Porsche Panamera: Over 18,700 km in Just 1 Year and 4 Months Despite Not Driving That Much

Porsche Panamera

Panamera Mileage

The Panamera came to our home in October 2017. And yet, in just 1 year and 4 months, the Panamera’s mileage has already surpassed 18,700 km.

Previously, our 970 Panamera Edition was replaced when it reached “1.5 years and 13,000 km,” so compared to that, this Panamera Turbo is being driven at quite a fast pace.

Moreover, my husband has hardly been using the Panamera for commuting lately, and besides the Panamera, we also have a Boxster GTS, a 911 (924C2), and a VW Golf 7, so it’s definitely not like we drive the Panamera every day.

So then, how on earth did it rack up over 18,000 km… (*_*)?

The other day I asked my husband, “It’s already over 18,000 km… but we haven’t really driven that much, right!?

Yeah, that’s right. I’ve hardly used the Panamera for commuting recently… Even picking up from kindergarten is less than 5 km round trip, right? So how come it’s clocking over 1,000 km a month? It’s a mystery.

Still, since the odometer isn’t broken, I decided to break down how much we’ve actually driven.

Panamera Drives

First, I tried to list all the medium- and long-distance drives I could remember. There might be some I forgot, but here’s what I know so far:

Approximate round-trip distances calculated with Google Maps
① Hakone Turnpike – Fuji Speedway – around Mt. Fuji: 1,000 km
② Brother’s family home in Nara Prefecture (3 times): 110 km × 3
③ Haga, Hyogo Prefecture: 260 km
④ Wakayama City area: 180 km
⑤ Kansai Airport (2 times): 120 km × 2
⑥ Tondabayashi (2 times): 120 km × 2
⑦ Tsukigase to Nara Nürburgring, Nara Prefecture: 250 km
⑧ Nakabayashi Kogyo in Tondabayashi (3 times): 120 km × 3
⑨ Hakone Turnpike – West Izu Driveway – Fuji Speedway: 1,000 km
⑩ Toyota City: 250 km
⑪ Nagoya: 200 km
⑫ Nanko – Shinmoji – Amakusa – Aso – Shinmoji (2 times): 700 km × 2
⑬ Nachikatsuura – Shirahama: 500 km
⑭ Awaji Island (2 times): 200 km × 2
⑬ Returning to my parents’ home (5 times): 100 km × 5
⑮ Returning to husband’s parents’ home (5 times): 180 km × 5
Total: 8,010 km

8,010 km… (-_-).

Only 8,010 km… so where did the other 10,000 km come from!?

Let’s Calculate Daily Use

① Husband’s Commute

First, about my husband’s commute. The round-trip distance from home to work is about 50 km. For a while after the Panamera was delivered, he commuted almost every day in it. Probably about 15 times the first month, then about 3 times a month after that. He doesn’t commute during long holidays like Golden Week, Obon, or New Year’s, so he’s commuted about 50 times in the Panamera so far.

So, the total distance for his commuting is about 2,500 km.

② My Work Trips to Osaka

On my side, I probably make about two round trips to Osaka for work each month, so about 30 times so far. The round-trip distance is about the same as my husband’s commute, around 50 km, which adds up to 1,500 km.

③ Shopping Trips to Kobe

I think I’ve gone to Kobe and Sannomiya about 15 times in the Panamera. Trips to Daimaru Kobe, the Anpanman Museum, umie, and so on… The round-trip distance is about 30 km, so that’s 450 km.

④ Picking Up from Nursery and Kindergarten

Picking up our eldest daughter from kindergarten is about 3 km round trip, but often I stop by the supermarket afterward, so let’s say 5 km. I do this about 20 times a month, and I use the Panamera about 15 of those times, excluding summer, winter, and spring breaks… so about 180 times so far.

Including picking up our younger daughter from nursery, the total distance for school runs is about 1,000 km.

⑤ Weekend Shopping Nearby

About 2–3 times a month, our family goes shopping or for drives nearby on weekends. Assuming each round trip is 50 km, that’s 150 km per month. Over 1 year and 4 months, that adds up to 2,400 km.

Adding up ① through ⑤ gives us 7,850 km.

So combined with the medium- and long-distance drives, that’s 15,860 km.

Still about 3,000 km short… (*_*)

Well, maybe there are some long drives I forgot to include, or we might have used it more in daily life than I realized, so it’s easy to see how it could quickly exceed 18,000 km.

Also, we almost never use trains or buses when going out, always traveling by car, so the daily use really adds up.

Want to Keep It Under 30,000 km

My husband said,

I wanted to keep the mileage under 30,000 km when it’s time to replace the Panamera, but at this rate, that’s impossible…

Yeah, definitely impossible (lol).

It would be great if I could regularly drive the Boxster (MT), but while it’s not impossible, it’s quite a challenge. The air-cooled 911 is often used by my husband for commuting lately, and the Golf is parked a bit far from home, so we inevitably end up using the Panamera a lot.

From now on, maybe I should try to use the Golf more for daily errands… but is it already too late?
