Getting Up Close with Rare 911s

I recently attended Porsche Experience Day at Fuji Speedway. Plenty of people arrived in their Porsches, and I got to see all kinds of rare models. And, as you might expect, a lot of them came in 911s. Seeing so many different 911s reminded me just how good they look.

Driving on a circuit also got me thinking. I’m sure a Panamera can be fun on track in the right hands, but a 911 must be a blast to drive, darting through corners and feeling so nimble. (The Panamera is perfectly capable on everyday roads and mountain routes, of course. A race circuit is a different story.)

Why My Husband Still Hasn’t Bought a 911

There are so many different 911s to choose from. I wonder how many versions are in the lineup altogether. And with so many special editions released alongside the regular models, the total must be enormous.

But that also means you can find the one 911 that feels made just for you—and I bet it makes for an especially rewarding ownership experience.

Thinking about all this, I said to my husband, “The 911 really is gorgeous. And there are so many versions—you’re bound to find one that suits you perfectly.”

“That’s true. But that’s exactly why I still haven’t managed to buy one.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“There are so many 911s to choose from, it’s hard to decide. The standard 911 is fantastic, but they also come out with some incredible special editions. And every new model keeps getting improvements, so I never feel like there’s a perfect time to buy one. (-_-)”

I see… Is it like trying to figure out when to replace your computer? I’ve also heard that the more choices you have, the harder it is to make a decision.

If you regret a computer purchase, you can probably live with it—after giving yourself a hundred chances to reconsider. But a car is a much bigger investment, and a 911 especially isn’t cheap. Of course he wants to get it right.

Which 911 Would Suit Me?

I asked my husband, “If I were to buy a 911, which one do you think would suit me?”

“How about the 911 Turbo Cabriolet you test-drove before? It was easy to drive and a lot of fun. Your Panamera is a Turbo, so if you’re used to that kind of performance and feel, I think it’d suit you really well.”

He had a point. I think it was about two years ago that I got to test-drive a 911 Turbo Cabriolet, and it was incredibly easy and fun to drive. I even took it on some mountain roads, and it was so enjoyable that I caught myself thinking, “Wait—have I gotten better at driving?” (laughs)

I’m not the world’s best driver, so I’m probably better suited to a car that helps make driving feel effortless than one that demands a high level of skill.

There’s a lot more to buying a car than you might think.

Ever since Fuji, though, I can feel myself leaning away from the Panamera and toward the 911… (ﾟ∀ﾟ). I still love the Panamera, of course, but there’s just something about the 911…

I think I’ll do a little more research into the 911.
