The manual transmission version of the Porsche 911 GT3 (992.2 generation) has set the world’s fastest lap time for a production manual car on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The astonishing recorded time of 6 minutes 56.294 seconds not only shatters the previous record holder but also surpasses the prior generation’s PDK-equipped model, delivering a stunning result.
The Fastest Manual Car Ever – An Incredible Sub-7-Minute Lap
The 2025 Porsche 911 GT3 (992.2) with a 6-speed manual transmission clocked an overwhelming lap time of 6 minutes 56.294 seconds on the Nürburgring Nordschleife (20.832 km). This time is officially certified by an independent auditor as the fastest ever for a production manual transmission car. It beats the previous record holder, the Dodge Viper ACR (2017, 8.4L V10, 645 hp, 7 minutes 1.3 seconds on the 20.6 km course) by over 9.5 seconds.
What’s even more remarkable is that this time also bests the previous generation (992.1) 911 GT3’s PDK (dual-clutch) model by approximately 3.6 seconds. This proves “the manual is even faster than the previous generation’s PDK”, marking a significant milestone as the manual GT3 joins the exclusive “sub-7-minute club” for production cars at the Nürburgring.

Technology and Conditions Behind the Record
The car used for this record attempt was a 911 GT3 equipped with a 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six engine producing 510 horsepower (375 kW) paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Notably, this GT3 was fitted with the newly available lightweight , which includes a roll cage and achieves approximately 12 kg of weight reduction.

The car ran on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R (N1) tires, among the highest-grip street-legal options available. The attack day enjoyed ideal conditions with a track temperature of 27°C and air temperature of 12°C under clear skies. Converted to the old Nordschleife measurement method (20.6 km), the lap time equates to 6 minutes 51.764 seconds, effectively beating the more powerful Viper ACR by over 10 seconds.
Insights from Developers and Driver
Andreas Preuninger, head of Porsche’s GT model line, explained the motivation behind choosing the manual for the official time attack: “Among 911 GT3 customers, the preference for the 6-speed manual is growing, and we’ve been frequently asked, ‘How fast can a manual GT3 lap the Nürburgring?’” He acknowledged that “the PDK is clearly faster,” but emphasized that the official lap with the 6-speed manual was a deliberate message to manual enthusiasts.

Jörg Bergmeister, who piloted the time attack, commented, “The new 911 GT3 offers even greater confidence at the limit and was faster than the previous generation through nearly every corner.” He added, “We learned a lot from the 911 GT3 RS, especially in chassis tuning, which makes the car more stable over bumps and curbs. The 8% shorter gear ratios clearly increase drive force to the rear wheels.” Bergmeister also noted, “With the 7-speed PDK, I might have shaved off a few more seconds, but the manual attack was more engaging because I had so much to do, which made it even more fun.” His focus on driving enjoyment over lap times was particularly striking.
Reactions from Overseas Media
UK’s Top Gear praised Porsche for proving that “the manual gearbox still matters,” reporting that “Porsche has shown just how fast a manual GT3 can be.” Autocar also broke the news, calling the 911 GT3 the fastest “manual car” ever. They highlighted that in the UK market, about one in four buyers of the standard GT3 opts for the manual, and over half of GT3 Touring buyers choose the manual version without the rear wing.
US outlets like Car and Driver and Motor1 echoed the sentiment, stating that Porsche has claimed the title of the world’s fastest “manual car”. They called the manual GT3’s lap time surpassing the PDK version “astonishing considering the dual-clutch advantage,” and suggested that “it will be a long time before another manual car breaks this record,” celebrating Porsche’s remarkable achievement.

A New Horizon for Manual Cars
This record isn’t just about being the “fastest” — it’s a testament to the balanced performance of the 911 GT3. Even without highly electronic PDK control or massive engine power, the finely tuned chassis and driver skill can deliver such an incredible lap time. This is a delightful surprise for many enthusiasts.
The perfect blend of “speed” and “fun” is the essence of the 911 GT3, and this lap record symbolizes that philosophy coming to life. For Porsche fans, this achievement is not only a numerical milestone but also a source of pride that their beloved manual GT3 delivers world-class performance.

My Personal Experience with the GT3 Manual
I have personally driven the 991 generation 911 GT3 Touring Package.
One of the most impressive aspects from my track experience was that you can shift up while keeping the throttle fully open in the GT3’s manual transmission. Unlike typical manuals where you need to lift off the throttle to shift, the GT3 allows you to keep the accelerator pressed while disengaging the clutch, with the computer perfectly matching engine revs.
This enables lightning-fast shifts similar to a PDK and flawless auto-blip on downshifts. The GT3 manual transmission is designed as a “manual built for going fast,” and this record clearly reflects that philosophy. From my own experience, the GT3 manual is not just nostalgia—it’s a high-performance system seamlessly integrated with cutting-edge technology.
