A Rare Chance

Yesterday, I wrapped up work early and took my older and younger daughters to the dermatologist in the late afternoon. After their appointments, just as we were about to head home, I suddenly remembered:

Oh, right—my husband doesn’t need dinner tonight. I’ll pick up something ready-made, fill up the tank, and head home…

As I drove, both girls promptly fell fast asleep.

Th-this is my chance…!!

It’s not every day that both of them fall asleep without a fuss. Still, as a mom, I couldn’t help feeling a little guilty about keeping two small children out past 6 p.m. without having fed them dinner.

But then again… if we head straight home now, I’ll only wake them up after they’ve just fallen asleep. It’d be better for the girls if I drove around for an hour or so.

That was all the justification I needed. Instead of heading home, I decided to take the long way around. But even with the detour, I hit no traffic lights and didn’t encounter a single traffic jam. Before I knew it, I was back near home.

Wait, that’s it? I’m not nearly ready to stop. (-_-)

A Spontaneous Porsche Drive on Royu Driveway

The girls were still sound asleep, and my husband didn’t need dinner tonight. So I pointed the car away from home and headed for Royu Driveway.

It was a weekday evening, sometime after 5 p.m., and there was hardly another car on Royu Driveway. The road climbs through a series of fairly tight bends on the way to the toll booth, but beyond that, it opens up into plenty of smooth, flowing curves. That was my cue to let the Panamera stretch its legs and accelerate.

That’s Porsche for you: it took the curves with pinpoint precision, carving through them and charging up the mountain road.

There was no need to worry about “taking the corners gently because the girls are asleep.” On the long, gradual climb around Okuike, I switched to Sport mode and pressed the accelerator firmly. (Though keep an eye out—there are sometimes police around.)

Ah, this feels so good. What an incredible car.

Before I knew it, the Panamera had reached the lookout. A Ferrari was parked there, and I got the sense we were both eyeing each other’s cars—(or maybe that was just me)—before the Ferrari soon roared off, revving its engine.

We had the summit to ourselves, and the sunset was beautiful.

Still, waking the girls seemed like more trouble than it was worth, and I couldn’t leave them alone in the car, so we stayed for just a minute before heading back. All in all, though, it was a thoroughly enjoyable drive.

Lately, I’ve been appreciating all over again how nice it is to have a scenic drive so close to home.
