Everyday Conversations Between a Car-Mad Husband and His Wife Are a Little Unhinged

My Husband and I See Things Very Differently

To get right to it, I’m the kind of person who thinks, “As long as I get the gist, that’s good enough.” I’m happy once I understand about 60 percent, and I get bored easily, so I tend to know a little about a lot. I also almost never read the manual when I buy an appliance. Going through a thick instruction book sounds like a chore (and, to be honest, I’m not much of a reader), and I figure I’ll work it out as I go. So far, that approach hasn’t caused me any problems.

My husband is the complete opposite. He’s the type who’ll research something until he understands it inside and out. He reads manuals and instructions from cover to cover, and if there’s something he doesn’t know, he’ll dig into it until he finds the answer. If he’s not interested, he couldn’t care less—but if he is, he goes all in.

I Love Porsche, But…

The same goes for cars. I’d say I like Porsche more than the average person, but compared with a true Porsche enthusiast, my knowledge is pretty limited. I’m not especially knowledgeable about how cars are built, either.

Only recently have I started to get a feel for what people mean when they say an engine has plenty of torque. And I’ve learned that inline, flat, and V8 engines are named for the way their cylinders are arranged—that’s about the level I’m at.

But I’m the sort of person who wants to put new knowledge to use right away, so I’ll sometimes write things on the blog that sound like I know what I’m talking about. My husband often calls me out:

“You’re using PDK wrong.”
“What you wrote on the blog today is completely off.”

Air Suspension vs. Coil Springs

The other day, I suddenly remembered something from when we bought our 970 Panamera Edition. Our dealer, H, had said, “The test-drive car had air suspension, but the car being delivered to you will have coil springs, so the ride may feel slightly different.” I knew the basic difference—one uses air, the other springs—but what did that actually mean for the way the car drove?

So I casually asked my husband:

“Hey, what’s the difference between air suspension and coil springs?”

Apparently, that question flipped his enthusiasm switch…

He started with “What is suspension, anyway?” and I kept asking questions that completely missed the point. Before long, he was getting more and more fired up, and about 30 minutes had gone by. By then, I was losing interest in the whole thing and tried to call it quits: “You know what, never mind. I’ll just say I get it. Thanks (¯―¯).” But he stopped me:

“No, you can’t just leave it at that.”

Then he suddenly got up and disappeared into another room to fetch something. When he came back a little while later, he was holding an RC car. (A Porsche, naturally. Haha.)

Then he started taking it apart…

“So, coil-spring suspension works like this…”

(His demonstration)

Wait—you’re actually doing a live demo?!

At that point, I figured I’d better settle in and listen. An hour later, his lecture on the difference between air suspension and coil-spring suspension finally came to an end. And I think I sort of understood it. Haha.

Are conversations between a car-mad husband and his wife always like this? Or is it just our household? Either way, thanks to my husband, I may have learned a little about the value of digging deeper into things. That’s what I’ve been thinking lately.
