In recent years, Porsche has continued to release heritage models.

This time, Porsche has unveiled a limited edition model called the 911 Spirit 70. This special convertible revives the lifestyle of the 1970s for the modern era. Limited to just 1,500 units worldwide, this model is the third installment in Porsche’s “Heritage Design” series, blending the latest hybrid technology with design elements from the ’70s. Here’s a detailed look at its position and features.

Positioning Within the “Heritage Design” Series

The 911 Spirit 70 is the third model developed as part of Porsche’s “Heritage Design” strategy. This approach visually expresses the brand’s legacy by incorporating historic Porsche design cues into contemporary cars.

The first model, launched in 2020, was the 1950s-60s inspired Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition, followed by the 2022 release of the 1960s to early ’70s themed 911 Sport Classic (limited to 1,250 units).

Now, the 911 Spirit 70 arrives as the third in the “Icon of Cool” series, recreating the vibe of the 1970s to early 1980s in a modern context.

Distinctive ’70s-Inspired Exterior

The standout feature of the 911 Spirit 70 is its exterior, adorned with numerous 1970s motifs.

The first thing that catches the eye is the exclusive new body color, “Olive Neo”. This deep, rich green exudes the unique, slightly edgy mood characteristic of the ’70s. Complementing it is the grayish-gold “Bronzite”, applied to the lower front and rear bumpers as well as the wheels.

On the hood, three matte black vertical stripes are featured. These stripes are a modern revival of the “safety stripes” that sports drivers in the 1970s applied to their cars to improve visibility at high speeds. The sides of the car sport black side decals with the Porsche logo and round racing number-style graphics, with the number “70” emphasizing the car’s identity.

Attention to detail shines through in other areas as well. The Porsche crest at the front edge of the hood is a vintage design close to the 1963 original, while the rear features gold-plated “PORSCHE” lettering and a “911 Spirit 70” badge.

The Return of the Iconic “Pasha” Interior Pattern

Step inside, and the 1970s vibe is alive throughout the cabin.

The highlight is the revival of the iconic “Pasha” pattern, a distinctive checkerboard fabric used on the seats and interior trim. This black and olive checkered graphic creates a kind of psychedelic 3D effect.

The Pasha pattern was legendary in late ’70s to early ’80s Porsche 928 and 911 interiors. In the 911 Spirit 70, it covers not only the 18-way adjustable Sport Plus seats’ center panels but also parts of the door trims and the inside of the glovebox.

The seats, dashboard, and other interior surfaces are wrapped in premium Club leather (genuine leather in Basalt Black), accented with contrasting Olive Neo stitching throughout. The instrument cluster features a retro-inspired design, with digital displays styled to resemble classic analog gauges, complete with Porsche’s traditional green dial faces.

Cutting-Edge Hybrid Technology Delivers Performance

Under the hood, the 911 Spirit 70 shares its hybrid system with the late-model 992 GTS. Porsche calls this an “efficient performance hybrid,” combining an electric turbocharger (e-turbo) integrated with the engine, a 400V high-voltage battery, and an electric motor built into the transmission.

911 Spirit 70 Key Specifications
Base Model 992-generation 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet
Engine 3.6L flat-six twin-turbo + electric turbo + motor
System Max Output 398 kW (541 hp)
Max Torque 610 Nm
Transmission 8-speed PDK (with integrated electric motor)
Drive Layout Rear-wheel drive (RWD)
Production Volume Limited to 1,500 units worldwide
Price 33.41 million yen

The rear-wheel-drive layout mirrors that of the original 911, preserving the classic driving feel. The electric motor primarily assists with turbocharging and power delivery, aiming for smooth acceleration with minimal turbo lag, all while maintaining the pure rear-wheel-drive handling experience.

While the original 930 Turbo (the first 911 Turbo) was known for its wild, sudden turbo boost, the Spirit 70’s advanced hybrid technology greatly improves drivability and refinement. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 312 km/h.

A Collector’s Treasure

The 911 Spirit 70 also comes with exclusive collector’s items. These include a special chronograph watch featuring the black “Pasha” pattern on the dial, as well as a lifestyle collection of apparel and accessories inspired by the 1970s.

Additionally, a dedicated AR app for Apple Vision Pro has been developed. This app lets users immerse themselves in a 1970s-style virtual space, design their preferred 911 Spirit 70 specifications, and enjoy detailed explanations of iconic designs from that era.

Deliveries in Europe are scheduled to begin in April 2025, with other regions to follow. Given its limited production run, distinctive design, and status as the first 911 with a hybrid system, the 911 Spirit 70 is sure to be a highly desirable model for Porsche collectors.
