Does Owning a Porsche Change Your Life?

I often hear stories like, “My life got better after I started driving a Porsche.” This is something I frequently hear from readers of this blog and fellow Porsche enthusiasts around me.
This time, I’d like to share my thoughts on this topic, drawing from my own experience.

Does owning a Porsche really change your life?
The question: “Does owning a Porsche change your life?”
To get straight to the point, some people’s lives improve after buying a Porsche, while others’ do not. (Which is only natural…)
Back when I was a young salaryman, I too thought, “If I buy a Porsche, my life will change, my income will increase, and I will succeed!” to some extent.
But looking back now, life isn’t that simple—just buying a Porsche doesn’t magically turn things around.
So why is it that some people’s lives change after buying (or even before buying) a Porsche, while others’ don’t? What common traits do those whose lives improve share?
Let me explore these questions here.
Decisiveness and action beyond conventional wisdom
This is about the mindset before buying a Porsche…
As everyone knows, Porsche is an expensive car. Whether new or used, it costs significantly more than many other models, and maintaining it properly requires considerable expenses. The ride is firm, it doesn’t seat many people, and its fuel efficiency is worse than ordinary cars.
A Porsche is, above all, a luxury item.
It’s a highly specialized car, and if you think purely in terms of practicality, minivans or eco-cars are far better choices.
You might face opposition from those around you who see it as a wasteful expense, or even jealousy. You might hesitate yourself, wondering, “Is it really okay to spend such a large amount or take out a loan for this?”
Overcoming these obstacles, convincing others, and choosing to buy a pricier car than most requires stronger decisiveness and drive than most people have.
I believe this strength is a crucial element for success.
Focus on increasing income rather than just saving
Saving money from your current salary to buy a Porsche is a valid approach. Also, in Japan, saving is often seen as a virtue, so when buying something, people tend to focus first on “saving.”
However, I believe it’s far more important to take action to increase your current income rather than just save.
In fact, owning a Porsche costs money even after purchase. Insurance, maintenance, tolls, gas, taxes, inspections—the monthly expenses definitely rise.
When I was a salaryman living alone, I struggled to maintain my car, and I realized firsthand that “even if you manage to buy it by saving, maintaining it afterward is even harder.”
So, to enjoy a fulfilling car life with a Porsche and enrich your life, shifting your mindset to increasing your income is essential. Most people whose lives improve after buying a Porsche seem to share this way of thinking.
They seriously face the challenge of earning more with the mindset of “I want to earn enough to comfortably maintain my Porsche” and “I want to grow into a person worthy of owning a Porsche.”
This serious commitment to earning more is what leads to life improving after buying a Porsche.
Don’t set limits on your income
Once, a senior entrepreneur asked me, “How much do you want to earn in the future?” At the time, I aimed for what society calls a successful income, but my actual income didn’t rise much.
That was because I had set my own ceiling.
Unconsciously, I gave myself the suggestion, “I can’t earn more than this amount,” and as a result, I couldn’t even reach my target income.
However, once I understood how to earn better, I naturally thought, “Hey, maybe I can go much higher if I want to.” Removing that ceiling and refusing to limit myself helped my income steadily grow.
Looking at Porsche owners around me, many don’t set limits on their income and have a pure desire to grow.
Instead of thinking, “I can only go this far,”
they think, “I want to earn more to get the car I want,” “I want to aim for the behavior and income worthy of owning a Porsche,” and “I want to learn from other owners and improve myself.”
They eagerly absorb good things, put them into practice, and keep pushing forward on the path to success.
Actively join Porsche owner and successful circles
If you’ve bought a Porsche, I believe your life will improve further by immersing yourself in communities you can meet through Porsche, interacting with successful people, and learning from them.
Earlier, I mentioned not setting limits on income, but simply forcing yourself to think “I must not set limits” or “I must aim for a higher income” often doesn’t work well.
That’s because unconsciously, you give yourself the suggestion, “That’s an insanely high goal, I can’t do it now.”
What’s important is to naturally feel “I can do it” or “I can clearly imagine myself reaching higher.” To achieve this, you need to place yourself among successful people and raise your own standards.
Since buying my Porsche, I’ve had the chance to interact with other Porsche owners, and being with them makes me think, “I’m still like a rookie compared to them; there are always people better than me. That means I can also go higher.”
That’s a brief summary of my thoughts.
Not everyone who buys a Porsche will see their life improve, but I believe those who share the traits described above tend to have better lives after buying a Porsche.
