The hot weather continues, but I am still riding my 964 as often as ever. It's Tiptronic, so it's easy to commute around town and to work, and isn't it the best air-cooled Porsche you can use on a daily basis?I think.

One day, I casually lifted the rear spoiler to take a look.A plastic part with bellows structure has deteriorated and has a hole in it.Although it does not directly affect driving in particular, it looks bad from behind and is not good from a performance standpoint, so we decided to replace it.

Aerodynamics is important because the car runs on the autobahn.

The 911 car has a drooping rear end, which is not very good in terms of downforce to begin with. It is shaped like the cross section of an airplane wing when viewed from the side.At high speeds, the opposite is true: lift is generated.

Among cars with a similar shape is Audi's first-generation TT. It is said that a small rear spoiler was added to the model after minor changes because the car initially had a large amount of lift and lacked downforce, resulting in many rollover accidents on the Autobahn.

Aerodynamics may not be an issue in Japan, but in an environment like the Autobahn, aerodynamics is very important.

964 electric rear spoiler

The 964 and later 911s are equipped with an electric rear spoiler that automatically raises the rear spoiler at a certain speed (around 80 km/h in the case of the 964).

This raised rear spoiler has a telescoping wall of bellows construction, and when viewed from directly behind, the lower portion of the rear spoiler is a black wall. This isIt has the effect of cooling the engine compartment by sending the air flowing from the front to the engine compartment firmly. It seems that the air inhalation volume is doubled.

However, if there is a hole in this wall, the wind will flow directly behind it.

Rear Spoiler Wall before and after replacement

The replacement work was done by the usual Beforce. It is not a big change in the way I feel when I drive, but the new parts feel good.

Since the rear spoiler is usually retracted, it is difficult to notice any defects. 964 owners should take out the rear spoiler manually once in a while to inspect it.
