Is the New 911 Revealed on April 14 the GT3 Sport Cabriolet? — A Leak Roundup Ahead of the World Premiere

On April 14, Porsche Will Unveil a “Especially Fun Sports Car”

Porsche is gearing up to surprise us.

On April 14, 2026, at 16:00 CEST (23:00 JST), Porsche will hold a digital world premiere. The official press release on the Porsche Newsroom reveals no car name, describing it only as an “especially fun sports car from Zuffenhausen.”

The stream will be available on Porsche Newsroom and YouTube. However, numerous overseas media outlets, including Autoblog, have leaked details making the identity almost certain: an open-top model based on the 911 GT3. Ahead of the April 14 announcement, let’s organize what we know so far.

What the Teaser Video Reveals

From the covered 911 silhouette and various spy shots, several important details emerge. Multiple outlets like Carscoops and CarBuzz have analyzed the teaser, confirming the following features:

  • Design of the LED headlights
  • Aggressive front bumper
  • Clean rear end without a fixed wing

The last point is decisive. The absence of a fixed rear wing suggests it follows the GT3 Touring lineage.

Engine and Transmission — Two Conflicting Theories

Information on the engine specs varies depending on sources.

Currently, two main theories circulate:

  • Theory 1 (S/T Engine): 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six, 518 hp / 465 Nm — reported by The Supercar Blog and AutoNext
  • Theory 2 (Standard GT3 Engine): 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six, 502 hp (8,400 rpm) / 469 Nm (6,100 rpm) — reported by CarBuzz and others

Both agree on the 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six. Personally, I lean toward the second theory matching the 992.2 GT3 specs. It seems more practical for Porsche to use the current GT3 engine without a dedicated tune-up as S/T would require. Either way, the very idea of enjoying a high-revving 4.0L NA flat-six in an open-air setting is thrilling enough to define this car’s essence.

Regarding the transmission, most sources claim it’s 6-speed manual only. However, initial reports from The Supercar Blog also mentioned “6-speed manual or 7-speed PDK.” We’ll have to wait for the official announcement. If it ends up manual-only, this sets the car’s character sharply: RWD + NA + MT + Open. Such a pure sports car combo is almost extinct today.

Aerodynamics, Roof, and Curb Weight

There will be no fixed rear wing.

Instead of the large swan-neck wing found on the standard GT3, expect a retractable rear spoiler like the GT3 Touring. Synthesizing media reports, confirmed aero features include:

  • GT3 RS-derived air vents behind the front fenders
  • Front fenders likely sourced from the 911 S/T
  • Center-exit dual exhaust

The roof will be an electric soft-top made of fabric with one-touch operation. Official weight figures have yet to be released, but adding the roof mechanism to the GT3 coupe’s ~1,420 kg suggests a weight roughly between 1,480 to 1,500 kg. My own 718 Spyder RS weighs about 1,410 kg, so this is slightly heavier. Still, over 500 hp from the 4.0L NA flat-six powering this weight promises an exhilarating driving experience.

Price, Production Volume, and My Predictions

Let’s touch on pricing and production volumes, which are hotly anticipated.

CarBuzz reports a base price of approximately $230,500 (around 35 million yen). It is also said this will not be a limited edition, but effectively a low-volume production run.

This car is regarded as the spiritual successor to the Speedster from the 991 generation. Interestingly, evo argues it is not a GT3 Cabriolet but a Speedster. Regardless of name, the RWD + NA + MT + open-top formula remains the same.

Here’s my own prediction. As I mentioned in previous blogs, I believe the official name will be “Sport Cabriolet (S/C)”, not “GT3 Cabriolet” but “GT3 Sport Cabriolet.” Porsche’s secrecy suggests they want to surprise us with this new nomenclature. I also expect specs to align with the 992.2 GT3, favoring the standard GT3 engine theory due to regulations over the S/T engine.

Personally, I enjoy the open-top, high-revving NA combo daily with my 718 Spyder RS. Roaring a 4.0-liter flat-six to 9,000 rpm while feeling the wind is incomparable. This new GT3 Sport Cabriolet aims to embody exactly that world.

I’ll be ready at 23:00 JST on April 14 to watch the live stream and see what Porsche unveils next!
