New Porsche Macan Earns Euro NCAP’s Top Five-Star Safety Rating

The new Porsche Macan has earned the top five-star rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). The result reflects strong performance across all test categories. Porsche continually develops and tests new driver-assistance systems to ensure high levels of vehicle safety—going well beyond the minimum standards required by law.

The new Macan is Porsche’s first all-electric four-door sports car. Euro NCAP revises its test criteria every two to three years, steadily raising the bar. The Macan’s results show that it is one of the safest cars among the 2024 models tested.

Around 150 developers, engineers, and testers worked on developing and integrating the Macan’s safety-assistance systems, with the process taking approximately three years.

Advanced Safety Systems That Go Beyond Legal Requirements

Björn Kern, a Porsche expert in active safety systems, says: “When developing these systems, Porsche always aims to optimize safety well beyond the minimum legal requirements.”

For example, the new Macan’s emergency braking assist processes data from a front camera, a central radar, and front corner radars. The legal minimum requires only a front camera, but combining radar and camera data broadens the system’s field of view and significantly extends the situations in which it can operate.

These advanced systems help the new Macan respond to a range of hazardous situations, including low-light conditions, pedestrians emerging from blind spots, and vehicles turning at intersections.

Emergency Braking and Exit Warnings Offer Real-World Protection

Kern explains: “The biggest challenge is building trust in these systems. Drivers may not realize they are there until a critical situation is unfolding and it feels almost too late.”

Driver-assistance systems are designed to intervene in stages. First, they warn the driver while there is still time to react. If the driver does not respond, the system can apply the brakes automatically to reduce the impact of a collision—or avoid one altogether.

Euro NCAP said the Macan’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system performed well in tests involving other cars, avoiding a collision in some scenarios. The system’s ability to protect pedestrians and cyclists was especially highly rated.

Lane-departure warning and lane-change assist also contribute to safety. Working together, the two systems are particularly helpful on highways. Another newer feature is the exit warning system. It provides a visual alert at every exit when a road user is approaching from behind. If there is a risk of colliding with, for example, a cyclist, the system delays the door from opening to help reduce the danger.

Fatigue and distraction are also common causes of crashes. The rest recommendation system suggests a break when it detects signs of driver fatigue, based on an analysis of driving behavior and lane keeping. In the future, an in-cabin camera system may be able to detect microsleep and visual distraction, further enhancing safety. Even with innovative driver-assistance technology, however, the driver remains ultimately responsible.

Euro NCAP’s Rigorous Testing and Evaluation Process

Euro NCAP evaluates vehicles over approximately six to eight weeks on test tracks, in laboratories, and on public roads. Of the six cars used for testing, four are destroyed in crash tests. Safety-assistance systems are assessed through driving tests using highly precise, robot-assisted equipment. The new Macan achieved an impressive score of 78% in this category. Euro NCAP rated its protection of vulnerable road users at 83%, and its protection of adult and child occupants at 90% each.

How the Porsche Taycan’s Safety Compares with Tesla Models

The new Macan’s high rating is notable, but other electric vehicles also deserve attention for their safety performance.

The Porsche Taycan earned five stars in its 2019 Euro NCAP test. It scored 85% for adult occupant protection and 83% for child occupant protection, while pedestrian protection and safety-assistance systems received somewhat lower scores of 70% and 73%, respectively.

Tesla models, meanwhile, have also earned consistently high ratings. The Model 3, tested in 2019, scored an impressive 96% for adult occupant protection and 94% for safety-assistance systems. The Model Y, tested in 2022, earned 97% and 98% in those categories, respectively, achieving the highest overall score of any vehicle tested by Euro NCAP. The Model S, also tested in 2022, performed strongly with 94% for adult occupant protection and 98% for safety-assistance systems.

Notably, Tesla’s camera-based system, known as Tesla Vision, achieved a high score for safety assistance. This suggests that Tesla’s camera-only approach can be effective in supporting vehicle safety.

The Model X, tested in 2019, also scored highly, with 98% for adult occupant protection and 94% for safety-assistance systems. Matthew Avery, Director of Research at Thatcham Research and a member of Euro NCAP’s board, described it as “one of the safest cars of the year.”

Model Overall rating Adult occupant protection Child occupant protection Pedestrian protection
Safety-assistance systems
New Porsche Macan 5 stars 90% 90% 83% 78%
Porsche Taycan 5 stars 85% 83% 70% 73%
Tesla Model 3 5 stars 96% 86% 74% 94%
Tesla Model Y 5 stars 97% 87% 82% 98%
Tesla Model S 5 stars 94% 91% 85% 98%
Tesla Model X 5 stars 98% 81% 72% 94%

Where the New Macan Stands on Safety

Comparing these results shows that the new Macan delivers a very high level of safety. Its scores for occupant and pedestrian protection are comparable to those of Tesla models. While its safety-assistance score does not match the best-in-class 98% achieved by the Tesla Model Y and Model S, the Macan’s 78% is still an impressive result.

The new Porsche Macan combines sports-car performance with the latest safety technology. Its five-star Euro NCAP rating, earned under stringent testing standards, reflects Porsche’s commitment to vehicle safety.

As electric vehicles become safer overall, the new Macan stands out as a compelling combination of Porsche driving enjoyment and high levels of protection. For Porsche owners and prospective buyers, it’s a car that inspires confidence on the safety front, too.

Porsche will no doubt continue developing advanced safety systems that exceed legal requirements, working to make its cars safer and more comfortable. The new Macan’s success marks another important step forward—and showcases the company’s engineering expertise and commitment to safety.
