The Urge to Change Cars and the Reality of Taycan Resale Value

The other day, while driving my Taycan, I found myself reflecting deeply:
“Choosing the right car for myself is really tough…”

Today, I want to share my thoughts on the recurring “urge to change cars,” the harsh reality of “EV resale values,” and ultimately why I’ve concluded that “my current Taycan 4S Cross Turismo is the best fit.”

The Cyclical “Car Change Fever” and Browsing Car Sensor

I regularly get waves of “I want to change my car.”

Sometimes, I get an intense craving to fiddle with a manual transmission, thinking, “A 911 with a manual would be amazing… The Carrera T manual was so much fun. I want that feeling of truly controlling the car myself.” That’s when I find myself scrolling through Car Sensor on my phone.

Or even with the Taycan, I think, “I’m driving the 4S Cross Turismo now, but I’d love to try the more powerful ‘Turbo’ model.” So I start looking for higher-spec versions.

Late at night, I browse websites, imagining, “Oh, this one’s nice. But it’s a bit pricey…” and let my fantasies run wild.

However, these daydreams usually end as just that—daydreams. One major reason is the current used market for Taycans. I bought my 2023 Taycan in January 2024.

The purchase price was about 17 million yen.

Two years later, the market has shifted dramatically. For the same model year (though exact matches are rare), even with just 10,000 kilometers, prices have dropped to the 9 million yen range (which might be typical for regular cars).

I’ve already driven about 35,000 kilometers, so trading it in now would be a big loss, plus I still have a loan to pay off. Reality hits hard. (By the way, I recently wrote about starting a “goshuin pilgrimage” — collecting temple stamps — which has definitely added to my mileage!)

Faced with this reality, I ask myself: is there really a car I want so badly that I’d give up my beloved Taycan 4S Cross Turismo (which I also love for its off-road package)? The answer is no. So the practical conclusion is that continuing to drive my current car makes the most sense.

Do I Really Need a 911 Manual Transmission for How I Drive?

Many people around me—and viewers who comment on my weekly YouTube live streams—frequently buy or trade cars (which is impressive and keeps the economy moving!). Every time I see a delivery tweet, I think, “That’s so cool, I want one too!”

But when I calmly analyze my own driving habits and preferences, I realize I don’t actually need a sports car like that. (Honestly, I probably could have figured this out sooner!)

When I bought the Carrera T manual, it was fueled by a strong desire: “I want to drive a sports car. Women driving manuals look so cool.” But in reality, I’m not someone who craves winding mountain roads or loves driving all over just for the fun of it.

Clearly, I don’t need a 911 right now (laughs).

For everyday city driving, I want a stress-free ride. On the highway, I value having instant torque and power for smooth merging and a stable, enjoyable drive at speed.

Sure, I run a car blog and want to be part of the car enthusiast community, but honestly, I’m probably closer to the “I just like cars a little” crowd.

Of course, owning a Porsche motivates me to work hard and adds meaning to my life. Cars remain an important part of who I am.

But above all, I love my work, and nothing else currently excites me more. I don’t have many hobbies, so Porsche serves as a key motivation to do great work.

If you ask, “Then why not just get a practical car?” it’s not that simple.

I want a car that lifts my spirits when I’m behind the wheel and makes me smile when I look back at it in the parking lot. It has to be a design that excites me.

Thinking this way always brings me back to the same conclusion: the Taycan is the best choice for me. How many times will I repeat this thought in my life? (Laughs)

Taycan’s Inspection Is Coming Up Soon

With all that said, my Taycan’s inspection is coming up soon.

I plan to get it inspected next February and extend the warranty (at least for one year). For now, I’ll focus on working hard, earning well, and once I feel both mentally and financially comfortable, maybe then I’ll consider the next car.

For now, it’s all about pushing forward in life! Let’s go!
