More Than Just Gloves: What I Learned After Replacing My Driving Gloves

I can’t recall exactly when it started, but it’s probably been about five years now. I’ve made it a habit to always wear driving gloves while behind the wheel.

My CACAZAN Driving Gloves

It all began with a recommendation from my husband. Back then, I was driving a Suzuki Swift Sport manual transmission, and he said, “If you’re going to drive, you should definitely wear driving gloves.” He gifted me a pair from CACAZAN.

At first, I thought, “Eh, that sounds like a hassle—I don’t really need them,” and didn’t wear the gloves. But once I tried them on, I was amazed at how perfectly they fit my hands. The way they molded to the steering wheel was incredible, and I remember thinking, “Wow, these are really something special!

They also help protect my hands from sunburn, and I’ve been hooked on wearing them ever since.

My Second Pair, Still Going Strong but Showing Signs of Wear

The pair I’m using now is my second set of CACAZAN gloves, another birthday gift from my husband. But after about three years of heavy use, they’re getting pretty dirty and worn out.

I once tried washing them myself, as I documented here, but the dirt didn’t come out much.

The other day, when we went for a drive in the Taycan as a family, my husband looked at my gloves sitting inside the car and said,

Honestly, those are super dirty and probably smell awful. Isn’t it time to replace them?

I replied, “Really? They don’t smell that bad to me.” and he laughed, “No, no—that’s not even the point! LOL.

So, I finally decided it was time for a new pair.

I’m not usually very materialistic. I tend to use shoes, bags, and wallets until they’re completely worn out, and sometimes I even buy the exact same model again just to avoid change.

That’s why I was holding on to these gloves as long as I could, but looking objectively, I probably crossed beyond the “barely usable” line—actually, I’d say I was well past it by then (laughs).

Trying Out a 5,000 Yen Driving Glove from Amazon

Since CACAZAN gloves are on the pricier side compared to typical gloves, I figured, “Maybe I don’t need anything too fancy this time.” So I searched on Amazon and picked out a cheaper pair to try.

My criteria were that the fingertips had to be exposed, and I thought I’d shake things up by choosing a different color—a pair of “red driving gloves” arrived at my home.

The price was about 5,000 yen (roughly $35-$40).

At first glance, I thought, “Oh, these actually look pretty good!” I bought a men’s medium, which felt a bit large on my thicker hands (an S size would probably have been too small), but the overall fit wasn’t bad.

Excited, I put them on and grabbed the steering wheel. And right away…

“Nope, this is totally different!!!!!!!”

What was different? First, the “grip“—the Amazon gloves didn’t grip the wheel at all and slipped smoothly. The whole point of wearing gloves is to prevent slipping, so I thought, “This might actually be unsafe… To be honest, I might have better grip without them.

I wondered if Alcantara gloves would offer better grip, but maybe that’s not the issue here. Or perhaps CACAZAN just has an insanely strong grip.

The second difference was the “fit” when I curled my fingers slightly. The fabric felt tight, stiff, and uncomfortable—just not right.

Hmm, CACAZAN definitely has a better fit and feels completely different…

I put my worn-out second pair back on and immediately knew, “Yeah, this is the one.

Of course, part of it is that the old pair has molded to my hands over time. But even so, the supple leather, the fit, and the comfort were on a whole other level.

I hadn’t realized this until I tried a different pair—it really showed me the difference clearly.

Returning to CACAZAN Gloves

Right after, I ordered a new pair from CACAZAN (this time, a different model from what I’d used before). Since CACAZAN gloves are made to order and it’s their busy season, it seems they’ll take about a month to arrive.

But I’m looking forward to getting them.

Surely, there are many other great driving gloves out there, but this experience taught me firsthand that gloves are more than just gloves—they make a real difference.

I never expected there could be such a big gap. Driving gloves really have more depth than I thought.
