I’ve Never Been Much of a Social Media Person

This is starting to sound like one of those “We’re now serving chilled Chinese noodles” announcements… but I’ve started a Facebook Page. To be honest, social media has never really been my thing. I rarely update my personal Facebook, I’m not particularly interested in what everyone else is posting, I’ve never understood the appeal of Instagram, and I left Twitter alone for ages because I just didn’t get it.

Then this blog got me started on Twitter, and little by little I began to realize, “Wait… Twitter might actually be kind of fun?”

What Makes Twitter Fun

I’m anonymous on Twitter, and there are two things I especially enjoy about it.

1) You get to see what people really think

It can be hard to speak your mind on Facebook or a blog when you’re using your real name. Lots of people with personal or professional ties to you may be reading, so your posts tend to be more polished and careful. On Twitter, though, many people are anonymous, which makes it easier to say things you might normally hold back—and, as a result, the posts can get right to the heart of the matter. Even a casual tweet can make you think, “That’s so true!” Just reading people’s posts is entertaining.

Take the Panamera, for example:

The names sound alike, so a Panamera is basically a Primera, right?

A black Panamera kind of looks like a hearse.

I can’t help laughing and thinking, “Huh, fair point!” (lol)

2) You can easily connect beyond your usual circle

Twitter makes it easy to reach beyond your own community. It’s amazing how easily you can connect with people you’d never meet in everyday life. You might not know who they are or where they live, but you can like a post, retweet it, or leave a comment. I only use Twitter in Japanese, but I imagine you could connect with people all over the world in English.

Well, Twitter really is something. (A little late to the party, I know.)

Social Media Is Fun After All!

Once I discovered the fun of Twitter, I got carried away and started using Instagram, too (I guess it really is all about those beautiful photos!).

And then I thought, “Why not make a Facebook Page, too?” So I launched one the day before yesterday. I’ve already started posting, and I hope I can make good use of what each social platform does best. For now, I’m thinking:

・Twitter → Porsche-related retweets and casual thoughts
・Instagram → Porsche photos taken with my DSLR
・Facebook Page → New blog posts
