Why My Husband Chose 21-Inch Wheels for Our Porsche Panamera Turbo

Another Question from a Curious Beginner

Our Panamera Turbo has 21-inch wheels. Yesterday, when my husband got home from work, I casually asked him:

“Why did we go with 21-inch wheels on our Panamera Turbo?”

And that kicked off a 30-minute lecture from my husband, lol. I know very little about the basics of how cars are built, so I’d assumed that different wheel sizes meant different tire sizes. I was surprised to learn that the tires’ overall diameter stays the same.

“But 21-inch wheels obviously make the tires look bigger than 19-inch ones—and the car’s legs look longer, too!” I said.

“That’s just an optical illusion. If the overall tire size changed, you’d have to recalibrate things like the speedometer. Obviously, that’s not how it works. (-_-)/”

Fair point… When you think about it, he was absolutely right.

The Wheels on the Porsche Panamera Turbo

Back to the wheels: the Panamera Turbo comes standard with 20-inch wheels. Here they are.

They look great as they are. Our car, though, has 21-inch 911 Turbo Design wheels.

I’d assumed we’d gone for 21-inch wheels simply because they make the car look sportier and give it that longer-legged look. When I said so, my husband explained:

“At first, I thought 20-inch wheels would be fine. Going up to 21 inches makes the wheels heavier and the tires’ sidewalls shorter, which can make the ride less comfortable.”

Interesting. Then he went on:

“But our sales rep, H, said, ‘If you’re buying a Turbo, you might as well go for the 21-inch wheels—they look much better!’ So I looked into the 21-inch options and found out that the 911 Turbo Design wheels were forged. Once I knew that, I figured 21-inch wheels would be fine and chose them.”

…

…

…Wait a minute. “Forged”—what does that mean? (-_-)??

Forged Wheels vs. Cast Wheels

Wheels are generally made using one of two methods: forging or casting. Forging requires more sophisticated manufacturing techniques, but produces wheels that are lighter and stronger. (They also tend to cost more.) My husband figured that forged wheels would still be light and strong even at 21 inches, so they wouldn’t compromise ride comfort too much. That’s why he chose them.

For a detailed explanation of forged and cast wheels, see this article.

“When you were picking the options in the configurator, you were thinking about all of that, too?” I asked.

“Of course. I used the vast amount of information in my head to work out the best spec and make my choices.” ( ̄ー ̄)b

He answered smugly. My goodness, what a car nerd! ヘ( ´Д`)ノ lol

Later, my husband’s younger brother test-drove a Panamera with 19-inch wheels at the dealership (19-inch wheels are standard on the base Panamera), then took our Panamera Turbo for a drive. Apparently, he said, “Even though these are 21-inch wheels, the ride feels just as comfortable as the 19-inch car.”

There’s so much more to cars than meets the eye. The people who design and engineer them are truly amazing.
