Porsche Cayenne EV Prototype Seen Testing on Snow

A prototype of Porsche’s electric SUV, the Cayenne EV, has been spotted during test runs in spy shots.

This Cayenne EV is said to use the same PPE platform as the Macan EV and Audi Q6 e-tron. Initially, it was scheduled to debut in late 2025 or early 2026, but Porsche’s recent review of its electric vehicle (EV) strategy has cast some doubt on the launch timing, suggesting possible delays.

Impact of Porsche’s EV Strategy Review

To adapt to changes in the automotive market, Porsche has had to adjust its overall electrification plans for the brand.

Specifically, the company plans to extend the lifespan of some internal combustion engine (ICE) models and modify currently developing EVs to also accommodate ICE powertrains. The three-row SUV “K1” is reportedly affected by this strategic shift.

Regarding the Cayenne EV, since development is already well underway, adapting it for ICE powertrains is considered difficult. However, because Porsche plans to continue selling the current ICE Cayenne model (which received a facelift and major updates in 2024) alongside the EV version for several years, this is not expected to pose a significant issue.

Features and Expected Specs of the Cayenne EV

The Cayenne EV will reportedly adopt an extended version of the PPE architecture used in the Macan EV. While the prototype’s camouflage obscures detailed exterior design, it is expected to borrow many styling cues for the headlights and grille from the Macan EV.

As for the powertrain, the entry-level Cayenne EV is likely to share the same setup as the mid- to high-grade Macan EV models. Specifically, it is expected to feature a dual-motor system producing 509 hp (516 PS / 380 kW) in the 4S variant and 630 hp (639 PS / 470 kW) in the Turbo variant.

For the higher-end Cayenne Turbo EV, power units similar to the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S are anticipated, delivering 872 hp (884 PS / 650 kW) and 939 hp (700 kW / 952 PS) respectively. There is even speculation that it might be equipped with the 1,020 hp (1,034 PS / 760 kW) motor found in the Taycan Turbo GT, potentially competing directly with the Tesla Model X Plaid, which boasts similar output.

Porsche EV Sales Challenges and Future Outlook

On the other hand, a concern for Porsche is the sharp decline in Taycan sales last year.

Despite a global increase in EV registrations and the introduction of facelifted and high-performance models, Porsche was unable to halt this downward trend. Additionally, Macan EV sales have not met expectations.

Given this situation, there is keen interest in whether Porsche will proceed with the Cayenne EV launch as planned within the next 12 months or delay it until the luxury EV market recovers. The direction of Porsche’s EV strategy could significantly impact the Cayenne EV’s release timing, making future developments highly anticipated.

Among Porsche enthusiasts, excitement for the Cayenne EV is matched by strong interest in how the brand will balance coexistence with traditional ICE models. As electrification advances, all eyes are on Porsche’s approach to maintaining this balance in the years ahead.
