What is the 86GR? How It Differs from the Standard 86
Released in 2017 as a “mass-produced sports model that lets you enjoy the thrill of driving every day,” the Toyota 86GR is a complete car tuning model that sets itself apart from the regular 86.
The current model is called the “GR86,” but note that the previous generation introduced here is read in reverse as “86GR”.
The 86GR features a wide range of upgrades including Recaro bucket seats upholstered in Alcantara, Sachs-tuned suspension, and a dedicated Torsen LSD. The engine is the same as the standard 86, a 207-horsepower, 212Nm flat-four. Its exterior boasts unique styling with a special front spoiler, side fins, a compact rear spoiler, and a single-exit exhaust. The test car was equipped with an HKS muffler and a lightweight flywheel.
Stunning Suspension Performance
The biggest appeal of the 86GR is undoubtedly its suspension.
The quality delivered by the Sachs-tuned suspension is in a completely different league compared to the standard current 86 I previously drove. Despite its firm setup, the damping is exceptionally effective, achieving a perfect balance that avoids discomfort. The suspension moves freely while accurately conveying road surface feedback and cutting out unnecessary vibrations—truly the ideal characteristic of a sports car.
Handling is extremely neutral, faithfully responding to driver inputs without falling into understeer or oversteer on mountain roads. The firmness of the suspension provides confidence when cornering, allowing you to safely explore the car’s limits and enjoy the thrill. Compared to the Fairlady Z NISMO, it’s so well executed that you can’t help but think, “If only this suspension were on the NISMO, it would be perfect.”
Perfect Power Balance and Control
With around 200 horsepower, the engine output isn’t high, but that’s exactly what enhances this car’s charm.
There are moments when you feel a lack of power on uphill stretches, but it’s precisely this modest power that makes it fun to really press the accelerator. The philosophy of enjoying driving itself over sheer power is reminiscent of Mazda’s MX-5 Miata.
The 6-speed manual transmission feels superb, with short throws and a distinct, satisfying engagement. Thanks to the lightweight flywheel, clutch engagement is light, but once accustomed, it’s very easy to handle. Notably, the engine’s response to blipping is well-mannered—not overly sensitive—making it easy to match revs with moderate throttle input. The brakes are impressively equipped with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers at the rear, delivering excellent stopping power and rigidity. Their linear feel and stability under braking provide more than enough performance for spirited driving.
The Value of Factory Tuning
Priced around 5 million yen at the time—about 1.6 million yen more than the standard 86—the 86GR wasn’t very popular.
However, there’s a clear reason for that price difference. Even if you spent that much tuning a standard 86 yourself, it would be difficult to achieve such a well-balanced harmony. The seats, body rigidity, aerodynamics, brakes, and suspension are all designed to work in perfect harmony, which is why this level of refinement is possible.
The true value of a factory-tuned model lies in the harmony of its components. Even if aftermarket parts individually perform well, combining them can upset the overall balance. The 86GR achieves the optimal balance by considering every element as a whole.
Even drivers accustomed to European cars will likely be satisfied, and at the very least, it won’t leave you “disappointed” because it offers a driving quality akin to European sports cars. This isn’t just about speed or power, but the unity between car and driver, the natural response to inputs, and the driving pleasure born from the harmony of all components.
A True Sports Car at Its Core
The 86GR isn’t just a tuned-up model; it’s a car that pursues the very essence of a sports car.
Its suspension quality is especially noteworthy, with a high-level balance of firmness and ride comfort, and precise road feedback. Combined with the manual transmission’s feel, braking performance, and engine harmony, it’s designed to maximize driving enjoyment.
Its modest power output is actually a strength, encouraging you to fully open the throttle and rev the engine—capturing the pure joy of driving itself. If you find an 86GR on the used market, it’s an extremely attractive choice for anyone who loves spirited driving. The completeness and harmony unique to a factory-tuned car offer a value that no collection of aftermarket parts can match. That’s the impression this car left on me.
