Thoughts on Soccer Player Kazuyoshi Miura’s Purchase of an Air-Cooled Porsche 911 (964)

Our Car Life

Soccer Player Kazuyoshi Miura…

The other day, I received an email from my husband while he was at work. “There’s news that soccer player Kazuyoshi Miura bought a 964! It’s the same one we have! What perfect timing!” Since our air-cooled Porsche 964 was delivered just last week, it really was timely news.

That made me wonder, “Why did Kazuyoshi Miura choose a 964 instead of the latest 911?” So I looked into it, and found that his wife, Risako Miura, wrote about the story behind the purchase on her Ameblo blog.

Apparently, Kazuyoshi Miura had been searching for a car for several months but couldn’t find anything that really clicked. They had a conversation saying, “The car we used to have (Porsche 964) was so cool, we should have kept it.” Then, by chance, they stopped by a Porsche used car center and found a Porsche that looked very much like the one they used to own.
The color, model, options, even the scratches inside, and the old Sanwa Motors sticker — everything was identical. “It fits so perfectly that it has to be the same Porsche 964 we used to have! It’s fate!” Kazuyoshi Miura immediately decided to buy it. Risako suggested, “Why don’t you check it out more thoroughly?” but he said, “I want to believe it’s the same car, so this is fine,” and that’s how the 964 came to our home.

What an incredible story — truly a miracle. It really shows that “Kazu” is someone who’s got that special something. That’s why he’s the King Kazu. And Risako, who watches over her husband’s car purchases and enjoys the process with him, is wonderful too. They really are a fantastic couple.

Connections with Cars…

People have connections, and I truly believe cars do too. When my husband was looking for a used SL500 (R129) before, he visited several used car dealers but often came back saying, “The car I saw today was in great condition and really nice, but it just didn’t feel right…”

When he finally found and bought the SL500, and then recently parted with it, he seemed a bit sad. On social media, he wrote, “Goodbye, SL. It was a short 9-month relationship, but truly a legendary car. (Omitted) It’s with a heavy heart that I say goodbye, but I hope to meet it again someday.”

On the other hand, for the 964 this time, he went all the way to Nagoya to see it and said, “It really clicked!” and immediately decided to buy it. He said, “The moment I saw it at the shop, I thought, ‘I want to travel with this one!’”

Cars surely carry the feelings of their owners. Especially when they’ve been cherished for many years, it feels like they even have a soul. So, I hope the next owner of the SL my husband reluctantly parted with will be a good person… and I also feel anew that we want to treasure the 964 that came to our home this time.
