Targa models feel heavier and have a higher center of gravity, but they more than make up for it with their unique appeal.

Features include:

・Iconic design highlighted by the stunning Targa bar
・A presence that blends well in urban settings
・Softer suspension compared to other models
・Luxurious ride quality

The Targa is perfect for Porsche owners who value style and elegance. It’s also great as a date car and recommended for those who want to enjoy driving in the city.

Special Models: GT3 and Dakar

GT3
The GT3 is essentially a racing car. It’s designed for circuits and large-scale winding roads. Its features include:

・Spartan setup
・Loud noise
・Extraordinary cornering ability
・Powerful brakes
・Exhilarating engine sound that revs high

The GT3 is perfect for hardcore Porsche owners who want to enjoy a race car on public roads, but if you mainly use your car daily, other models are more suitable.

Dakar Model
The 911 Dakar is an extremely fun car. Although it’s a limited edition, it has an irresistible charm that makes you want to drive it endlessly. It has the appeal of a blend between the GTS and Carrera T. Its crisp blipping at low speeds, engine sound, and ride comfort are all outstanding.

If it weren’t a limited edition, the Dakar would be my second recommendation after the Carrera T.

Summary: How to Choose the Best 992 911 for You

Choosing a 992 911 depends greatly on personal preferences and intended use. Here’s a simple guideline:

1. For all-around enjoyment: Carrera T or base 911 Carrera
2. For highway-focused driving: Carrera S or GTS (Carrera recommended for city expressways)
3. For top-level performance in all situations: Turbo S
4. For design and elegance: Targa series
5. For circuit driving and large winding roads: GT3

However, these are just my personal opinions based on experience.

Ultimately, it’s important to test drive and choose the car that suits you best. Each 992 911 grade has its own charm, and whichever you pick, you’ll enjoy a fantastic driving experience. Take your time and select according to your lifestyle and values.
