Germany’s current lineup has 55 models (the previous-generation Cayenne sold in Japan is no longer on sale there). In addition to the 11 models with manuals in Japan, Germany offers nine more—bringing the total to an impressive 20 models with a manual transmission. Here’s the breakdown:

That’s quite a selection of 911s! Unlike Japan, Germany offers manuals in Cabriolet and Targa models, as well as some GTS versions. You can even get a manual in the 911 Carrera T. My husband once got pretty worked up about the Carrera T not coming to Japan with a manual, saying, “That makes no sense! The whole point of the T is lost!” (laughs)

A Rare Breed: Manual Porsches

You can technically get manual models that aren’t officially sold in Japan through parallel imports. But a mechanic at a repair shop we spoke with recently told us that many Porsche dealers these days won’t even inspect or repair parallel-import cars, so it’s better to buy through an official dealer. (The dealer we use apparently does service parallel imports, so policies vary from dealer to dealer.)

That makes owners of manual 911 Targas, Cabriolets, and Turbos in Japan especially lucky—they’re driving some truly rare Porsches. Those models are no longer officially imported into Japan, after all. I took a look at used-car listings, and they still command pretty high prices. (And wow, air-cooled Porsche prices are seriously high!)

As the world moves steadily toward autonomous driving, manual-transmission cars are likely to become even rarer.
