Reviews & Test Rides

Porsche 911 Carrera T

at homeIt has been almost two months since the Porsche 911 Carrera T arrived.

Meanwhile. My wife is the primary driver of the 911 Carrera T. She is primarily responsible for breaking it in.I am a driver. I myself only borrow the car occasionally and do not drive it every day. However, I have recently had a chance to take a good ride, and I would like to write a review of the Carrera T.

I have no intention of giving my wife any special favorable evaluation of the car just because she bought it herself. In fact, if you look at the reviews of the cars we have owned in the past, we have mentioned negative comments about the 992 Cabriolet being a car we don't really want to go touring in, and about the GT3 being frustrating.

So please understand that all the impressions I am about to give are honest ones.

First impressions of the Porsche 911 Carrera T

First.Talking about first impressions on the day of delivery, to be honest, they were not that good.

Specifically, although the engine noise is loud when starting,When you start driving, you don't hear much engine noise, a little quieter 911.It felt as if the Also,The engine felt a bit stiff and did not give the impression of turning smoothly. The suspension, on the other hand, was surprisingly good despite the -10mm PASM sport suspension.

However, theOverall, I can't get away from the impression that it's just a regular 992 Porsche 911.It was a feeling.

While talking to my wife, I said, "It's quieter than I thought it would be.His wife exchanged the impression that he was a "good man" and that she was a "good woman".I still enjoy the 981 Boxster GTS more.He even went so far as to say, "I'm not going to do it.

I agree with you about that, and my impression on the day of delivery was that it had little impact.

As the break-in period progresses.

However, that impression has changed,It was after about 300 to 500 kilometers. My wife, who had been negative about theCarrera T has been interesting lately!Because he began to say, "I'm not going to do it.

Around that time, I also drove the Carrera T again, and my impression was completely different.

First, the sound of the engine is clearly audible. This is clearly different from when the car was delivered; even when driving around town in second or third gear, the pleasant six-cylinder sound makes driving a pleasure. With the sport exhaust on, it gets even better, not too loud and not too quiet,It resonates a very moderate volume.

The engine runs very smoothly and the friction is clearly less than when the car was delivered.

Porsche 911 Carrera T (992)

Since it is the Sport Design Package, it will have the same aero as the GTS and the license plate position will be raised.

Compared to the same 992 Carrera Cabriolet in our house, the sound quality is somewhat different. Specifically,The Cabriolet feels noisier and sounds somewhat more intense and turbo-like.In comparison, the sound of the Carrera T is a bit more subdued and refined.

The sound is balanced very well with the rhythmic speeding up while shifting from first, second, and third gears by manual operation. Shifting is smooth, with very short strokes, and the driver can enter with a flick of the wrist.

I think this 992 manual is very good, although the 991 GT3 manual was also very good,Personally, this one is even easier to operate and feels better.

Attractiveness of the base Carrera engine

The engine has plenty of torque,There is very little turbo lag at low rpm, which is felt with engines S and above.

This makes acceleration from low speeds in town very easy, as well as mid-range acceleration on highways such as the Hanshin Expressway, which runs at relatively low speeds.

Frankly. The combination of this base Carrera engine and manual is superb. No, it's the best.
The engine turns like NA even though it is turbocharged, and its torque characteristics, when operated with manual shift, can even feel like an extension of the NA engine 981 and 991.

Of course, it loses out to the S in terms of overwhelming power and RPM extension at higher RPMs, such as above 4000 RPM, but even so, there are still quite a few people who would consider this car to be slow.
While it is a base Carrera, it is very fast. Any faster might conversely be unwieldy.

Rather.Benefits of easy handling, torquey feel, and low turbo lag in the low RPM range below 4000 RPM, which is the main use of the car in daily drivingI feel that it is much larger than the

Excellent handling

And then...The most notable aspect of this 911 Carrera T is its handling. First, the steering is very light.

To be exact,It is not light, but has very little friction. As a result, the steering feels very high quality, and the ground contact and angle of the tires are easy to grasp.

Of course, this is an individual without Power Steering Plus. Nonetheless, it feels very different from the 992 Carrera Cabriolet. In the case of the Carrera Cabriolet, the steering is heavier and feels rather very solid.and compared to the 991 model and up, it gives the impression of riding in a Carrera 4 series.

I wondered why they were so different, even though they are the same 992 base Carrera type model.

The answer,Perhaps it is in the fact that the Carrera T is powered by a lightweight lithium-ion battery.

Lightweight lithium-ion battery for Porsche 911 Carrera T (992)

Lightweight LiFePO4 battery standard on GT3, Turbo and Carrera T

I had previously replaced the battery in my 981 Boxster GTS with a lithium-ion battery.Previous BlogI have the exact same impression as I wrote in
I think that the change in center of gravity due to the physical weight change, and the improved turning ability due to the lower weight around the front of the car and the power of the lithium-ion battery have a positive effect on the electric power steering.

this (something or someone close to the speaker (including the speaker), or ideas expressed by the speaker)The effect of lithium-ion batteries is undoubtedly tremendous. With confidence I can say.

In the case of Porsche, the heavy battery is located just below the windshield, a position that greatly affects the center of gravity, so it reduces the weight of the battery, which has a significant impact on handling.

Its great steering and very quick around corners. However, it is not at the level of the GT3. It is not that sharp like a racing car, and just from the beginning of steering, the Carrera Cabriolet seems to be more responsive.

However, theThe responsiveness of the Carrera T is overwhelmingly better after the steering is turned and angled.

This individual has aRear axle steering is optional and very effective. The car continues to turn and clear the corner, seemingly forgetting that it is an RR car, and turns as if it were a midship car. Therefore, even when turning a corner at a slightly high speed, the driver does not feel insecure at all, and the car moves in with ease.

Winding is really fun. This is the best 992 I have ever driven.

To be honest, with the 992 Porsche 911 I never really wanted to go touring. It is a very nice car for city and highway driving, but for long distance touring on various Japanese winding roads, I sometimes felt it was lacking in the sense that it was a little too graceful.

The Carrera T, however, is different. The combination of the Carrera's engine and manual and the PASM Sport chassis and lightweight battery are highly effective. This is the first time I can say that this is an emotional 992 type that appeals to my emotions.

How comfortable is the ride in town?

Next, I would like to discuss my impressions of the city. I was most interested in the city. The ride quality of the PASM sport chassis, however, is perfectly acceptable.Of course, compared to a regular Carrera, the car may sway from side to side due to repairs on the road surface. This is also felt in the GT3, but it is totally calmer than in the GT3. On smooth roads, on the contrary, the ride feels more comfortable than the Carrera.

Surprisingly, even the PASM sport chassis has no problem with this level of stopping.

I had a bad impression of PASM Sport and PCCB equipped on the S model that I test-drove at the dealer, because it was not comfortable to drive. However, after test driving the Carrera T this time, my impression of PASM Sports has changed greatly. I think this is a sufficient level for daily use.

However, theFor those who value ride quality, such as those who use it as a date car, the overall ride quality in various situations would be better with a regular PASM.

This is the true "touring package".

In general, I would say,I think this Carrera T is a true "touring package".

There is no deception in the fact that the T in the grade name is the T of touring. Long distance touring, whether in town, in traffic, on the highway, or on the winding roads, there is no sense of frustration in any situation.

Always fun. Always want to drive.

Porsche 911 Carrera T (992)

I want to drive it all the time. It is a true touring machine that I have finally found.

Of course, for those who are looking for instant acceleration, engine blow-up, and a flair for cars, the S, GTS, and even the GT3 are better.
However, from the perspective of getting the most out of a Porsche on public roads and enjoying the driving experience of Porsche itself, I don't think there is any other 992-type 911 that offers such a good balance.

A 992 in perfect balance, that's exactly my impression.

I always enjoy reading your work ‍♂️
I got the impression that the 911 Carrera T is a gentleman's car for mature adults who are well versed in the world of cars.
By the way, are you of the school of thought to use autoblippink?
I drive a Carrera GTS MT and I don't use the autoblipstick because I want to feel the rear-centric deceleration when I downshift.

    • HiroHiro

      Hello, Takeko-san!

Thank you for reading our blog!

Regarding autoblipping, I personally am of the school that uses autoblipping for smooth downshifts.
In the case of the 981GTS, I have to set it to Sport Plus to make it effective, though I may blip it myself,
In the case of the 992, it sounds and feels better to leave it to the machine than to agitate it yourself.

Rear-centered deceleration when downshifting means without daring to match the rotation,
Can you apply the engine brake?
Certainly for that kind of operation, it would be better not to match the rotation, so it would be better to disable autoblipping.

Congratulations on the delivery of the car. I was also waiting for your husband's review.
By the way, in the last photo, I think the license plate number is faintly visible. I hope it is just my imagination.

Congratulations on the delivery of your car.
Gradually, things are changing, and I enjoy reading your reports.
I, too, had a Porsche as my dream car. Unfortunately, I could not afford a Porsche,
I am enjoying my mini f56 JCW with MT.
Please report on the maturation process in the future.
I am looking forward to it.
