Porsche GT3 Maintenance Costs

The other day, someone asked me, “People say a GT3 costs more to maintain than a 911 Carrera, but what exactly costs more—and by how much?”

I asked my husband what it had been like in practice. He said:

“Hmm… So far, I haven’t found it dramatically more expensive than a 911 Carrera. But if you drive it on track often, you’ll need to change the oil more frequently, which would push the costs up. My GT3 also has PCCB, and replacing those brakes can run into the millions of yen… That might be why people think it costs more to maintain than a 911 Carrera.”

Our 911 GT3 Touring (991.2) was delivered in May 2019, and we’ve now owned it for a year and a half. It has covered around 10,700 km (6,650 miles). During that time, we’ve had the oil changed twice and completed one scheduled 12-month inspection at the dealer.

The first oil change was after the break-in period. The second was just recently, before a track day at Suzuka Circuit following a long-distance tour. Each oil change cost around ¥30,000. The 12-month scheduled inspection came to just under ¥90,000.

Looking at those figures, I can see why my husband says the GT3 hasn’t felt especially expensive to maintain so far.

I also asked my husband about the GT3’s fuel economy. He said:

“Well, you burn through fuel pretty quickly on track. The other day at Suzuka, I did two 30-minute sessions, and the tank was already almost empty. On a tour, though, I usually get around 8–9 km/L overall, driving on highways and mountain roads. The 992 Cabriolet gets about 10–11 km/L, so the GT3 isn’t all that bad by comparison.”

We’ve only had our GT3 for a year and a half, so it hasn’t needed its first inspection after three years of ownership, and we haven’t had any major issues requiring parts to be replaced. As a result, we haven’t found its ownership costs dramatically higher than those of our other Porsche. Will that change after three or five years? I’ll keep sharing updates as we learn more.
